    I remember when Corned Beef was dirt cheap and never really seemed to go up in price for years but then about 10 years ago, it suddenly shot up in price.

      Back in the Soviet era practically identical meat sludge was called the Tourist Meal. Cheapest meat product you took with you when hiking or just having a snack with a shot of Vodka.

    I was taught in catering that if you chill the can first it both comes out of the tin in one piece and also slices easier looks great, clear winner 🏆

    An absolute staple when we were kids but something I've eaten very rarely as an adult and no idea why! My mum would make hash cakes by mixing left over mashed spud, corned beef and an egg. She'd form them into little patties and fry them. Served with baked beans or mushy peas and brown sauce! Also had corned beef hash, corned beef cottage pie and corned beef fitters! It did used to be very cheap but at nearly £3 a tin its a bit of a luxury item lol!

    Love corned beef hash. Always best to keep can in fridge for a few hours before using. Comes out of can easier as well 😃 great channel

      Yep 2 hours in the fridge stiffens it up enough to avoid it breaking apart when removing from the tin.

    Oh that was a trip down memory lane! We used to get tins of corned beef all the time when I was a kid, for sandwiches, and my dad's speciality corned beef fritters with fried potatoes!

    I always think of my grandparents when I have a tinned corned beef sandwich. It's a sandwich that comes with a lot of good memories.

    Many moons ago, where I worked, a guy there was always having corned beef and onion butties for lunch. What he would do was throw the corned beef and a peeled onion into a food processor, then give it a few pulses until the onion was all chopped up and mixed in with the corned beef. He spread that mixture on the bread - like a potted beef sandwich. It does sound weird, but out of curiosity I tried it and it was quite tasty! 😋

      I remember one time I was in hospital and for dinner it was corned beef pie, I had never heard of it as we just had corned beef on bread with brown sauce, but I must say the pie was great it was just corned beef layered with onion covered in pastry but it was great

    the yellow one also states that it was packed under Brazilian government inspection. if you put the tin in the fridge or even keep it in there before opening it, it comes out of the tin easier

    Hi Gareth, the beef loses approx. 20% of its original weight during the Corning process. Hence the 120gm coming down to 100gm in the finished product 😉. P.S. Thanks for your service Buddy 👍👍👏

    I love Corn beef too bits, usually fry in a little oil or water with onions, tomato's, garlic, tomato puree, sweet peppers, black pepper serve with basmati rice, sweet corn and salad. Sadly Corn beef is £3.50 in my area in London, add £1.50 I can get a good portion of beef from the butchers that last three days in a curry or stew.

    The Asda one is the healthier choice as it contains less salt and when you read the ingredients the princess one really isn't worth the money, I love shops own brand stuff and buy a lot of Aldi own brand , I really don't understand people who say oh I only buy this brand or that brand , more money than sense as my mam would have said .🤣 Keep bringing us your great videos I for one really enjoy watching them 👍👌

      Correct, the brands are laced with sugars & salts to get you addicted. It's why people say the cheaper stuff doesn taste as good, they're hooked on the extra goodies but a couple of weeks off the fancy stuff & your taste buds adjust. Healthy for body & pocket 😊

      I used to work in food factories, and the rule is this: don't buy high-end processed stuff, because what they do is add more sugar, salt or fat. Thats all. It's the same quality of ingredients. So buy cheap stuff and add your own shite.

    Hello Gareth, those aren't ring pulls stuck to the cans, they are known as a key. Corned beef is salt cured brisket of beef, that's why the final product is lighter in weight than the brisket it's made from. The name corned comes from the large chunks of rock salt used in the curing process.

      That sounds like the American corned beef particularly New York Jewish deli style. It is totally different and far superior to the cans of Brazilian army ration corned beef we get in the UK. It's more like Pastrami, which is also insanely expensive in the UK.

    Many years ago I worked behind the Deli counter at a Supermarket and certain people would buy Corned Beef sliced from the fresh counter, I remember one lady saying ‘I can’t stand the tinned stuff’ what she did not know is that sliced corned beef from the fresh counter is exactly the same as the tinned, it just comes in a bigger tin and it’s refrigerated and then sliced.

      Yes Mary that’s pure food snobbery.. what many don’t realise is tinned food, meat, veg, fruit is way fresher than any so called fresh or frozen food, because the tin is completely sealed from air the food loses non of its essential vitamins and minerals. But because it’s tinned many have this snobby view. If it wasn’t for tinned food our soldiers back in WW1 & 2 would of starved too death. That tinned meat, veg and fruit kept our armed forces fighting fit.

    As a visitor to Morpeth many, many years ago - close to the bus station a cafe had baked potatoes with hot corned beef plus fried onion plus a touch of tomato sauce for a filling which was excellent! With melted butter was even better.

    Hi Gareth, I love corned beef myself. I've always found the cheaper brands to be just as good. When I was younger, my mother used to make corned beef, mashed potatoes and beans. It is absolutely delicious all mixed together. Also corned beef, mashed potatoes and cabbage all mixed together. The later one is really good for farts. Enjoy your weekend mate. Cheers

    I understand that the stamp on the top identifies the canning plant and we can conclude identical product . Certainly as a bully beef fan I always buy the most economical brand . Great product . Corned beef hash my fav .

    I have Asda own in my cupboard,it was £2 and all the writing is exactly the same as the just essential one, the only thing different is the packaging. I’ll try & get the JE one next time I order!

    Easiest way to help get corned beef out of the tin is to chill it in the fridge for a few hours to firm it up. It will make it much easier to slide or lever out of the tin.

    I love corned beef, my mam used to make us a dish called layer of which was layer of corned beef, layer of beans, layer of mashed potatoes baked in oven with cheese on top, lovely😋so I will make my layer of with this, great recommend, thanks bud x

    Hi, just a little tip……. Keep one of the corned beef tin ‘keys’ in your car. When you shop those keys will release the trolley that takes a £1.00 coin, just in case you don’t have a coin handy xxxxx brilliant video friend. I shop at ASDA and try to buy the yellow labels xxxxx I’ve had the corned beef and it’s delicious. I was a little sceptical a first but there’s no difference in the taste xxx

      @@BaldFoodieGuy yea I agree Gareth the Aldi corned beef is good I often buy the sliced 10 pack corned beef in the packing as opposed to the Aldi tinned corn beef lol 😅I tend to be fated with the tinned corn beef had a few slight cuts on my fingers over the years lol 😂 but I like the sliced corn beef for convenience in toasted sandwiches 🥪 😊

    Bit of a corned beef fan myself. I've done this comparison before. The Just Essentials is a bit more gristly. If that bothers you go for the regular ASDA for an extra 35p which truly is indistinguishable from the Prince's at a whopping £1.40 extra.

    Yes corned beef used to be so cheap years ago, my mum would buy quite a few tins of these (at least 4 at a time), very versatile and we would have them in sandwiches with tomatoes when we were at the seaside. Mum would also make corned beef n onion pie, chuck it in a cottage pie along with the beef mince to make it up and also add it to a beef stew with extra veg and dumplings to make up the amount as the week went along.

      Yeh did you know you can also make a decent spaghetti bolognaise with corned beef? When I first moved out from home years ago and was skint I used to make spag bowl with corned beef as buying mince meat was a tad expensive for me, and most can’t even tell the difference.

    My hubby loves corned dog 🥰 in Dubai i fridge the cans so when I carve it it’s not too soft. When I was small my nanna used to make corned beef egg and chips, chips from old potatoes in a chip pan, sat tea, fonze was on and bread and butter and it was bloody tasty 😋 🥰

    I've been buying Prince's reduced salt corned beef from Tesco. It used to be £2.30 and I would buy it when it was on offer at £2 from Tesco or Iceland. The same corned beef in Tesco now, is £3.50

    I used to work at a convenience store and this old man would alway come and buy corned beef from us.he was the only customer buying this so we used to keep it for him but sadly after his death we stopped stocking it as no one ever ask for it

    Love tinned corn beef and use it to make a corn beef pie - just add gravy and breakdown the corned beef block creating a nice filling. Short crust pastry base and lid and cook until the pastry is brown. Works great with any tinned corn beef, I use the Aldi/Lidl tins these days and makes no difference to the taste, just your pocket.

    I remember the prices of these going up & up.....& up & up till now £2.20 for the ASDA! I stopped buying it, it's a joke like Heinz. TOP TIP - Keep the can ring puller handy to use to get shopping trolleys rather than use a £1 coin. Once you unlock it/released it just take it out & put it back in your purse/wallet, it comes out with ease with a wiggle.

    The difference is you get more arce and lips in the just essentials one.
    Corned beef has the bits of meat nobody would eat.
    Just essentials just has a little bit more.

    Aldi & Lidl both have the identical product under their own labels and, you can't tell the difference between either of them and Princes. Recently Lidl had it on special offer at £1-54.
    I love it on a sandwich or, in a hash it makes an easy cheap meal. Love the channel, thanks.

    Good to see this as a comparison. 👍Do remember that the Brazillian stamp on the bottom of the can counts for little re the actual end quality of the product. There have been some serious issues with imports of Corned beef et AND bans ! in the past.

    Gareth,pierce the top of the smaller end of the can before you open it a couple of times and the release of the vacuum will make the meat slide out a tad easier.Take good care.

    I love corned beef, I always chill it first in the fridge, it cuts better, if you want thin slices. I also like baked potatoes with minced corned beef and grated cheese. I take out all the potatoes from the skins add butter and mash them up, add grated cheese and minced corned beef, put back in the oven for 5-10mins delicious 😋

    Your right back on the day corned beef was really cheap...I used to make tatties corned beef and onion.and beans...called stovies in Scotland...and it filled bellys and was super cheap to make.....love your reviews...been watching you from the start....I new you would do well at this..top man.

    Try frying onions, tomatoes,sweet peppers,pinch thyme.all-purpose.cook till tender then add the corn beef half cup water cover serve with rice.yum Caribbean style.

    A tip for getting the corned beef to “fall” out of the tin:
    Over the worktop, pierce the opposite end (before or after opening with the key) with a can opener, just piercing it breaks the vacuum.

    I've had 3 cans of the Just Essentials corned beef and in two of them i found large pieces of cow tooth, and yes it was tooth and not bone and large pieces of bone in the third one, this would suggest to me that Asda are using beef cheek. I found the Bramwells one a better choice and its currently £1.79 a can. The best way to test corned beef is to fry a large slice and see what it breaks down into, thats when you will discover is there are any pieces of tendon, skin etc in there as it doesnt show when its cold and out of the tin.

      Cow cheek actually makes a lovely steak as the fat content tenderises the meat while cooking. Like pigs cheek these old cheap cuts are making a come back but getting more expensive.

    The taste test doesn't lie. I love corned beef but I refuse to pay £2.50 for a tin. Problem is I hate the jelly & the fat & it takes me ages to scrape the excess off. Bit of a faff but worth it in the end. A tin will last me a week for my sandwiches so under £2 is pretty good I reckon 👍👍

    I've never been a fan of corned beef straight out the tin, though I do love a good corned beef hash. I might have to make one now I've seen this! Watching your videos always make me feel hungry!

    Corned Beef Hash is one of life's superb comfort foods, especially in winter.
    Our family have made this for many decades and, as far as I know, it's just a mix of fried onions (use a quality oil like Olive Oil, and never use nasty Seed Oil), then mix that up with some Mashed Potato and Corned Beef, then fry that lot vigorously until really crisp on one side, then flip it over and do the other side, then serve it hot with HP Sauce.
    The main hurdle is getting quality Corned Beef. There is nothing worse than finding, say, bits of bone in with the beef. That merits an Instant rejection, the meal goes in the bin, and that brand is not bought again for many years, or until that nasty memory fades.
    I think most are getting it right these days and, as this fine video illustrates, quite a few probably now come from the same place, just with different labels.

      @@grahamjohnson4702 No bone, ever? You've been lucky then! Thankfully, it isn't common but, it's very unpleasant when you get some in a tin.
      Genuine butter (not mixed with Seed Oil) is also fine, but we've used both that and genuine Olive Oil for many decades without issue. There are also other vegetable oils than Olive that can cope with higher heat, Avocado Oil for one. I do not mean nasty Palm Oil, or any Seed Oils. Seed Oils are not vegetable oils, the clue is in the name. Seeds are not vegetables, that is just an epic food industry con trick when they describe them as vegetable oils. Everyone should cut all Seed Oils from their diet. If in any doubt, best tip is to go and find out how they are produced.

    I tried the essential brand corned beef a few weeks ago when it was 75p. Haven’t found it since. Cheapest was £2.50. But, it was fantastic 👌👌

    A lot of places have the exactly the same product, and the only difference is the label they put on the outside. If you ask me this could be the case here.
    By the way, put corned beef in the fridge for an hour or better still overnight, as it makes it binds together better so it comes out the tin better, slices better and also makes it taste much much nicer.

    corned beef in Lidl is £1.45 a tin. I can remember about 10 years ago when these were 45p a tin.

    Ahh yes that Brazilian made canned corned beef is very popular, even with us Aussie's. Across the major supermarket chains it sells for AUD $2.50
    The sodium levels do vary from brand to brand, 685-965mg per serve.
    Just love a corned beef, mayo, lettuce, cheese and tomato sandwich.
    If you're making savoury muffins, push a piece of cubed beef into muffin before cooking. It's delicious.

      We've had the most rain on record for this year and still two and a half months to go.
      Wherever some other countries are in drought, we've been getting their portion and some.
      However, a sunny dry weekend ahead.

    Corned beef seems to have been a British staple for ever! There's so much you can do with it from sarnies, to hash, to battered, etc. More versatile than Spam, which I like hot and cold. Weird that Asda ingredients which are fine dont add up to 100. Why does only corned beef come in a not square pack with a key? Spam doesnt - its a ring pull. That's a massive price difference! Thanks for sharing.

    I used to love the M+S tinned corned beef , it was the only one that tasted a bit different from Princes etc .
    They stopped selling it about a year ago and have never had it back in since !
    Ironically it was cheaper than the Asda one is now ! ( which I will be buying after this video ) .
    They also have stopped selling crisps this year also ( the cheaper normal ones) .
    I grew up on corned beef and crisps - both British staples no now gone with no fanfare 😢.
    No potatoes in Britain !

    Another great review about 'real life' food. If I had to compile my top ten list of last meals, sliced tinned corn beef with boiled potatoes (dried in the saucepan until floury and then generously covered with knobs of butter), would be on that list.

    I always recommend decanting corned beef into a tupperware lidded box. Like with most tins, a lot of bacteria on outside of them. Corned beef much maligned but great for sarnies and even salads. Fried hash with chips, greasy but super tasty.

    Slice a tin of corned beef up and put in the bottom of a loaf tin, pour over a tin of beans and top with mashed potatoes and put in the oven till top of the mash is starting to get crispy, and serve with veg and gravy 😋

    Keep the corned beef can in the fridge. Peel off the label as far as possible. Run warm water all over the can very briefly then open the can and the beef should come out easily. Dispose of and work with the can very carefully as it is razor sharp.

    I love your comparisons. Though in the US we have Aldi and Lidl in our town and I appreciate the company brand comparisons with higher priced brands. One suggestion, that you consider and report on the texture of a product and how they vary. Keep up the good work!

      Joel same here in the UK. First a Aldi gets built then you can guarantee there will be a Lidl built just over the road. In my town population about 15,000 we have two Aldis and two Lidl stores.

    I love corned beef and always keep a tin in the cupboard for emergencies 👍🏻 sliced from the dehli is better for sarnies but for corned beef hash I prefer tinned , Prince’s is my go to 👍🏻

    Never heard it called corn dog before, always known it as bully beef.
    The one on the left looks redder.
    Lower saturates and salt would make the essentials version a better choice.

    Oh this brings back memories for me especially when my dear mum god bless her used to come home after shopping at Benest at millbrook jersey ci and realised there was no key to open the tin , never mind good old tin opener will do, yep corned beef and tomato sandwich with salt and pepper. I was gutted no key to open the tin , that was my favorite part. Nice one mate.
