The tip about knowing when your oil is ready is invaluable information! Thank you so much for the way to test it without a thermometer! Seriously, the first time I tried this before I looked up an actual video demonstration, I set off every smoke alarm in my house within seconds because my oil was way to hot and I had no way of knowing before I put in the fish. The recipe I used said that you should put oil on your stove burner on high and then add the fish and I literally turned the underside of the fish black within 10 seconds and almost burned my house down within 30 seconds! Its really easy not to take oil/grease cooking seriously until something goes wrong so this information was fantastic. Instant subscribe!
so glad you enjoyed this episode and thanks for subscribing....next week's episode will be a cooking one so stay tuned....should come out on Tuesday :)
Thank man! My fiancé loves beer batter cod! We have a great fish place In our area called Dons Dock in Des Plains, IL.. but I want to make this home made. Love you’re channel thus far!
Like every other video the people at Thundermist Fishing make, this is another great teaching video Ivo. My boys and I have watched you folks for quite some time now. Keep up the great work!
Ivo, this recipe was fantastic!! My wife and daughter couldn't get enough. Thank you for sharing. Dinner tonight reached hero level. Added oven baked fries and stir fried broccoli.
Sounds like a fantastic meal :) So glad you enjoyed this beer batter recipe and send my best to your wife and daughter as well - so glad you were all able to enjoy this together
I tell you what, Ivo. I'm DEFINITELY gonna try this out, some time (along with some homemade potato fries, lemon juice, and Tabasco pepper sauce)! I'm sure folks down in the Cajun gator country (East Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama) would love this!! If I bring in a nice channel out of Balmorhea, I'll give this recipe a try! (double thumbs up)
Made it yesterday, turned out great. I did season the fish aswel with salt and pepper. I made it without baking powder which made it less crunchy, but very tasty anyway
So I finally made this tonight. I used one cup of Elsysum Bifrost winter ale which is a bitter pale ale which I suspect was part of the reason it came out so good, and for the fish I used flounder and it was exceptional! I've had fish fry at many restaurants over the years, but very rarely does it ever come out this good! Thank you for sharing.
That's fantastic Jake...so glad you gave this recipe a try and that you like it :) Thanks for taking time to write and all the best to you over the holidays
Nice job, here some tips to make it even better, use self raising flour (omit the baking powered). replace the cornmeal with rice flour, season your fish prior to battering them.
Try Guiness as a beer, great taste, also season batter a little, let it run slowly off Wood spoon, then it ready. Pat fish in flower before batter, helps it stick better. Cook at 120c increasing to 135c untilgoldenand sealed and serve asap for the taste. My way is a large fillet piece of cod in UK. .
Its the weekend and I counted today as an off today and I followed your recipe. I am eating it now and it tastes great! I also cut up an onion and used the batter and it tastes like something from a restaurant. My only mistake was not realizing how much the temp of the oil was going to drop when I started to add fish but for a first time I wont complain. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for putting the recipe in the description it is very much appreciated. I have come across a numerous amount a videos that say things like here's the ingredients that I have to pause every 2 seconds to write them down or I have to go to their page to navigate through just to try and find one simple recipe that ends up not even being found. It would be much appreciated however if you could put substitutes for the ingredients that you have such as I may not have cornmeal or Old Bay seasoning what other Alternatives could I use? I do not have a lot of money and I'm kind of working with what I have in my house at the moment which is basic flower baking soda and breadcrumbs things of that nature. If you could suggest some alternatives it would be very helpful thank you for your recipe and also having something so simple as the recipe in the description.
Hi there JokerToker and thanks for writing in....you can substitute the corn meal with bread crumbs and for the old bay seasoning, you can keep it simple and substitute with salt and black pepper....you can use 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of blk pepper. Hope you give this recipe a try and that it is a big success for you :)
Hey Ivo! You make it seem so simple, even without a deep-fryer. Can you tell me the size and depth of the skillet you have? It's hard to tell how high you have the oil in there.
Brilliant bud, great video / advice. Would love to know if there is an alternative to the vegetable oil as it has a bad rep for healthiness. You fish looks amazing.
Thundermist Lures How do you prepare your fish fillets for cooking? Do you let them soak in something overnight or cook them as soon as you get home from a day of fishing? I'm curious to know. And this will work for any fish, correct?
Hi Dustin - I do not soak them overnight - I just wash them and then pat them dry, then cook them. However, I do have a recipe where I soak them in milk for 30 minutes and if I get a chance, I'll so a video on it someday :)
Cast iron pans work great, but this time I did not use cast iron and for the oil, you do not need to completely cover the fish...1/2 inch of oil is sufficient, but if you wanted to add more, it certainly wouldn't hurt any :) Thanks for writing in Mike and good luck

Hi Darth - in this video, at around the 4 minute and 40 second mark, yo uwill see me put the fish on a metal track and I explain that this will help keep you fish cripsy :)
Darth Mal get yourself a wire rack. It should be in the baking isle. It’s excellent for drying things without using a paper towel as it circulates air underneath. Pretty cheap too

If u don't want beer use a carbonated water like soda water or lemonade, the fiz is essential to a nice batter
thanks for the tip :)

• 1 pinch ground cinnamon. Good luck :)
