Nobody (and I mean nobody) who has reviewed the starter set has gone into any detail on the different text blocks in the book, what should be read out loud, what shouldn't, what's inside and how to use what is in there. Most reviewers don't even open the book, they all just talk about how good the adventure is and that it's "a great set". Far too easy I imagine to forget that absolute beginners have absolutely no idea how to use the items in the box so again... thank you. It's been driving me crazy trying to find a review like this. Happy to say this video made me place an order straight away. :)

I've had the Starters Set for a while now, havent run most of it though. It was cool to hear someone talk about it more in depth. I'm sort of at an impass with the Epic question though. I love imagining all the environments that the DM describes when playing, but when they say "How do you want to do this?" in a combat is also really fun

I played the starter kit campaign for the first time a few days ago and funny thing was that no one wanted to follow the goblin trail after the ambush, they all wanted to head to the city. XD This was in a group of 5.

@@KristensEpicAdventures pretty slow since they were fooling around but it was great fun We used legos as a base for what's happening, so we don't get lost in the madness of a million words, the treachery of infinite numbers and the darkness of what lies in the goblin caves Over all, great experience but we can't play for a while cause school is not letting us have any free time lol
My whole life I heard about DND from tv shows and movies, but where I live no one knows about it or plays it..I just started reading and learning about it and as much as I am overwhelmed..I have a feeling that I just discovered a new passion in life..☺️
You can find online groups to play with over many different platforms! It can be overwhelming but the Starter Set helps new people learn slowly as you play. You only need the set if you are going to run the games as the DM though, if you are going to be a player you wouldn't need this, just maybe a Player's Handbook if you want.... My friends were unfamiliar with dnd and they were surprised about how interactive it can be, took them a while to grasp it but in the end they just loved it. My storytelling skills definitely needs work but my friends are very encouraging, I can't wait for our next session.
Just picked this and the essentials kits up at my local Comic/Gaming spot. I played heavily in the 90's for a few years but people fall away and it's hard to find new players. Soo, I'm gonna try my hand at DMing, this video helped a lot! Thank you.

@ I think it went well. I improvised on the spot and added some different things to it already. 😅 it was fun. But sometimes it’s hard to get the players moving. Or that the players want to move too fast. Idunno. I kept referencing the book quite often.

Im very interested too to start getting into d&d. I ordered the starter set last week and the players guide is on it's way as well. I have no group here yet so im going to have to find one but i was kind of worried that i was going to find mostly teenagers - early to mid twenties while im 40 myself. I would feel uncomfortable when the age difference is too much. Good to see people around my age get interested too.
It is a really good one! I had the red box starter set back in the 80's but no one to play with LOL. They are doing a great job of making it easy for people to get started 🤓
I love the level of creativity all the characters have. NPC interaction is fun and combat is so much fun. When you fail, you can just make up a story as to how your character failed. Lol🤣

I would suggest that 1 person be the DM for the whole adventure. It's recommended that the DM read through the whole adventure before playing and then they would know everything that's going to happen. If the DM needs a break, you could always have someone else run a one-shot for a session, and then go back to the other game. Thanks so much for watching! 🤓🎲
I just picked this thing up from Gamestop. My nephew had expressed interest in playing to me but he works a 3rd shift job so he'sdragging his feet on it. I'm gonna take the initiative and offer to DM but I really don't know that much about D&D. I'm depending on the instructions in this kit will tell me everything I need to know.

I just got this o was gonna buy all the books I just got players handbook I didn't get the monster manual yet. I'm a jock not a game dork but I've always been interested in this game but aren't friends with people that play so I wanted to try myself.
Looking forward to trying d&d with this set for the first time today, but I have to say, it is a bit overwhelming. I'm a software engineer of 30 years, and most would consider me pretty darn smort, but this has got me a little nervous lol.
I found one of these used at a collection store. No dice sadly. Had a question, I know most players & dungeon masters don't really use them. But is it ok to have a rolling tray for the players dice to minimize them possibly rolling off, even though that isn't too likely to happen? I bought a log style looking tray which gave me the idea last month.

I'm not sure if Wizards of the Coast released different versions of the Starter set with and without the advertisement? Are you referring to blank character sheets? The starter set uses pre-generated characters and does not include blank character sheets. Thanks so much for watching! 🤓🎲
Thanks so much for watching, Justin! In the starter set there is no board or figures. The whole game is designed to be played in your imagination if you want... Of course you can add a map and figures for combat if you want to but they are not included.... 🤓
I was looking at the stat blocks on how to use the monsters attacks and everything and was looking under the giant spider and I’m really not sure how to use any of their attacks
That can be a tricky one. On the spider's bit attack, if it hits the PC, it does piercing damage in addition to maybe doing some poison damage depending on the players roll. The player has to try and avoid the poison part by making a constitution saving throw. The web attack has to be recharged each time it wants to use it. The first time it is available to use as an attack, but if the spider wants to do it on it's next turn, you have to roll a d6 to see it it recharges. Recharge 5-6 means only if you roll a 5 or a 6 does the spider have this attack to use again. This is on page 55 of the starter set rule book that comes in the box. Hope this helps! So i have a question, during game play, i have seen groups make their own maps and such, for a complete starter, how would you go about tracking where everyone is? I know you said the DM has a map, but for the players, how would they track where they are?
This is a great question! You can play "theater of the mind" style and just jot down who is right up against an enemy and who is 5-10 feet away, 10-15 feet away etc, or you can print out a player version of the map to put on the table (or draw it out) and use tokens or minis to keep track of where everyone is. If you do "theater of the mind" style you can also make the players keep track of how far away they are because the DM already has a lot to do. It doesn't have to be exact when you do it this way, just a general idea of where everyone is. Thanks so much for watching 🤓
Great (informative, clear, helpful) video! A question I have (as a complete noob) has to do with the freelancing of rules. Do you have any suggestions or guides for those situations where the dungeon master decides the rule? As a noob, the rules are a bit overwhelming but freelancing the rules isn't any less overwhelming. What would be really helpful would be some examples of when and how a dungeon master might make up or freelance rules. Thanks!
Hi Ed! So glad the video was helpful! One example I can think of is maybe you are not sure if a tie goes to the attacker or the character being attacked during combat. In the moment, I would suggest making a decision on the fly to keep the game moving and then look it up after. If the rules was different, you can use the published rule moving forward next time. the set does not include miniatures, however if you do not have access to minis already you can simply use pieces from other board games, lego minis, paper cutouts or small dollar store toys.
Since I'm going to play this alone I will have to be the dungeon master and player. About the character sheet (other than the names) what the blank spots are for?
Any blank spots on the sheets will likely be filled in as you play, but for a beginner game, they might not get filled in at all. Thanks so much for watching 🤓

If you want to give your players a map for combat you can find the maps in the Dungeon Master's booklet from the Starter Set online as a player version (these can be printed out) that way no secrets are reviled to them. I have played RPG's a few times, but still a real newbie.
As I get older (48 now!) I realise how much fun these games are, and have spent some great nights with mates (who have been playing for many years) playing things like Pathfinder.
I would love to have a try at DM'ing, and have just bought the D&D Starter Set - thank you for this video, so helpful!

@ I think it went well. I improvised on the spot and added some different things to it already. 😅 it was fun. But sometimes it’s hard to get the players moving. Or that the players want to move too fast. Idunno. I kept referencing the book quite often.

I have no group here yet so im going to have to find one but i was kind of worried that i was going to find mostly teenagers - early to mid twenties while im 40 myself. I would feel uncomfortable when the age difference is too much.

It is a really good one! I had the red box starter set back in the 80's but no one to play with LOL. They are doing a great job of making it easy for people to get started 🤓

I love the level of creativity all the characters have. NPC interaction is fun and combat is so much fun. When you fail, you can just make up a story as to how your character failed. Lol🤣

Does a DM need to be the DM the whole advanture? Or is it possible to change DM per session?
Just think that your character took place in the story. And the dm knows the quest already
I would suggest that 1 person be the DM for the whole adventure. It's recommended that the DM read through the whole adventure before playing and then they would know everything that's going to happen. If the DM needs a break, you could always have someone else run a one-shot for a session, and then go back to the other game. Thanks so much for watching! 🤓🎲
I just picked this thing up from Gamestop. My nephew had expressed interest in playing to me but he works a 3rd shift job so he'sdragging his feet on it. I'm gonna take the initiative and offer to DM but I really don't know that much about D&D. I'm depending on the instructions in this kit will tell me everything I need to know.

I am an OG player from the 70s and bought the starter set to start playing again. There are a lot more rules than I remember!

I found one of these used at a collection store. No dice sadly. Had a question, I know most players & dungeon masters don't really use them. But is it ok to have a rolling tray for the players dice to minimize them possibly rolling off, even though that isn't too likely to happen? I bought a log style looking tray which gave me the idea last month.

I was looking at the stat blocks on how to use the monsters attacks and everything and was looking under the giant spider and I’m really not sure how to use any of their attacks
That can be a tricky one. On the spider's bit attack, if it hits the PC, it does piercing damage in addition to maybe doing some poison damage depending on the players roll. The player has to try and avoid the poison part by making a constitution saving throw.
The web attack has to be recharged each time it wants to use it. The first time it is available to use as an attack, but if the spider wants to do it on it's next turn, you have to roll a d6 to see it it recharges. Recharge 5-6 means only if you roll a 5 or a 6 does the spider have this attack to use again. This is on page 55 of the starter set rule book that comes in the box.

It’s tough some times just because some of the rules in the book are described more for someone who’s been playing a long time and not always written for ppl starting from the ground up. So i have a question, during game play, i have seen groups make their own maps and such, for a complete starter, how would you go about tracking where everyone is? I know you said the DM has a map, but for the players, how would they track where they are?
This is a great question! You can play "theater of the mind" style and just jot down who is right up against an enemy and who is 5-10 feet away, 10-15 feet away etc, or you can print out a player version of the map to put on the table (or draw it out) and use tokens or minis to keep track of where everyone is. If you do "theater of the mind" style you can also make the players keep track of how far away they are because the DM already has a lot to do. It doesn't have to be exact when you do it this way, just a general idea of where everyone is. Thanks so much for watching 🤓

Great (informative, clear, helpful) video! A question I have (as a complete noob) has to do with the freelancing of rules. Do you have any suggestions or guides for those situations where the dungeon master decides the rule? As a noob, the rules are a bit overwhelming but freelancing the rules isn't any less overwhelming. What would be really helpful would be some examples of when and how a dungeon master might make up or freelance rules.

Hi Ed! So glad the video was helpful! One example I can think of is maybe you are not sure if a tie goes to the attacker or the character being attacked during combat. In the moment, I would suggest making a decision on the fly to keep the game moving and then look it up after. If the rules was different, you can use the published rule moving forward next time.

I know im only seeing this video a year after release but i was wondering if the set comes with character pieces or if it is all just imagining
the set does not include miniatures, however if you do not have access to minis already you can simply use pieces from other board games, lego minis, paper cutouts or small dollar store toys.

Thanks so much for watching, Rob! D&D was designed so that you don't need a board, it can all take place in your imagination! If you want to give your players a map for combat you can find the maps in the Dungeon Master's booklet from the Starter Set online as a player version (these can be printed out) that way no secrets are reviled to them. Or you can draw the map out too.... 🤓
Does the starter kit have all the dice including the percentile dice?
No percentile but you can roll the d10 2x for the "tens" and "ones" 🤓
