It has such a Ghibli sense of weirdness to it. There is something about the conflicting feeling of two very opposite emotions that is very special in Emil's design. Seeing something unsettling speak in a way that is the total opposite of its appearance is disarming and kind of incredible. Originality like this is very rare, and Nier deserves more praise and attention for what it managed to do. There are other examples of this throughout the game.
Looooool These 3D faces were really awful (or at least they look awful now) but oh god... I have always thought that Father Nier looked like shit and bland with an obviously failed attempt of making him look badass.
