Tonya Harding (USA) - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate, 1st Attempt

  • I've combined her first attempt free skate and her re-skate into one video clip: • Tonya Harding (USA) - ...
    Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Tonya Harding of the United States had skate lace problems when her original laces broke during the 6-minute warm up. Her team did not have a proper spare lace for this kind of an emergency and ended up using whatever they could find, which apparently was not long enough for her to properly tie her skate properly. In order to avoid being disqualified for not getting into her starting position within the 2 minutes after they announced her name, she would rush out ill prepared and started her routine. She would bail out of the opening triple Lutz and then go to the referee to show the referee her problem. She would be allowed time to fix her lace problem. It seemed that Tonya expected only a small break to change her lace and then go back out to skate, but the announcer came on and announced that she would be allowed to reskate at the end of the group and immediately called out Josee Chouinard of Canada to skate.

    The announcer "Well she's obviously still worried about the lace but she should be more worried about the performance but I guess you can't be worried about the performance unless the equipment is ready". No shit sherlock. She's probably focused on not breaking her ankle.

    Two things that strike me as a bit weird:
    1.Has anyone considered foul play with her shoe lace. The timing would be right.
    2. Has anyone noticed the negative tone of the male commentator?
    “this is a girl who had a problem with her costume at us nationals a year ago;
    she had a skate blade break at a skate america completion in oct; and now the public address is announcing Tonya Harding’s name, and she’s still lacing up her boots"
    1. Tonya had no problem with her costume, the judges did
    2. Tonya didn't "have her skate blade break", it broke (she probably didn't have the best equipment money could buy, and she skated hard)
    3. obviously Tonya must secure her shoelace for her own safety purposes before getting on the ice. perhaps someone should have run to the judges and informed them

    • @AMD1114
      @AMD1114 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      He was'nt talking about the judges nor liking her costume at a competition in either 93 or 92 Tonya's costume came undone at the back while she was skating and they stopped the music for her coach Diane to fix it and then she went on to skate again. but yes he was horrible about Tonya.

    • @liouxcifer
      @liouxcifer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      It wasn’t foul play, nor was it a setup. She had poor equipment as she wasnt as financially well-off as most other competitors are. Shit like this happens, honestly, especially back in the day before there were a lot of regulations and precautions. It’s extremely unfortunate.

      In regards to your point #2: “Tonya didn’t ‘have her skate blade break’, it broke” Are you interpreting the word “have” in that sentence as if he was saying that Tonya...like...”arranged” for her skate blade to break? Willed it to break? Coerced it into breaking? Because I find that to be an odd interpretation unless you can think of any alternate way he could have phrased that in the English language. All I could think of was, “This is a girl who experienced a rude blade-a-breakening...”

She could have ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of her life, relying on painkillers just to get through the day. Not to mention the fact that the assailant’s actions in that fight-or-flight moment would have been completely unpredictable. They did this so that Tonya had a better chance at winning a game. Karunya Sabapathy , Tonya had an arrogant attitude. Even going into the Olympics she refused to attend early for enough practice. She was out of shape, physically, mentally and emotionally.
      We'll never know the full truth...but she does. I suspect it's not good.
      I lived through seeing this unfold.
      Yes, she came from an impoverished and worse, very abusive background. So do many other people but they do not choose to hurt others.

      Karunya Sabapathy I understand your point of view & many now think she wasn't guilty.
      I think she made very poor choices, due to her life circumstances. I do think the judge in her criminal trial was far too hard on her. She was decimated by huge fines and given a life long ban. I believe she should be allowed to coach professionally now.
      People have committed far worse crimes & not received such harsh penalties.
      She was convicted for trying to hinder the course of the investigation. There were notes found in her handwriting at the Boston Arena. The criminals were told to hit Kerrigan on her landing leg......Who else would know such things.
      There is a place for redemption for everyone. I just wish she'd told the truth after all this time.
      There are some excellent documentaries on the whole incident.
      I Tonya is an excellent film but it's not a documentary.

    Her coach did have an extra lace, they didn't have time to re-lace her whole boot before she took the ice. The rules stated that you had to be on the ice and start the program by the time the 2 minute warning was up. The problem is that Tonya used different boots than most skaters. Hers laced all the way up with eyelets on the boot. Most skaters have hooks on their boots. The hook boots use shorter laces.

      In the movie, 'I, Tonya', shows a document of Tonya Harding growing up. Her childhood was very tough but she made it through. At the age of three her mom made her start doing figure skating. Her mother abused her at the age of 9+, also saying she wasn't good enough. She found her first love and he abused her. Tonya left him but eventually went back to him and married him. He abused her even more but she stayed. One time her and her mom were 'fighting' and her mom 'accidently' threw a knife right into Tonya's arm. Figure skating was Tonya's dream growing up and her dream came true. Tonya Harding was the first American woman to land a triple axel, Harding also was the first in the world to notch two triple axels in a single competition. She did that at Skate America in 1991. She was very competitive but she took it too far one time. She took a metal bat and broke her opponents kneecaps because she was convinced by her husband it would be a great idea. She eventually got caught and in trial she got banned from figure skating for life. You should watch 'I, Tonya' to learn more about Harding's life.

      Me, too. And why did the crowd have to boo her? Kerrigan was also a victim: she clearly outskated Baiul, but the judged gave Baiul technical marks almost equal to Nancy’s, though she two footed at least two jumps, almost falling on one. Sloppy spins and her one combination, if you could call it that, was thrown in carelessly at the end, almost as an afterthought. Nancy skated flawlessly, with at least two very difficult combinations. Her spins were centered and her signature spiral was breathtaking. It was an insult to her to score Baiul so similarly. Baiul deservedly won the artistic mark, but had she been scored fairly in the technical mark, Kerrigan would have won. It wasn’t Oksana’s fault but her win was due to two things: (1) eastern bloc voting. Jan Hoffman cast the decisive vote in Baiul’s favor. A fine skater of the old East German system, he wasn’t about to let an American win. The Russian and other east bloc nations followed suit. (2) The judging panel was disgusted by the whole Nancy-Tonya scandal and decided someone had to be punished. With Harding finishing well out of the medals, Nancy was sacrificed. A pathetic treatment to a young lady who was totally innocent and the victim of a terrifying attack from which she miraculously recovered. Ironically, Baiul’s star dimmed quickly; she succumbed to alcoholism and was never really the skater that once dazzled the world. As for Kerrigan, she ran off with a married man and raised a family, occasionally appearing in skating exhibits, demonstrating she’d hardly missed a step since her Olympic days. Tragedy befell the entire Kerrigan family a few years later when one of Nancy’s brothers killed her beloved father. It seems there were no winners in this competition. So very tragic.

He would get increasingly annoyed with her antics as the games progressed but by the time her skate lace was magically fixed, (rushing Josee Chuinard ahead a spot and wrecking her performance as a result,) he lowered the boom on her when her second attempt happened. He also witnessed her gamesmanship in 1993 in Prague when she had a broken skate blade that magically repaired itself without any major repairs or replacements when it was clear they weren't going to let her wait until the end to skate. This part of the broadcast was clearly his breaking point and he was NOT kind to her during her second attempt.

She felt sorry for herself and wanted special attention, just simply more than other contestants. I feel bad for Tonya. I mean, people, they seen the story in one side, judge book by its covers, not even felt how she felt. She was responsible for Nancy leg, but it did not mean she wasn't talented. Not just talented, but underrated, disrespected, letting down by people. Skating is her life, her mom did not love her, her husband abuse her, her friends turned on her back, and now, judges could not even give her a second to fixed her lace? And banned her from the most loving thing in her life? They will tell me i'm so dumb to supporting that chick, but at least I still have a soul. Watching her bleeding with a big punch in the face hurt me so bad. A swan caging with dogs. God blessed Tonya

Because of Nancy and Tonya, I came to familiarize myself with the likes of Katarina Vitt, Oksana Baiul, Bryan Boytano, Kristi Yamaguchi and others. It was a train wreck that you couldn’t take your eyes off. The ratings were through the roof, Super Bowl like numbers. So much back stories, headlines, talk shows and so on.. In today’s world, talk about breaking the internet, this would have destroyed it…. 94’ was a crazy year… This was just the beginning, then there was that white bronco….. Good lord’….

  • @shawnajensenjohnson5482

    This era was such a very long time ago. I was there watching this at that time in '94'. Ice skating is my favorite Olympic sport to watch. I am the exact age of Nancy. During this time, everyone in the audience couldn't help but feel pain for what happened to Nancy. Tonya couldn't possibly skate without the guilt she felt after the cheating choice she made that authorities found. We all felt for Nancy and the lifetime it took for her to achieve going to the Olympics. There are consequences to each choice people make in their life journey, whether it's a good choice or bad. Tonya s choice reflects one of the consequences in this TH-cam clip.
