So some of you may already know but it's not something that I've tried to bring up too much but that is that i actually suffer with asthma, now where mine definitely isn't as bad as others and could for sure be worse, it's still something that i have had to adapt to in my training and something that still plays a big part in my day to day life and i still make sure to carry and inhaler with me if I'm going anywhere for a significant time.
In this video I want to share the things that have helped me as an asthmatic while trying to keep being able to perform at my best as an athlete.
    1.Take your Medication
This one is pretty obvious but it still took me a long time to actually listen to my Dr and take my medication every morning and night but it only made things worse for me as i grew up and now I make sure i take my inhaler twice a day without fail. Also make sure you go to your check ups at your Dr’s because they can tell you how your asthma is adapting, whether it's getting worse or better and can recommend the latest medication for you or find one that just works better for you. For me i was on 2 inhalers for around 15 years until i went to a dr and they told me that i could just have them both mixed into one which works so much better for me.
    2.Warm Up Your Lungs
Again this is something you should already be doing but as an asthmatic you warm up is almost the most important part of your exercise as just like all of your other muscles your lungs also need to warm up to physical exercise, especially if it is intense exercise where you are going to find yourself breathing heavily regardless of your asthma.
For me I like to do a few little exercises specific to my breathing before I start exercising. I start off by taking deep breaths through my nose into my chest and holding them for as long as i can and then i do the same thing again but breathe in through my nose to with my belly rather than chest which is hard to describe but basically when you breathe in push your stomach. Belly breathing is actually considered more effective as it pulls down on your lungs creating negative pressure in your chest which results in your lungs filling
    with air.
This method is known as diaphragmatic breathing which had many benefits over breathing into your chest including,
    Lowering your heart rate,
Reducing the effects of the stress hormone cortisol as it helps you to relax,
    Improves your core muscle stability
Slows your breathing rate so you use less energy
So obviously from those benefits they will create more as they work down a chain of each thing that they affect.
    3.Run
The final tip for controlling your asthma that I'm going to go over is running, and if you're not at that stage yet then a paced walk is a good place to start. Now even with the other tips there are still good days and bad days as an asthmatic especially through season changes and levels in pollen and so on but every day is able to be a better day. This is where running has really shined through for me. The exposure everyday to the outdoor air through woodland areas, busy roads and high streets really exposes my lungs to different types of air throughout the year while under controllable stress as if it gets a bit too much. I can always start walking for a bit while I stabilise my breathing again. As long as you keep running throughout the year you will find that you really give your lungs more of a chance to adapt to the changes in the environment as they change rather than doing your workouts inside for 8 months and then all of a sudden throwing your lungs to a completely different environment outside and expecting them to adapt immediately. That constant exposure to the outside while under load really has made the biggest difference for me and is something that i wouldn't be able to train without!!

Asthma was something that really held me back when I was younger and there really wasn't much info about what I should do other than take my inhaler and exercise gently so its good to be able to help people who might feel stuck like I did!
