I have been a professional instructor for 15 years. This guy explains things so well. I would rank him as the best world class player that has become an instructor that i have seen. When it comes to upper level tips. This is THE MAN no doubt.
one of the better instructionals ive seen. the funnel concept is a revelation. ive heard of "crossing the position line" often in commentaries , but never has it been explained. bert kinnister, the best pool instructor in the game, taught neils the game, and it shows here. too many "instructionals" on youtube, like sharivari and the like, waste your time with impractical or basic knowledge, and as a result you learn nothing
Great explanation, clear video, awesome tips. I would only recommend to show the position you are hitting on the cue ball. Especially for the last shot you made.
Neils your lessons helped me to win the bca qualifier the first year I tried now I’m going to Vegas to play in the bcapl world championships with tremendous confidence you elevated my game to the next level as you say so often. It works if you work thank you
I'm not sure why but the Europeans are remarkable in making these videos that are clear and digestible, usually always with something you didn't know, realize or think about. Niels, Jasmin and Ralph are my three favorites.
Niels and Ko bros have the best YT pool channels by far imo. Love how analytical he is about everything. Also like how he gives different options besides what he uses like w the stance and stroke videos. It’s easy to see now why he’s been so successful for so long
Niels, absolutely fantastic video, many people have knowledge but they don’t know how to present it or there simply not good teachers. I’m 60 years old and have seen every instructional video there is from Bob Byrnes to Tom Rosman, In my opinion your a natural instructor/teacher and your videos are absolutely brilliant. JT’s cuerepair Boston Mass.
Watched you play a match in dayton ohio at airway billiards over 20 years ago. One of the most impactful experiences of my pool career. You won the first set, and the horse for the other player then wanted you to give up weight. The look of disgust on your face was an expression ill never forget. Been a fan ever since. Thanks for the videos.
This is the type of valuable instruction I was referencing when we corresponded on FB a few months ago, Niels. The mental game stuff is excellent but a majority of players can really benefit from the strategy and fundamentals aspects of the game of which you have very few if any peers. Really appreciate you sharing this video and I'm extremely excited to see more coming soon! Huge thanks!
YES, I TOTALLY AGREE. THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF INSTRUCTION THE NOVICE AND INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS NEED TO GET THEM TO THE NEXT LEVEL. AND, IT CERTAINLY CAN'T HURT FOR THE ADVANCED PLAYERS TO REVIEW THIS MATERIAL FROM TIME TO TIME, TOO. GREAT JOB, NIELS!
Great instruction as always, Niels. I've always heard of the "funnel" as playing into a "wedge" for position. For beginners to the concept, it might be a good idea to explain that the funnel is called that because it widens the farther you get from the object ball. I think it helps people to visualize the proper zone they should be looking for as well as emphasizing the increased margin for error in speed as well as direction. Love watching you play, some of the most solid fundamentals out there. A great pro for a beginner to model their foundation after. Keep up the good work!
Just starting my pool journey and watching this 2 years after publishing. 😢 But Niels is such a great teacher (natural, I'd say) and these 3 tips have really helped me in my local league standings. I can't thank you enough, Niels and I'll be binge watching your channel for a long, long, time!
What a great resource. I've been playing at a pretty high amateur level for several years. I can count on 1hand how many times better players have tried helping me. I learned more in this video than I have in quite a few years. I love the lesson about funnels. Absolutely great advice. Now I'll binge out and watch every video over the next few days. Thank you for being selfless and sharing this information with people. Well done
As an instructor in a past life, the phrase "Those who can, do. and those who can't, teach." has always bothered me. Those teachers that are from the "can't" spectrum are poor instructors as well. When you are lucky enough to have a "Can" instructor, you will understand the knowledge given and understanding is 1000 times better then memorizing. We are fortunate enough to have a top end pro that can teach as well, a dynamic duo. Well done Niels. I just discovered your videos and being someone that formally taught technical instruction in the past, I instantly recognized both knowledge and instructional technique in you. I love the science of pool and love to teach others and your videos just got added to my must watch series of pool lessons. PS I am no one of consequence in the pool world but I love teaching and learning pool. Most recently bridging at the pivot point with BHE and FHE (Back and Front Hand English), has been a game changer for cue ball control.
Niels, as usual, great video! There's a saying, "Those who can, do. and those who can't, teach." You do both well. You do and teach. By the way, that's a great idea. Your big cheques make great wall decoration, lol.

@@Soniccues I agree with your opinion on the phrase. It’s definitely better to have a teacher who can demonstrate instead of just teaching theory alone, but to me, I think the meaning comes from the perspective of someone who can no longer do, as is the case with coaches, for example. While young, they can perform at peak levels. Once retired, they dedicate themselves to teaching from all the experience acquired. At least Neils can still do both.
I am so glad you made a summary video on the fundamentals of position play. I am certain that these tips will help boost my pool game to the next level!
Priceless advice. You actually know the stuff, but the visualization of this tutorials makes you think of it (and DO it...!) when you play your own game. Thanks again, Niels!
Neils- thank you for a perfect instructional video! Voice, tempo, clarity and content are all spot on! At the risk of being greedy (sorry), can you add your cue ball contact point?? Anyway, already excellent and very much appreciated! Thank you!!
Great instruction Niels, for your top point -playing into funnels you might want to add a graphic onto the video to show what you mean...your final acceptable position area is triangle shaped and you're encouraging entering from the furthest end. Maybe draw that triangle onscreen so people can visualize what you're describing.
Great video Neils, I think for beginners its worth mentioning that you need to be on the correct side of the ball. meaning that the pocket line of the object ball into the pocket. so when playing position come off a rail and make sure you come into position but also make sure that you are on the left or right of the pocket line (object ball going through the pocket). So having ball in hand is really important to create the angle that will ultimately get you in that position zone with maximum margin of error (speed) rather than (direction). Planning perfect position is an art especially when the layouts are extremely difficult.
Thank you for another excellent video, Niels! 8.15 a very clear example of using funnel. I often forget about them. Been working on planning three balls ahead for some time, but I still can't say it is a part of my game.
awesome. very impressed. im a good B player and also a low level bca instructor, and this was very good stuff that i don’t always use, wasnt sure of , or didn’t know … thanks. 💪
I watched your video and then clicked on another one. I then went back to this video to leave this comment, like, and subscribe. Good video man. I had heard of these tips before, but you explained them really well. I never think about the funnels or 3 balls ahead. I will remember this video and hopefully remember to do that, so thanks!
Hey Niels, I think a diagram of where you're hitting the cue ball on some of these shots would be very helpful for some people. Great content can't wait to see you compete again!
Yes I would agree with that. On the last example I wasn’t sure exactly how you would play the correct and incorrect shot. One has more left spin I presume, or less top?
no one.... absolutely no one... Neils: Let me demonstrate! Kidding: your video is very well constructed and your demeanor is much more friendlier than in matches! keep up your good work!

Some times a great player sees it in their head and can execute, but cannot articulate to a protege or someone simply asking for advice. Thank you. Look forward to future videos! Cheers
Tip #2 by far is most useful to apply to all shots. Always chose paths that take you into the line of shot you want. My friends always wonder why I take 2-3 rails on most shots where they would have gone one rail. There is a REASON, the rails are your friend! Like Neil said you're margin for error goes way up. Falling inline with the ball you might have 3-5 feet to play with for speed. You will have your ideal angle it's just a matter of if you're a little long, perfect or little close to your next ball. Going across the line on the same shot you might only have a room to land thats 6" and it's either you got you're ideal angle or more then likely to came short or long. Great video.
Neils, I sure have TOTAL enjoyed watching your channel. I will be at this year's Mosconi cup. I hope I get a chance to meet you. You have helped me with my game, thank you.
Best pool player in my opinion after his surgery and back even better. I had a left shoulder surgery, i couldn't play but watched hundreds of videos. I cant imagine playing better than before. But ill never give up
Yes tough action Ace! Don’t give up! I didn’t have surgery but bad physio caused the injury and then a good one helped me rebuild the muscles back up. Took months of slow build up training. Now it’s 100% again. I recommend using physios that work with top athletes! Good luck!
Great stuff niels! Ball in hand advice is great something i will certainly keep an eye out for. Awesome content! Can you do more mental side videos and maybe some 9 ball break too? Thanks!

Tnx Adam!! Totally correct! But who is Neil?? :) :)
oops, I was just terminated. lol

Good luck!
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen i see, my surgery was a couple years ago as well. Im able to play now. I hope to meet you one day. My Bucket list.
Thanks ace! Keep hitting balls 👍🏼💪🏼😄
