    Chaz Palmenteiri wrote this, it’s based on his one man show, which he still performs. I was fortunate enough to finally see it last year, so amazing, based on Chazz life growing up. Every studio wanted to make this film based on the one man show but they all wanted a big name for Sonny so Chazz kept refusing, it wasn’t until Deniro got involved and Deniro said no one else can play Sonny.

  • @Protoman85
    @Protoman85 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    The best part of this movie might be the counterweight to Goodfellas, where Henry talks about the 9-5 worker has no balls, but here Deniro has that great line about how being a working man not succumbing to the easy out of crime being the bigger man.

    Chaz Palmitieri, wrote the movie and played Sonny. This is a true story of him when he was a small boy. He is “C “the boy who had a father that was a bus driver and befriended a mafia guy on the corner bar he wrote it as a one-man show off Broadway but you can still see today he’s been touring doing it again by himself, and I tell you when you go and watch it, it’s like watching the whole movie again with just him on stage. It’s fantastic.

    Chazz Palminteri was a struggling writer/actor with very little money when he created and mounted "A Bronx Tale".
    He turned down several offers for the filming rights (including one for $1,000,000.00) because no one would grant him the role of main screenwriter or let him play Sonny. DeNiro saw the show and went to see Chazz backstage.
    He told him they'd make the film, share screenwriting credits, DeNiro would play Lorenzo & direct, Chazz would play Sonny and if they shook hands on it THAT would be the deal.
    They shook hands and the rest is history.

    Another Chazz Palminteri performance worth seeing is Bullets Over Broadway. It's a Woody AlIen comedy set in the 1920s with Palminteri as a would-be mobster-playwright, and John Cusack in the typical Allen role . It came out a little after this film.

    favorites watching my favorite! the c and Jane love story is legendary also I love the insight from the mrs at the end where she references the scene at the end with Pesci and C turning him down and how it showed how it was more about his relationship with sonny and not the life per se. That never clicked for me and I love that you caught that, very perceptive

    Lilo Brancato actually went to jail many years after this. Was robbing a house with a friend, who wound up killing an off-duty cop in the process. Didn't learn anything from Sonny, after all.
    P.S. He was also in Crimson Tide - he was Vossler, the guy desperately trying to fix the fried communications panel.

    I grew up in the Bronx (but years later) so it's always fun to see it portrayed on film even if I found out that to portray the 60's Bronx they had to film elsewhere in NYC

    If I'm not mistaken, this film was DeNiro's directorial debut. I went to see it just based on that and expecting him to play the Sonny role, but came away impressed with Chazz Palmenteri. I agree with other commenters, this film is very underrated. It got mixed reviews when it opened but I liked it and thought DeNiro did a good job. Check out The Good Shepherd with Matt Damon which he also directed.

    The craps game brings back memories of 1970 when I was in high school. We'd buy fireworks in an Italian section of Providence. You had to walk up these steps in between two buildings to an alley where they were displayed on folding tables.
    There was a landing part way up the stairs and there would often be old men in suits shooting craps and throwing around $100 and $50 bills like they were loose change. Lord knows who they were but they didn't mind some kids going through the game to get fireworks. 😀

    Great reaction guys, and a wonderful choice of movie.
    TWO takeaways have stayed with me from this movie since I saw it.
    My eldest brother chose to rip me (and my other brother) off once. I was fuming at the time, but then I saw this movie and thought, 'It IS actually worth that little bit of money to rid that pathetic cheapskate from my life'. He avoided me for 25 years until his death - a total bargain!
    My wife failed Sonny's test. When I drove, I always opened the door for her first. NEVER did she ever pop the door lock for me after I'd walked around to the driver's side. Sadly, I only saw this movie _after_ we'd divorced, but it _did_ cheer me up and HELPED me realise what a narcissistic scumbag she is (sadly, she's still alive, and plagues my children to this day).
    So, cheers, 'Sonny' - thanks for the good advice. Sorry I wasn't able to make better use of it.
    (My dad - unfortunately - couldn't hold a candle to _either_ of the fathers in this movie. He had NO good advice to offer - just continual withering criticism)

    Lillo Brancato fell into crime in real life in the late 2000s. During a burglary attempt with the father of his girlfriend, an off-duty police officer confronted the two men and the older man shot and killed him. Brancato was charged with 2nd degree murder and was found not guilty, but was found guilty of attempted burglary and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but he was released on parole after 4 years in 2013. He recently returned to acting and kicked a drug habit that he had before and during his prison sentence.

    a recurring line that comes in mind is "the saddest thing in life is wasted talent", ironic the way it mirrors the choices of Lillo Brancato,
    but at least he's trying to turn his life around...

  • @divadivad9164
    @divadivad9164 ปีที่แล้ว

    That last line of the film couldn't be more ironic for the actor Lillo Brancato who playe C.
    "I learned the greatest gift of all...the saddest thing in life is wasted talent; and the choices that you make will shape your life forever..."
    Brancato was charged with second-degree murder, and his trial began on November 17, 2008. On December 22, 2008, a jury found him not guilty of murder, but found him guilty of first-degree attempted burglary. On January 9, 2009, a judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison. On December 31, 2013, he was released on parole.
