  • A literal cold-blooded creature so impressive in size, people prefer to call it a flying fox. And when it takes flight, it defines what we've come to know as a megabat. It's huge, so what makes the giant golden-crowned flying fox such a picky eater? Why would entire ecosystems collapse if they disappeared? Get ready for an unforgettable introduction to the largest bat on the planet, the giant golden-crowned flying fox.

The ' flying fox ' is a fruit bat ,the largest of the species and is strictly a vegetarian living on fruits mostly , and it is a mammal and thus are warm blooded .
In the 60s and 70s they appeared in the thousands during the fruiting season in the state of Kelantan , Malaysia , where I used to live . Now they are rarely spotted because much of the wild fruit trees have been cleared for urban development .
As usual there are some people who eat them .
It is a pity that man is responsible for the near extinction and extinction of other living species .

It's came down, was going to land, then to back off to the sky just 20ft off the ground. This happened 30ft away and the bat was darker than the shade of black die to minor light pollution.
When it chose to propell itself upward, it trusted exactly how we would imagine an dragon from the movies.
I messaged severa zoologist. I will most likely never get a reply. They say to never go full crazy, but I did anyways. LoL

I've not seen a Flying Fox out here yet but I hope to. The little rascals, though, are pure entertainment to watch. 'Mananaggal' hasn't showed up yet but my wife is a bit superstitious and will not walk through the rice fields at night with me. I guess ASWANG has her worried too. LOL

    corrections:
    1) they're warm blooded
    2) they don't just exclusively eat figs
    3) they are active during the day instead of the regular bat night shifts
    4) being mammals, they can readily transmit more than just one disease to people and our animals. colonies of these guys roosting near people usually result in shortened lifespans of people who already suffer respiratory diseases and give people just that if they didn't already have it as the guano not only good for seed dispersal, it's also very good at hosting dangerous airborne pathogens
    5) it's not just deforestation that's to blame for the rapidly dwindling population of these guys. loss of habitat, wars, poaching, and overhunting contribute massively to this and there are no shortage of any of those in the regions where they live.
also, they look like little foxes with wings and are super adorable but i would advise against petting one, especially because of #4.

They’re vetted after rescue for any injuries they may have. One of the batty aviaries is for senior citizen flying fox who cannot go out and feed anymore. Their legs can’t support them hanging anymore so they’ve made slings for them to lay down but still have their feet attached above. We get a lot of these flying foxes in Australia. I took a local one with a broken wing to a wildlife vet when I was a young teen. They are very calm and not aggressive. I think the wingspan is exaggerated . A wedge tailed eagle has a wing span this big not a fruit bat.

As far as I know, many bats, if not all them, are considered to be heterothermic, as body temperature varies a great lot when flying and when sleeping. That's why some people makes confusion and call them cold blooded. In fact, they are mammals, and able to regulate body temperature, but they are not endothermic (or warm blooded) as the majority of the other groups. As they are not also cold blooded (ectothermic) they are considered by many phisiologysts as a mixture of the two, or heterothermic.
