  • Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
    Today I am showing you my favorite tools. Not because I think you should run to the store and get the same stuff, but because you asked. These are the things that found their way into my pencil case and stayed there. Of course I have tried many other tools, and I do swap out pens or pencils every so often, but these seem to be the evergreens. The deserted island things, you know?
    If you like my free weekly videos, then please consider backing me on Patreon. You'll will be helping me to keep consistently making Draw Tip Tuesday videos, and making them available for everyone for free:

    I always love "favorite tools". When I see someone's palette on IG I often all what colors are in it. Helps me learn.
    I've used fountain pens for writing in my journal for roughly 55 years. I've not paid attention to the water resistance because it didn't matter. So in the States, many shop for pens at a small business called Goulet Pens (I'm not connected to them). Not only is there Platinum Carbon Blank ink, but a document ink is water resistant. A good brand is De Atramentis - they have many colors. Like Koosje, I like to match the ink to my pen color. I have dozens of pens, hence many bottles of ink! Another thing regarding Lamy is that you can buy nibs separately! If you bought a pen with a nib you don't like, you can buy a new one for about $16. And to change it, just grip the nib already in the pen by its sides and pull up. Then push the new one in by the sides.

    What, no magic pen! That explains it, I though my Lamy pen was broken. I will now have to move to a rainbow pencil as those ARE magic pencils. Thanks Koosje, I can’t wait to do my first amazing masterpiece with the powers my Magic pencil will bring me.
    Great video and if I may say, you are looking very well.

    Thank you for your supply update Koosje. My supplies are mostly the same as yours. I have tried many others, but I tend to go back to these basics. For person starting out, in terms of balancing cost and quality, I would refer them to this video.

    It's interesting to see how different artists choose their supplies.
    Here are the ones I have in common with yours:
    Lamy Safari, with convertor - ✔
    Platinum Carbon Ink - ✔
    Sailor Funde Nib (Green one), with convertor- ✔ I bought this several months ago after seeing you use it in one of your videos. It's a tricky pen to use, but it's unpredictability adds to the fun!
    Daniel Smith paints and metal palette, ✔ Although, I'm still experimenting with different palettes and set ups.
    Brushes - various, some with cut-down handles to fit in my "on-the-move" pencil case. I don't have Da Vinci though.
    Pencils: I put a couple of graphite pencils and mechanical pencils in my carry case.
    Sharpener: I put a small folding sharp penknife in the bag and a folded bit of sandpaper.
    Tissue paper - ✔
    Bulldog clips - ✔
    Watercolour Pencils - ✔
    Caran D'Ache crayons - Neocolour II, instead of your Neocolour I. Although, I've only used these at home some far.
    That's a cool and very convenient pencil case by DELDE, I might have to hunt that one down...

    Hi Koosje, would you be able to share what you carry in your everyday bag that is used for outdoor sketching? I just want a sense of what do you pack and how do you pack them so it’s easy for you to pull out your sketchbook and essential tools to start sketching. I find it hard to balance so many things in hand when I see something interesting to sketch. I end up just taking a photo and walk away.

    I love my Lamy as well, but not sure about getting water resistant ink for it… I love fountain pens but hate filling them, and when I don’t use them for some time the ink won’t flow… I assume it will be worse for that kind of ink! Loved to see your favorites :-)

    Omg no, I know a lot of people who actually use all their colored pencils, 150, 120, 72…. It’s a great investment, but you’re right, it’s a personal matter, I just think the phrase “you’ll end up not using most of them” is misleading, a lot of artists buy small sets and end up needing a bigger one, this is worse if your brand it’s not sold open stock, you end up spending a lot more.

    • @nicoherrerai
      @nicoherrerai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mixed media artists are the ones who usually just use a few colors from a set, but if you’re a colored pencil artist, specially if you do realism you’ll use all, believe me

    • @KoosjeKoene
      @KoosjeKoene  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Nico. It is indeed a personal matter. I realize that.

    Hello Koosje,
    I love your videos and you did mention a pencil sharpener here but I have tried many pencil sharpeners and listened to various videos reviewing them but most of them don't sharpen caran d'ache pencil crayons that are wider than a regular pencil. You showed a very tiny pencil sharpener, do you use that for the caran d-ache? Thank you for your interesting and helpful videos.

    • @KoosjeKoene
      @KoosjeKoene  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I showed one from Faber Castell. What’s really important, is that the blade is sharp. Also, try turning the pencil sharpener around the pen, rather than turning the pencil. Apparently, that way we hold the pencil more steadily so that less pressure gets on its lead.

    Fun and inspiring video! I am a little curious about the da Vinci Petit Gris Pur #10 brush that doesn't seem to exist? Can't find any da Vinci Petit Gris Pur brush with a black handle? Only the 418 series brush that looks nothing like yours in the video.

    • @KoosjeKoene
      @KoosjeKoene  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be that it's only available in a certain shop in the Netherlands? I am not an expert, and I definitely would not recommend looking for this exact brush. Remember, it's not the tool that makes the artist.
      It's a soft round watercolor brush, not too small; i like using it.

      @@KoosjeKoene Thank you, yes I am aware - sadly! how easy it would be if there was a magic tool!- but I am always curious about other people's tools. I have my favorite brushes and have no intention of buying another ;-) but I always like to check up other tools. Just for fun!
