Thanks for doing these painting ones - that's about the only DIY I feel safe attempting, these days! Appreciate all you do to help all of us out here on the interwebs.
I’m a single mom that used to pay and get ripped off or half-off jobs. Thanks to your channel and other kind and knowledgeable TH-camrs I have been fixing my home the right way. Yes it’s a lot of work but the satisfaction of seeing a good job and knowing the quality of materials is so worth it. Thanks and God bless.
A good trick with ceiling paint and it's brilliant (super) white is to add a small amount of black paint. It reduces the likelihood of any imperfections on the base surface. My paint store adds the black tint when purchasing it or their ceiling paint has black in it from the manufacturer.
I can’t thank you enough. I’ve learned how to do drywall, tape texture and paint. Large shop 160 sheets one helper (my wife). All drywall is up, taped and textured. Paint tomorrow. You saved me 14,000 US dollars. And I bought all the tools lift trowels correct buckets. Everything. I did cheat and buy a ridgid drywall gun
I love watching your videos , and I love Paint Life TV as well, you both paint great, but it’s definitely a different approach and I would LOVE to see a live stream with you both!
I used to hate painting, but I've grown to love it once I bought Jeff's recommended tools. Take time, learn to cut, and you'll speed through rooms. Thanks for everything, Jeff, especially the painting and drywall techniques. They've been life-changing and have allowed me to gain the skills I didn't think were possible as a DIYer.
The secret to building your own breathable dragon is just to watch all Jeff’s videos. This guy has so many secrets. How do we really know his name is Jeff.🤔 if you can’t build a house from the ground up watching this channel,, you’re an idiot. Thanks Jeff for all you do. Now, if I can only get my son to build a shed with me. we’re starting off small. I’m just trying to get him off his computer and then we’ll go from there.
You telling us not to use tape is like a server who memorizes orders perfectly training the newbie to not write orders down lol. We are not as good as you
Honestly, painters tape is harder. It will pull paint off and you get feathers underneath. Learn to control your brush, go slow, get a proper cutting in brush and always have a clean damp cloth and wipe mistakes off as you go.
@@catherineandrews8054 you have to use clear caulking to seal the tape and then pull the tape before the paint drys and it’s fine. But after i made that comment i painted the baseboards in my bathrooms with no tape and it was ALMOST perfect.
Thanks for this video! Just a few details to add. The stain blocker in can, I usually use 1-2-3 and I guess it should be the same for Kilz, when used it leaves a thin coat of white powder around the area you sprayed. So better protect those surfaces. I know you already mentioned mud doesn’t flash. Everyone doesn’t have the luxury to wait a day to have the hole filler dried. I usually use the DryDex pink spackling to do repair and paint in the same day. It says on the container «No Primer Required» but in fact it does. I think there are other spackling from DryDex that doesn’t «flash» (sorry I can’t remember the name). P.S. : At 29:14 - You know these characters in movies, sitcoms that do painting... they always drop paint on themselves. 🙄 Jeff, this mark on your head is so cliché, it’s is just unacceptable from a pro like you! 😉😁 (just kidding!)
Ive been painting for family for awhile and was seriously thinking about doing it part time until two coworkers told me today they got their houses painted for $2500 for a 3 bed 2 bath and the other coworker said his 5 bed 2.5 bath house was painted for $1500
Hi, great video. When you are caulking, what do you do to clean your fingers off? Carry a rag? When I was doing a lot of caulking, I would often put up pieces of paper/tape around, so that I could easily wipe my fingers off.
Well that explains what the previous home owner did. We have rooms with latex paint peeling off the walls in various spots. However, because they didn't even paint evenly, I can't just straight up peel the paint off the wall. Do you have any suggestions for the simplest way to remove the loose paint and make sure the rest of it sticks? I desperately want to repaint but I don't want to go through all the effort if the latex paint underneath is just peeling off and taking my paint off with it.
10 minutes ago? This is what I need! I tried using one of those Magnum air brush things (thinking it would be like an airbrush for wedding cakes), boy was I mistaken. I didn't like it at all. It was really messy and loud, and I just didn't have fun, lol. Luckily I didn't have to pay for the Magnum air brush thing. A friend had one I can borrow. Anyways, I used it for the primer, and I said fuck this. I'm doing it the normal way for the final coat of paint. So this will be a useful video!
Hey Jeff, not relevant to this video but in your of your vids you mentioned you got all your appliances from a place outside Ottawa. I’m in that area and in the market for cheap appliances and would love to know where you got them!
I want to start on my living room but I’m scared cause it’s an old house that was built in the 1920’s and people keep telling me about asbestos in old houses so I’m procrastinating what do I do?
Great chanel - just subbed. So - do you have any videos on priming? I tend to prime no matter if I am painting over contractor white, a room that was painted years ago, or new drywall. I have a project coming up to paint over a darker color so I intend to prime before I start formal painting - and NOW, I will sand before and between!!!
Are all indoor wall paints latex based? I can't find any information as to what the paints are made of, the only information they have is whether it's glossy or matt and how washable they claim the walls are after painting. Do these recommendations also apply for "real" (eg. brick and mortar) walls or just drywall?
After you sand, do you wipe down the wall or tack the wall? I also find that sanding is so dusty. How do you contain the mess when living in the house with pets and kids?
The prep was good, the painting is too convoluted. If you're just doing DIY stuff, do your edges, then roll. After 30 minutes to an hour, roll again and call it a day. No need to switch between edged and rolling for the ceiling.
Why does the paint dry in 5 minutes? Even latex paint8 takes time to dry. You are gonna end up hurrying the painting process. Then you need two people.
It takes a while to completely dry but the surface of the paint will begin to dry and get tacky within just a few minutes. As he said in the video, painting the whole ceiling could take 20 minutes or more, so if you edge the entire perimeter before starting to roll, your edging on the far side of the room will be partially dry by the time you get the roller over there and you'll see lines in your paint. But there's no need to rush or use 2 people. Just do it like he showed in the video, edging a few feet at a time, roll that section, edge the next few feet, roll that section, etc until you're done.
I only saw this vid because I was looking up the old one for a refresher (I think Jeff has a grey shirt in the thumbnail for that one). I already did patching, primer (for the old paint, I know I know probably not necessary) and first coat of colour today but I’ll watch this one anyway haha One thing I noticed, my cut lines near the ceiling look “thin” compared to the rest of the wall after I rolled. I swear I loaded the brush into the bottom of a handy pail my pulls were maybe a foot at the most. Any ideas?
Invest in a vacuum straight away if your doing any DIY. There is no reason to breathe in dust and distribute it around the house. That vacuum will also come handy for vacuming cars,
The old door change thing is a matter of preference. I think new doors withbthe fake panels are crap. They dont match the style of many older homes. Flat panel doors are appropriate to mid century builds. Whether they look better with an updated finish in wood tones or panted, well, yes, of course.
I just discovered your channel about 1h ago, and I've been watching videos on painting, and I find it extremely useful and clear, I think you're a great teacher. But, shouldn't you use protection while sending ? Especially with a machine. It produces very fine particles that your nose can't filter and it ends up in your lungs. Either way, great content thank you !
Removing wallpaper… if there are little divots and bumps on the wall from many coats of paint, the glue stays in the divots and your paint rehydrates the dang glue and slumps off the wall.😮 It’s probably from the old school wallpaper that had to use that gloopy glue …
Curious - you had a can of Zinnser primer but Kilz spray cans. Everyone I've met had a brand-preference, do you not care or is there a method to the madness?
What happened to your voice towards the end? Are you ok? Anyway thank you for this update tutorial. I use a damp cloth to remove dust i can't remember if you mentioned that or not. Then the hoover to hoover dust off the skirtings and floor
The house I live in was painted with the cheapest paint I’ve ever seen. I tried to clean it and the rag gets all white from the paint. Do I need to prime after sanding?

Jeff- all these steps and tips are great. I work as a handyman and I have been in some homes recently where the room looks like trash from “professional” painters. No sanding, no attention to detail on the wall board dents etc etc etc. awful.
I started a small painting company years ago as a side gig to help supplement my full time income. I used the same sanding head and handle. They've had it for some time now - it appears to be a lens burn mark from welding or laser.
Thanks will look for that!

What grit sandpaper for the radial sander?
I believe he said he was using 120 grit if my memory is correct. You can use either 120 or 240.

Mask not needed
Would you still sand the wall if it was textured with orange peel or knockdown before prime/paint?
