    The PSA need to take serious look at the refs and video ref decisions after this tournament, some really poor calls that did impact games and possibly match outcomes, some were almost blatant, the good call on the double bounce in this match was a complete joke, how could they get that so wrong when everyone else could see it was a double.

      Absolute joke - if squash wants to be in the Olympics, the refereeing needs to be up to scratch with professional sport. Some of the calls here would be embarrassing at club level, where no video refs are available

      Made me realize that squash isn't a sport I want to watch. There was no consistency and some very bad / wrong calls. If an mature like myself can get it right 80-90% of the time why can't the refs get it right? The PSA either needs to use technology or remove the review option.

    for all the talk and efforts being made about making players 'play' the ball, and in doing so promoting (clever) blocking & the refusal to award basic LETs during play; the results have been absolutely horrendous
    what's the point of having a 'video review' option if the video ref can't distinguish between a 'good' and a 'not good' call? and mind you, this has NOT happened the first time around
    it has also come to the point that the commentators, players and referees can't agree on at least 75% of the decisions given, where each one of these entities has a unique perspective on 'a line to the ball' (a player can take whatever line they want to the ball, IF it is in fact retrievable & to judge it to be as such or not is basically the referee's job) this line of decision making is promoting players to stand on their shots and motioning to the referee about their opponent NOT going around them mostly, which again has nothing to do with the choice of the line they are taking and EVERYTHING to do with the quality of the striker's shot & the relative retrievability of the shot in question - everything else is 'make a wish foundation' scenario
    this is how you overcomplicate an already highly intellectual sport and as a result; Squash has not seen a boom in its audience for decades - when people who have been playing this sport on elite club, national and international level, can no longer agree on basic refereeing calls, then how do you expect a new viewer to come in and pick up the nuances of the game and then be involved enough in order to enjoy it as a fan - fans thrive on their elite knowledge of the sport they follow/play - this is how they predict their winners & form specific fanbases for individual players/teams in any sport - MINUS that knowledge, acquired through meticulous observation over the course of several games/matches, the interest fizzles & it doesn't take long before one loses complete interest
    this is ridiculously poor on part of the current administration of the PSA. If nothing else, make the players not playing the match for the night, sit in as video referees as their knowledge of the speed & skill of this level of squash will enable them to evade such absolute failures in the process of video-reviewed decision making
    I've been observing this pattern for a while now, inconsistency of refereeing hurts squash more than most other sports, as the closed cage like environment and the potential of contact at any given time in any particular rally, involves a referee A HECK OF A LOT more than it does in most other sports, and this bit is killing the appeal of international squash & making a mockery out of the Professional Squash Tour
    time to sit down & fix these issues - for good!

      There's definitely an inherent problem with the idea that the non-striker has to give a direct line to the ball. If your opponent plays a loose shot that you are able to play from the centre of the court the natural shot should be to the opposite corner because that will make them run the furthest ... but because you're playing the ball from the middle of the court the direct line is always going to be through you. How do you promote giving direct access without promoting deliberately loose shots designed to restrict your opponents shot selection?

    • @ZeeShaanJamal
      @ZeeShaanJamal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@M0odez that's a fair point, but my point was more general & not specific to a certain condition or two
      I feel someone deliberately going for the player is fairly obvious, whereas in many of the instances that I see in these matches, the line is actually through the other player & the comment from the referee usually falls along the lines of 'you should've gone for the ball, you went for the player' - that seems like an oversimplification at best & a complete misread of the situation at its worse
      keeping in mind that these are professional players who make a living doing this - consistently giving bad decisions, especially in closely contested matches can flip the results & that's quite literally robbing people of their rightful purse

    • @M0odez
      @M0odez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ZeeShaanJamal I'm saying in general, the rule needs to be looked at and clarified because in any scenario where the ball is extremely loose the best shot results in the striker having to give a line through themselves. If the shot is of sufficient quality such that the only retrievable line is through the player, the player cannot immediately become a ghost after they strike the ball so what time period do we give them to clear a line that constitues a "reasonable effort to clear", and if interference occurs before this has the opponent "made every effort to avoid interference" if the striker has the right to that space in that period? It's all so vaguely defined in the rules, and it allows for completely different interpretations that favour the striker or the non-striker.
      As an aside, my personal take on the "going for the player and not the ball" is that if you commit to a line through the other player that you wouldn't have been able to correct if you got taxi'ed, then you went for the player and not the ball i.e. you have committed to interference independently of knowing the actual line to the ball, and it doesn't matter that it happened to be the correct one in the end. But then again, if you guess correctly and the shot is within reach you are guaranteed a stroke, so I think it's a fair gamble a lot of pros deliberately take when under pressure, although sometimes with an arm around the opponent to prevent them from completing any effort to clear.
      That's a lot of waffle to say that I'm in agreement that the rules need to be simplified so the disagreement between commentators, referees and players doesn't happen as often.

    Definitely a double bounce, but for all the cranky haters.....have you ever watched other sports?
    Its not like bad referring decisions is unique to squash.
    Nearly every sport (Olympic or not) suffers from the same type of thing. As long as humans and sport combine, there will be bad decisions, it’s part of life and sport.

    As much as I absolutely agree with those who say it was a double and not good, I still respect the video refs because it is not easy when a win/lose decision hangs solely on your shoulders and everyone is sitting at the edge of their chairs waiting on your one decision... This is the life of a video ref, on a daily basis. People make mistakes, and they are only human. Show some respect and move on.

    Everyone is talking about the lack of good eyesight from referees...
    I refuse to believe someone working at a professional level - and someone who is not working alone... how many refs are there? - could be so incompetent, so therefore next thing that comes to mind was that they have been bought. Happens in every sport... why wouldn't it in this one?
    Not sure which is worse however... being corrupted or the blatant, complete incompetence. Both last calls were dismal... if it isn't corruption, then an amateur referee with video evidence at a club tournament would have done much better than this, a platinum or whatever PSA event.
