How to use the Essentials Kit - Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition

- So you've picked up the Essentials Kit and you want to learn to play! But what now? There's a lot more in the box than the Starter Set, so let's go over everything!
In this video I'll help break down what's in the box and what to do with each item. You'll be playing Dungeons and Dragons in no time!

Great guide thanks! Just me and my 11 year old, so I’m going to attempt to be Dungeon Master. He begged for this for Christmas and today is the first time we’ve actually attempted to try understand it and not just replace the box lid in terror lolol

@@KristensEpicAdventures I got it for Xmas in 2019 but still using int 3 years later. It's a great box set, seems better than the box set they are going to put out on Aug. 1st of this year which has fewer components. Plus the adventure is a good "sandbox" type game
this video really helps me to decide to play DandD as dungeonmaster.

13:15 The kit comes with four six-sided dice (4d6) so that players can roll their stats (Str, Dex, etc). Roll 4 and drop the lowest for a 3d6 stat.

So you can't choose your own stats?
@@thebellbrothers3279 You can! There's 3 main ways u can choose ur stats, Point Buy (morre customizable), the "roll the dice" and the "default array", wich is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, and you can choose where to put wich one of it.
Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for you for years. My youngest has wanted to play D&D with us for so many years and we even bought the essential kit years ago. But I raked through dozens of videos and could never understand how to play D&D even though I really wanted to. I’m very introverted so I never had the opportunity to play with a group and was relying on reading and watching these videos. After probably over 6 years, we are playing our first game of D&D and my heart feels super happy. Thank you so much ❤
Having bought the STARTERS Set, being a beginners/starter, I actually now think that the essentials is a better starting place for my son and I. Thanks for your breakdown of the kits. It has helped a lot.

I'm going to be the DM. BTW, Member of Dungeon Masters Guild. I started as the DM for a group of young professionals in Silicon Valley back in the 1E days. We'd play marathon weekends from Friday night to early Sunday evening.

A good guide for a person who is just getting started and I think that sometimes it's better to meet with everyone give them a character sheet and a photo copy of the "How to make a character" part so that when everybody is ready they give it to the dungeon master and start playing.

Excellent review for new players, and enjoyable as well for vets! Over the years I’ve played D&D from AD&D through 3.5e, with a bit of experience in 5e. I’m currently trying to find a good group to play with, and I actually picked up both the Starter and Essentials sets for if and when I can actually find someone to play with (the sets are very well priced). Thanks again for the great content, and I hope I can find a group soon to enjoy a game that I deeply enjoy so much!💯 P.S. Epic Answer to Epic Question: Player is my preference but I’m ready to guide as DM as needed.

Thanks for the insight on this game. I’m 46 and a little late to the table so to speak. I picked this set up sometime in the fall of 2020 and I literally just opened it today. I was pretty overwhelming when looking at everything so I decided to come over to TH-cam and try to learn something. I watched a few videos and then I came across yours. You honestly calmed my nerves a little bit about this game. I’m still a little confused but optimistic about this. So thanks you for the video. Now I know what not to look at and I know I need to find another person to play this game with me. I’m going to see what other videos you have and try to learn a little more.

Exactly what I needed! I played back in the '70s and '80s (OG!), but haven't played since. My kids and I saw this kit at Barnes and Noble and decided it would be fun to try out. I needed the refresher, definitely!

Great explanation, thanks. I'm planning to GM my first 'adult' group of D&D with some work colleagues/friends in a month's time (already ran some Steamforged Animal Adventures with my kids). Some new to the hobby, some far more experienced than I. Nervous, but excited - big responsibility being some people's first contact with the game.

This is really helpful. I've thought about playing with some friends (I would be the DM) and thought about getting this kit over the starter set as I think my friends would have more fun with the open nature of it.
I've watched a few videos now on both sets, but this was the most helpful one to push my decision.

@@KristensEpicAdventures 10 months later and I finally got to play 😂 While I don't regret buying the set since I'll use a lot of the items for future campaigns (the DM screen, the dice, some of the magic item cards etc.) I don't think we'll ever return to the campaign from the set. It was fun, everyone wants to keep playing again, but I noticed that the parts that were the most fun for both me and my players were the things I added on the fly or invented for it, so in the future I'll focus more on that homebrew angle.

Great work breaking down the Essentials Kit. I believe WoTC is going to put out a new or updated box in the near future, so I'd love to hear your take on that as well.
One of things I really found useful in this kit is the introduction of Sidekicks. They really did a good job expanding the rules in Tasha's, and I've found that Sidekicks are really useful in a bunch of circumstances. They are even great for new players to use as their primary character since they have a slimmed down set of rules and abilities.

This is a great kit, I haven't picked it up yet, but it's on my list.
My favorite part is the sidekicks because it can be a challenge to play with just 2 people sometimes and this helps a lot! It's also a great price for everything that comes in the box to get you playing because buying all the core rulebooks can get expensive Thanks so much for watching! 🤓

My wife and I live in a very isolated town in northern Canada, so there isn't much to do. We bought this kit because we're both interested in playing but have never actually played. I'm planning on being the DM. We'll see how it goes!

DM here! I picked up the EK, and I'm planning on running a shorter campaign for a group that's mainly newbies. So far, I've used one of the quests as a base for a one-shot, reskinned to work in that group's larger campaign's universe when I took over the dm chair so our forever dm could have a go. For the new campaign, I'll probably use some of EK quests and throw in some homebrew so the adventures are tailored to my group.
