I teach at a Dutch primary school. Last week, all the higher-year students were allowed to participate in workshops hosted by parents (some kids went baking, some went to a Christmas Village, etc.). Quite a few of the kids wanted to play chess. I hosted, together with two students' fathers, a short chess course (pretty basic concepts), followed by about 1,5 hours of free play. While I was walking around and checking in on the students, one of the dads asked me (he prepared a presentation for the kids on basic chess concepts) to play, while we walked around the classroom. I play about twice a month, 1,5 hours each time against my grandfather. While I held up all the way into the late middle game, I noticed my pieces were quite tied up and I resigned after some passive moves and losing a pawn. Then he told me that back in the day, he played tournaments and was a 2100. I never played someone about as strong as you, I now see the importance of playing of of a plan hahaha. Winging it didn't work. Such a fun game, chess is.

Time management is an inherent part of the game though (and thus of playing strength).
If a player ends up with too little time to convert a winning position, what does it matter.
Had they played faster, the position would also be different.
You may be correct that she's overall stronger, but losing on time - even in a better position - is not how it gets proved.

As a kid I thought that P-Kr3 (...h6) is a useful, risk-free way to do something when there is no clear plan. However, I began to have trouble in games, esp. QGDs because I like to move the f-pawn and eventually the squares around the king get too weak. Later on, while watching some GM commentary I heard them refer to such moves as 'hooks' or something to attack. I think maybe there are a lot of strong players, even IMs who play P-Kr3 without thinking about the future. As for the queen's bishop, it's always a problem piece and simply placing it on b7 isn't a panacea solution. Generally speaking, the piece on c8 likes to jump into the game on the k-side with a bang!. Both elements require great patience, which perhaps is a poor mixer with early, short-term tactical possibilities. well, I'm talking too much, and being a weak player probably sound ridiculous. Thanks for the video - I enjoyed it.

  • @lostalone9320

The one way to make GMs sweat is to put them in board positions they've never seen before and make them play "pure chess" just by analysing the board. They'll still beat you, because they're better at chess, but it's a LOT harder to play like that.
It's like challenging a racing driver to a race where you're both in reverse. They are definitely a better driver, their skill will definitely still show, but when they don't have the muscle memory and the old habits they have to really focus on the fundamentals of driving.

Hi Anna, I'm not a really good chess player, but I love this game for the reason that you present so well in this video format: chess is an incredibly exciting game. I am very happy about this format from you.
By the way, I always play without a clock, otherwise I can hardly stand the tension :-)

3:56 I don't think he is putting pressure (with his knight) on your e3 pawn, (probably won't trade a knight for a pawn), as much as he is stacking on your h7 pawn. He has a lot of power facing at your king area. So I have to watch more and see how you get out of it. :)

He was singing 'time is on my side, yes it is', while his end game was weak. I place him at 1500.I think his greatest tool was observing your behavior of consuming time and being verbal and he was using it against you, like a decent poker player looks for tells.

1900-2000 for sure, as he mentioned his opening he used to play seeing from a GM.

I have to point out Anna that in a lot of these videos you question your own ability or set yourself up for a "strong opponent" before anything has even happened. No need to question your own skills, you have earned your place among masters.
