Nothing hand forged by him from scratch with hammer and anvil. I got lucky.
I like your choices....if I had to choose three or four I'd take my old leather sheath Mora, my old timer set (2) of skinner knives never seen duplicates, and likely my machete by tramontina in Brazil. My mora has made so many meals and is a great camp knife. My old timers are great steel and always come hunting. Both of these selections have likely been with me for well over 10k kms in the bush on foot. The machete has just served me so well for everything and never let me down. I guess we all have our favourites.
I have a friend who was a missionary in Brazil ( and a machete guy) and he says the cheap Tramontina machete is about as good as any. I have a couple friends from Mississippi ( machete country) and they say the same thing.
I love the large knife you have and I have many knives myself and one of my favorites is the Buck knife with the long blade which is over 35 years old and I used it when I lived in San Bernardino, California. When I came to Arkansas where I have been living for decades. I own other large blade knives also, including one from a German company, but made in China, and one Japanese knife. When it comes to folding knives, I have several of them also with one which was issued to me while at one air base where we rigged parachutes for cargo which was dropped from the C-130 aircraft. That knife is now my favorite and is used for camping now and has two blades on it. One regular blade, and one blade with a slotted edge which fitted into the locking mechanism of the chute. The knife still looks new like it was when given to me.
The Condor Bushlore is my go to knife for all around camp. I paid $25 for it years ago and other then a little surface rust it's as good as new... 1075 high carbon steel isn't as hard as 1095, but it's easier to keep sharp in the field. .

Now I'm in full agreement with you. I only use shorter knives, a leatherman and a pocket knife. With the exception of the Ulu and the Kukri when the situation calls for them. I think I could cut back to only 5 knives and be able to do anything that requires a good blade.
If you've watched this channel you know I'm a big Ulu fan. I make 100+ each year at least. I have a couple vids on making them.....but as for the Kukri....Ive never tried one out. I know a lot of folks love them, but ive just never had one to mess with. Any suggestions as to which brand to try?

Nice collection of blades u got there Dave! Ur son sounds like he has good taste in knives! I had bought an ulu knife, ordered it from an Alaskan native about a year ago... awesome knife. That was my 2nd ulu! So... decided to keep it at 2...
Great review. You are such a good story teller I think you could read the phone book and make it sound good.lol. I love knives. Not sure why. I am a 50 year old woman. I don’t hunt. Or camp (yet)etc. But I have had horses most of my life and you always need a knife in the barn,or anywhere really. I often have a knife in my purse or car, since I am Canadian lol I need to be careful as we can’t just carry “weapons “ around. I just like knives. 👍🏻
The Cold Steel Norse Hawk, when removed from the handle, is a great Ulu knife. I have one and I've used it for camping many times, both on and off the handle. Two tools in one. My three favorite blades, thats a hard one. I've been collecting knives since the early 80's but I'll try and pick three out. 1. Just got it this year, the Becker BK16, awesome little knife, and holds a great edge. 2. Condor Hudson Bay knife. I've had mine for three years, and love it. 3. Not a knife but the Cold Steel Norse Hawk. Great Tomahawk, and when you take the blade off the handle, you have an Ulu knife. So two tools in one.
Have you checked out the condor travelers hawk? I’ve been collecting since the late 80’s. I’ve got an RMJ original I bought from Ryan Johnson himself at Ft. Lauderdale Fl. War Memorial Auditorium When he was first starting out. I bought it used. It was his personal knife he used in a sheath he made. My absolute favorite knife made from 01 steel
@@rebelyell2741 Condor makes good blades and I have a few, five to be exact. But of late they are getting pricier. So more then likely I won't. I like what I have.
I love my modified Forgecraft knives. They kind of ruined expensive knives for me. I wish I could post pictures. I have been convexing mine and they cut and carve beautifully.
Hi Dave, I just ran into your & Brook's channels, and I have to tell you they are great channels. I'm having a ball going back over all of your past videos. I actually saw Brook's first & thought, that looks like Brook from "Alone". Of course it was. I will have time to catch up on your channels as I have a broken foot, and am having surgery this week so if you see new comments on your older video's, that's why. I'm going to hate being laid up, but will enjoy catching up. From one Michigander to another, thanks you for sharing.
I'm originally from Mesick, Mi. Now in Cadillac. Born & raised in Wexford county. Not too far from your winter home. I've always wanted to visit Alaska. Hopefully, someday. Hopefully I will see you around here. If I do, I will try not to bug you, but I will say "Hi". Thanks again for sharing. Great Ulu making video!
Your son may have swiped your old bushlore, but at least he’s got good taste! It’d be great to see what you would come up with for a knife design of your own....Great video, as always.
Thanks J.....actually I asked Mick about the knife and he said he had no idea where it was.....the next day Brooke found it in her backpack....so the boy didn't have it after all. As far as a design of my own....it would be pretty simple, lol
Watching your "three no five" video made me think of Monty Python and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch: "Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out." Still a great video, I just have a strange mind. Thanks!
I'm a cheap dude who buys his gear from flee markets and garage sales......so a $200+ knife is a bit out of the norm for me......but it IS a great knife and I like it more all the time.
Another great video and admire the Old Hickory / Forge Craft which I've been carrying for 55 years . An Ulu is awesome and I wonder if you have made one from the top of a coffee can or other heavy duty tin can . Thanks for this video .
Yes - L6 saw steel is infinitely better than the lid from a tin can . I meant an improvised "knife" made from a tin can = which can skin and butcher small and even large game - used for cleaning fish and removing scales - fire tinder prep etc. Weighs almost nothing and sheath is made from scrap leather or cardboard and duct tape . Always in the pocket of a hunting jacket and tackle box . THX & ATB
Good choices David...i also have a modded forgecraft that i don't use anymore...throws sparks with a piece of chert better than most my other blades and takes a great edge, holds it none to bad either...gave a buck for it at a garage sale...money well spent...wish i could say the same about all my knives!!!...atb...woods
I love mine too. I may actually bring it back into use.....I kind of missed it! I can't say I have any regrets on any of my knives.....but Ive never spent more for a knife than it would cost to take my wife out to dinner.....so they are all pretty cheap knives! ...except the Genesis....but that was a gift.
Man, You've got a Basket full of Knives🔪 I'd like to get an Knife Blank and make my own also. I have made a knife out of an old Flat Car Spring before, but I'm getting to old for that much work anymore👴
Dude, you should start busting out those ULU's. After watching your wife's video a few days (weeks maybe) ago I was looking to order one off of Amazon but was perplexed because they were either super cheap or not. Lemme know when you start making them again because I would love to order one.
I like your videos. I have said it before but you responsibly review stuff. I know in my reviews I take the responsibility of reviewing stuff very serious coz people are depending on your guidance with their hard earned money. Condor makes utility quality affordable. Well done and thank you for your content.
Thanks ERS. I feel the same way. The LAST thing i would ever do is have a never ending stream of stuff sent to me and say "this is awesome" to everything. When I started this channel I knew what kind of review I was going to do .....straight up. Actually I don't do a lot of reviews because I don't have a lot of gear and what I do have is mostly old used stuff. LOL
I really need a better knife! Especially now that china isn’t shipping here! Lol Honestly I’ve only ever heard of Case, Gerber, and Swiss I think? I never really figured out how to or where to buy a good knife.? It’s nice to be able to feel them in your hand before purchasing.
After that first batch I haven't made any more but I have enough materials gathered up to do another run soon and You will be the first guy I tell when they are available.
Hey Stephen, just to let you know I'll be putting ULU's up for sale on eBay .( April 5th) ..either tonight or tomorrow. I'll post a video announcing it later either today or tomorrow so people will have a chance to see the announcement before the UlU's go up for sale. You are the first guy who knows, just like I promised.
LOL! I was a lead vocalist/writer for over 25 years Whip. For the first ten years my stage name was John Blackrose, and I do have a black rose tatt! PREEMPTIVE APOLOGIES for the novel you're about to ignore! You probably know that I'm an absolute menace with longed winded posts, but I can't help myselfish! LOL! I'm actually about to replace that track with a track which I've started to get closer to what the final deal will be, so there'll be less tin and more thick, mid range tones. So when you get a chance, have another listen. I'm recording all my personal all time favorite songs to help me get my vocals back in shape, but mostly because I just love these songs and have wanted to record them for many years. The first ten years or so I was playing my absolute favorite bands in all cover bands.Beatles, Wings, classic rock from 6-s - 70s That was the last gasp days of live bands in my home town Toronto - pronounced "Tron-Oh" before bars started using disc jockeys to save money. So around that time bands were scouting my ass, and I resisted for a long time because I wasn't interested in doing full originals, but when the club scene dried up, I decided to take a crack at the big burrito! So I joined a great original band and decided to take a new stage name so people wouldn't mistake the band with my past groups. I started out with Johnathon Von Bronzesnake, figuring a fiddy buck name like that was bound to fool people to thinking I was awesome! LOL!! I was getting better, and better at vocals, but my true gift turned out to be writing, and the musicians in the three or four original groups I was in back then, were always amazed at how I could write awesome songs in ten or fifteen minutes! One or two of people's favorites were completed in five minutes. LOL! Boy did I fool them!! LOL! So, one of the very best bands back then was right when "metal" took the throne, and that group were always being talked about in musician circles. So one summer we held a huge bash at the guitar players house, which was in the middle of nowhere, and so we were able to sell over 200 tickets in a week or so, and I didn't count, but the best estimation I could make was close to 350 or 400 people turned up, and we had a 10,000 watt system!! LOL! Two guys from "Another Lie" turned up, that's the band people loved and ironically, I had left a band called "White Lie" to join "Venger" which seemed very much like destiny to me! lol Any long, long story short, those two guys told me there were there to speak to me about leaving Venger to join Another Lie. It was a hard decision because of all the people I had worked with, these guys were very important, dear friends and I turned the offer down. Ian, my dear friend who was the guitar player in Venger got wind of the offer and he encouraged me to take the opportunity. He actually said I had progressed to the point where Ian truly believed I could get a real shot at the big league, and he was truly thinking about MY future and convinced me to go for it, because these opportunities don't come along very often, if at all. So, I joined and my new stage name was John Von Bronzesnake, then John Bronzesnake, and finally Vaughn Bronzesnake, which is an incredibly genius play on "Von" Bronzesnake!! ;() The End! LOL!! Jack - Canada
Another great video, I'm a recent subscriber and yes your wife recommended your channel so you can thank her. LOL! That's a really great selection of knives. I haven't tried any of Condors knives but I've been considering going the blade blank route with them so I can customize to my tastes. I am definitely an Old Hickory fan and have several that I am particularly fond of, haven't been able to bring myself to alter any of them so am on the lookout for a flea market or yardsale cheapie that I won't feel so bad about butchering (pun intended). I was wondering about how you felt about the Green River/Russel knives and blade blanks or if you have had any experiences good or bad with them, thanks!
Someone else mentioned they a while back, and I checked out their site. I was totally unfamiliar with them and I don't have any experience to tell you one way or the other. Sorry.
The 3rd and fifth knife would be great secondary knives. But as a bushman myself, I like my fallkniven s1x for batoning and chopping which I do a lot when camping and hiking. The thing is a beast of a knife without being too heavy and too large.
Hey friend 🙂 great video and great knives 💪🏻😀👍🏻 Have you seen the 2018 lineup for Condor? A lot of 1095 steel🎉🎉 I really like that Hudson Bay. My favorite knife is the LT Wright Lagom. I dinged it on a rock the other day though😩. No more fancy edge from the shop. I have a knife coming on Monday that I think my give it a run for it’s money though. The boat tail scandi also from LT Wright. It is a lot like that first knife you showed but made with the same steel as your Genesis. I really want you to get this Lagom in your hands. It’s so awesome and 100 bucks less than that Genesis. Hardly any reviews on it. Would you be interested in reviewing if I sent it to you for a few months?
I appreciate the offer Spider, but I'll be heading north in a couple months and things will be really busy....so I'll have to pass on the review....It looks like a great knife.
Bushradical ok friend the offer stands if you ever decide to check it out👍🏻 back north to Alaska? I’ve never been there me and my fiancé are thinking of taking a cruise there for our honeymoon.
Hey K! The cabin videos I did really did well and thats where things started really going up for me. My small cabin vid has 200k views.....that was one of the very first videos I wanted to do ....I wish I would have made tat video sooner, lol.
I would never pay $200 for a knife I can make for $20 w/ A2 tool steel or A2 stainless.. The temper you get isn't as good as it should be so I usually re-harden and re-temper my blades.
The ulu knife is funny knife. Most people down state and a lot of Alaskans don't really know what the you is. Yeah they see the semi circular knife and know it comes from Alaska. Well long story short, my daughter teaches up in east central Alaska out in the villages. One year I said I wanted a you knife.. So she ask one of the villagers if he would make a you knife for her father. And he ask her why her father wanted a woman knife. I thought it was funny and the fact that the blade has CHAMPOIN circular saw blade stamped on it. But it is great for spinning a seal or making salad.
Challenge excepted. this vid is titled (3 Common Misconceptions About Carrying A Fix Blade) I go over my favourite knives in this video. th-cam.com/video/Fvdgb--sNhc/w-d-xo.html
@@Bushradical No problem, I was being slightly sarcastic. For price with much higher performance, Moras are the best. They are not Ray Mears Woodlores but all Moras preform just as well yet most Moras are very affordable. The Moras that work as well or outperform the knives in the video above are the: - The *Mora Robust* (the amazing bargain bushcraft knife) - $16 USD - The *Bushcraft Black* or *Bushcraft Orange* - $46 USD - The Mora *Garberg* stainless or carbon - $76 to $100 USD Most people use the cheaper Moras ($10 to $25 USD) because they are expendable, they are economical, & how well they work in the field. In the World & the USA no wise outdoorsman would not have at least one *Mora* in his pack. Stay frosty on the post 100th Veteran's Day
LOLS Knew that it was gonna be a wipeout on the sale of the ulu...Who the hell doesn't want a handmade, traditional Alaskan knife ? Time to get your arse back in the machine shop Dave lol. Living in the UK we're kinda restricted by stupid knife laws, living close to Glasgow restricts me even more, as police don't take too kindly to people who carry, due to the bad name that the city got for knife wielding eejits...Lock knives - BANNED ... Knives over 3 inch blade length - ILLEGAL...For the safety of the public aspect yeah,it's all good, but for people who wish to get out and do stuff bushcrafty :( Stopped and searched because you're carrying a backpakc and a tent, automatically assumed you're also carrying a non regulation knife as well...LAWS ARE SHITE !
It would be great to buy 100% American but I don't make it a point to exclude El Salvador.....China on the other hand , I try to buy next to nothing from China.
I dont know man , Gerber is shit. Esee and Ontario and condor use 1095. Id say get a dope Finnish puukko cause they perty. Personally I use a glock 81 or a Mora or a dagger for fun. A hatchet or a machete from El Salvador cause they are the best in the world.
Condor Hudson Bay and Condor Bushlore are my go-to knives for hiking/camping/prospecting.
Along with the Victorinox Forester I carry every day.

Nice collection of blades u got there Dave! Ur son sounds like he has good taste in knives!
I had bought an ulu knife, ordered it from an Alaskan native about a year ago... awesome knife. That was my 2nd ulu!
So... decided to keep it at 2...
Right on!
Always good to have a knife with you.
Bushradical I agree!
Hello Dave thought I would try again to see if your still making the Ulu's would still love to buy one from you are you still making them?
Send me a pic on FB Adam. I'd love to see them.
Hi Dave, I just ran into your & Brook's channels, and I have to tell you they are great channels. I'm having a ball going back over
all of your past videos.
Thanks pnpbec. I'm sorry about your foot but , I'm glad you found our channels! Where at in Michigan are you?
I'm originally from Mesick, Mi. Now in Cadillac. Born & raised in Wexford county. Not too far from your winter home. I've always wanted to visit Alaska. Hopefully, someday. Hopefully I will see you around here. If I do, I will try not to bug you, but I will say "Hi". Thanks again for sharing. Great Ulu making video!
Oh, by the way my name is Paul.
I'm in Cadillac all the time. If you see a black Escort wagon with AK plates make sure you flag me down and say hi!
I'll keep an eye out, thanks, Paul

Great video Dave!!!! I'm a sucker for Knife videos, LoL! I just got a Kabar Turok and I'm really digging it at the moment! Cheers!
Hey T.J. I'll check that knife out.
Thanks!
Thats a funny bit! ......."it tis but a flesh wound".
Great choices man
Thanks Steve.
U guys planning on coming anywhere near Florida? Classes and such!
Classes ............maybe.....Florida, probably not. Ive never been down that way.
Who made your sheath for the Condor Hudson Bay knife?
Condor did. It came with the knife
I was wondering if the LT made the cut or not, good to see it's growing on you more and more!
I'm a cheap dude who buys his gear from flee markets and garage sales......so a $200+ knife is a bit out of the norm for me......but it IS a great knife and I like it more all the time.
Great review!
Thanks UTCS!
Another great video and admire the Old Hickory / Forge Craft which I've been carrying for 55 years . An Ulu is awesome and I wonder if you have made one from the top of a coffee can or other heavy duty tin can .
Thanks for this video .
Ive never made an Ulu from coffee can. I use Old saws.
THX & ATB
Nice picks I did this one
thanks.
You Love the scandy file jejeje, good vídeo y channel
Thanks
I want one of those Ulus! They are better than your average tourist ulus, which are just about all you can get.
I'll have another batch soon......I have to find vintage handsaws that are beyond repair, and I use that steel.
Man, You've got a Basket full of Knives🔪 I'd like to get an Knife Blank and make my own also. I have made a knife out of an old Flat Car Spring before, but I'm getting to old for that much work anymore👴
The Woodlaw blanc was around $15 and it was a fun little project. They offer a couple more blancks too....
Dude, you should start busting out those ULU's. After watching your wife's video a few days (weeks maybe) ago I was looking to order one off of Amazon but was perplexed because they were either super cheap or not. Lemme know when you start making them again because I would love to order one.
I'LL let everyone here know when I have some made. Thanks!
LOL
Some good looking knifes there Dave I’d like to put my name in hat for one when you get em made
I should have a few made in a few weeks. Thanks LT.
Great assortment of knives! I'm surprised non of those nice old folding knives you have made it to the top 5.
I carry the old one I fixed up in a video...but I didn't really think of it in the same way.
Folding knives and fixed blades are two different tools. They don't necessarily belong in the same top 5 video :-)
Right!
I'm in the market for a good knife. Where can I find the Condor brand?
I hav links in the description if you want to find one of these on Amazon.
Thank you.
I really need a better knife! Especially now that china isn’t shipping here! Lol Honestly I’ve only ever heard of Case, Gerber, and Swiss I think? I never really figured out how to or where to buy a good knife.? It’s nice to be able to feel them in your hand before purchasing.
Oh yeah, you need to like the feel of the handle for sure
Hi Dave just subbed been on Brookes channel a while now and watched a few of yours. Keep up the good work 😁
Thanks Dave.
really nice content
Thanks!
just found your channel. Subbed. Great video. how do I get in line for one of the ulu's?
Good question. I'm rounding up materials for another batch right now, and I'll let everyone know when they are done.
Thanks for answering. Looking forward to it.
Love it! Need to find the time to watch ur wife's recent "Girls Night Out" vid.
Thanks. I'll tell Brooke you're heading over.
Bushradical I'll send Brook ur regards! Gave my wife the you we got from u. She loves it
Ulu...
You forgot one link Dave! LOL! Thanks for saying my name! Oooo.....I HIT THE BELL! Cheers!
It was your challenge.....But I couldn't tell about the Hudson Bay knife at the time. Cheers bro
+Bushradical
Cheers D
What was the first knife?
I'm not sure.....I'll have to watch the video again.
Condor one of the best brands ever got like 8 of them&love’m all...used to be buck&gerber..not eny more
Condor makes a good knife for a fair price for sure.
Mister Ulu is a Alaskan native knife they created decades ago
Dave? I’m still waiting for my ULU. You promised you’d save me one!! Please don’t forget me!!! -Stephen, Ohio
After that first batch I haven't made any more but I have enough materials gathered up to do another run soon and You will be the first guy I tell when they are available.
Bushradical Thank you brother! I was hoping you’d say that. Thank you! -Stephen
Bushradical Thank you Dave. I will be looking for them and buy one!! Thank you brother!! -Stephen
It looks like tomorrow....I haven't got a vid shot yet.
How dare you tease about this mysterious knife!! ;)
another sweet video brosephus maximus!
Jack
Hey Jack! Nice cover of Desperado......but who is this Vaughan guy? LOL
The first ten years or so I was playing my absolute favorite bands in all cover bands.Beatles, Wings, classic rock from 6-s - 70s
That was the last gasp days of live bands in my home town Toronto - pronounced "Tron-Oh" before bars started using disc jockeys to save money.
LOL!
Two guys from "Another Lie" turned up, that's the band people loved and ironically, I had left a band called "White Lie" to join "Venger" which seemed very much like destiny to me! lol
Any long, long story short, those two guys told me there were there to speak to me about leaving Venger to join Another Lie.
So, I joined and my new stage name was John Von Bronzesnake, then John Bronzesnake, and finally Vaughn Bronzesnake, which is an incredibly genius play on "Von" Bronzesnake!! ;()
The End!
Sorry.
nescau radical!
Thanks
Man, the sub count shot up!!! Moving on up!!!
Hey K! The cabin videos I did really did well and thats where things started really going up for me. My small cabin vid has 200k views.....that was one of the very first videos I wanted to do ....I wish I would have made tat video sooner, lol.
Love the knives....I am a collector, have been for almost 50 years, started when I was 10. Yes, I still have that original knife. 👍👍✌
I want an Ulu knife very much badly. Can I send you my info in an email or something so I don’t miss it next time they are available?
I will let everyone know when I get some more done. You can email me @ Bushradical@outlook.com
Some profundity for the algorithm: A knife is meant to be a usable tool that gets used.
Yeah, they have a million uses for sure. Its such a great utility knife. ( east central Alaska)..... Northway, Tok area?
Bushradical Quinhagak
She had been in Eek too.
I looove the Condor Bushlore... I totally agree with you on that one. Good choices my friend.
Ps. My headlights look great now, thanks 😎
Cheers!
Awesome!!!
👍👍🤠🤠
dave you know dads stuff is always better
Right on! I used to "borrow" my dads guns and tools all the time!
A tooth pickin knife!
I'm gettin one!!!
LOL
Challenge excepted. this vid is titled (3 Common Misconceptions About Carrying A Fix Blade)
I go over my favourite knives in this video. th-cam.com/video/Fvdgb--sNhc/w-d-xo.html
No Mora in the top favorites?? What is wrong with bushcrafters/woods people today??
I like mora knives but don't have much history with them.
@@Bushradical No problem, I was being slightly sarcastic. For price with much higher performance, Moras are the best.
They are not Ray Mears Woodlores but all Moras preform just as well yet most Moras are very affordable.
The Moras that work as well or outperform the knives in the video above are the:
- The *Mora Robust* (the amazing bargain bushcraft knife) - $16 USD
- The *Bushcraft Black* or *Bushcraft Orange* - $46 USD
- The Mora *Garberg* stainless or carbon - $76 to $100 USD
Most people use the cheaper Moras ($10 to $25 USD) because they are expendable, they are economical, & how well they work in the field.
In the World & the USA no wise outdoorsman would not have at least one *Mora* in his pack.
Stay frosty on the post 100th Veteran's Day
How about making me one?
Maybe this fall I'll make some more knives
I posted a comment on your wife's channel accidentally calling you "Doug". My apologies.
Say Heah, Nice looking couple, nice to meet you. Dilly Dilly.,,.p
The 'ulu' is an womans knife in eskimo society 🕵️
Ulu I ordered is now my wife's only knife she uses in the kitchen ever lol size was perfect for her hands
Thats Awesome. I'm so glad ou enjoy the ULU!
So Gald you wife likes it! Tell her we said Hi.
Man, I'm sorry you have to deal with that crap.
Cheater :-)

Condor Knives are made in El Salvador....
No thank you. Buy quality, buy American.
You mean like a Harley-Davidson or or a Chrysler PT Cruiser?
Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
