Everytime I see one of these old heavy table mounted vices it brings back so many memories of being at my grandparents and hanging out at the shop with my papaw. I had no idea what these were used for back then, but I probably crushed (or tried to crush) hundreds of pounds of rocks in my childhood with them. My sister and I would also put our hands in them and see who last the longest with it as tight as it would go 😆 that was back in the day when kids spent all day outside and we had to entertain ourselves...good times!

Of course, watching my channel you might have discovered that I'm a self proclaimed turbo-nerd extraordinaire and I just HAD to do the math to see how much duct tape you could actually have for 3 cents. If you care, here it is: A 3M non-generic 60 yard roll of duct tape sells for $4.85 on Amazon. That comes out to approximately .08 cents per yard. 3 feet in a yard would be 36" which would come out to .026 cents per foot. So realistically, you could have gotten a little more than 12" of duct tape for under .03 cents. You were clearly under budget, great work my friend! 👍👍👍
Drop the entire kit in a 20 ga. shell and cover it with a 12 ga. shell. That would make a free case that could hold other stuff too and be water resistant.
Great video and mods Dave. Perhaps you could stick the fero Rod into the ground and use it as a sundial and make that another humorous kit addition 😂👍🏻

I’ve never in my life started a fire with a ferro rod! After watching a video you put out about a Bic lighter I figured that was the better choice. But I haven’t seen a Bic lighter with a whistle and a knife yet!
LOL, the ferro rod is good for deep wilderness travel because it always works no matter the temperature or if its wet etc......but you have to know how to use it and there is more prep involved.
Just a thought here. I think they intended the serrated/toothy end of that blade to be the striker. Also Duct tape is an excellent fire starter. Works great with a Magnesium bar. Put the Magnesium bar shavings on the sticky side of the tape. They won't blow away in windy conditions. Hit that with the fero rod sparks and thing will burn like crazy. Even in wet conditions.
This is a really cool idea. I'm looking forward to these. You could expand the series by following up on the "what could you do with $5 or $10" thought you started with by building up to an actual "kit" using a series of $1 items, then comparing how functional your kit would be at each price point.

If you knew the guy who found it it would be even better of a story....the guy who found it lives off grid and has a pair of flat black Harleys from the 60's he rides up and down the muddy hill on our mountain. His bikes are cobbled together from various models and years....but he is a super mechanic and can keep anything running....He was THE PERFECT guy to find something like that.

The ferro rod actually worked better than I had expected. I've see cheap rods that were actually a piece of aluminum rod with a small sliver of ferro rod embedded in the aluminum. The one you have there looks to be regular rod. Pretty good deal for 97 cents.
I have to say...It was hard to strike with the striker the way it came. The section I turned into a blade ( i believe) was intended to strike the rod. But, it did a horrible job....as for the back of the striker, it was painted and useless. After putting a hard 90 on the back of the striker it worked 100% better. The rod actually throws great sparks.
Awesome video. Instead of putting the duct tape on the edge, you could use the card that came with it along with the duct tape to make a little sheath for the striker. Thanks.
Good idea with the modifications. I dont have a compass or a whistle with mine though. I always carry around a Victorinox Ranger and a cheap little ferro rod. The best part is the toothpick.
Dave, That piece of duct tape could also serve as tinder or a fire extender too! It's flammable!! Maybe add a longer strip on the Firesteel handle for extra grip...
I think you are right the blade looking area was probably intended to be a blade and the grove is probably a sharpening choil and the company didn't put an actual cutting edge on it for liability reasons.
Cool idea of what your doing. Just thinking the metal might of been magnetized and if you were to float it in a cup of water it may point to north? May be it would be to heavy, I have heard of magnetizing a needle and float it on a leaf to find north.
Ive seen it done....But I don't know that I would count on it. I think if you were to venture into country where you actually would "need" a compass......it would be worth every dime to have a good Compass.

Me too! The only thing I felt needed to be changed on this little unit was the striker wasn't much good. Once it was sharpened up, it throws great sparks.
i take one of those 1 buck Firesteels together with my victorinox climber on my Keychain everyday ! the saw spine of the swiss knife strikes very well =) Happy new year !

The metal scrapers are usually high carbon hard hack saw blades. I use them for light weight flint an steel kits. So u actually get two fire starters with it.

That 1" of duct tape will burn quite nicely. Scrape some of the mischmetal off the rod onto the sticky side, then use the rod to ignite it. Gives you a few seconds worth of sustained flame. Very useful with marginal tinder.
Mr Paul Danny is right, the fire steel could be used in shadow stick direction finding, but due to the sun rising and setting at different compass bearing angles as seasons change (Example in May and in January I think one could only get a rough North South direction. Even the moon rising East and setting West rises and sets at different compass bearing as well over the four seasons as well. The North star is probably the best indicator to rely on if it is night and it is not cloudy (To walk Easterly just keep the North star on your left side: to walk Westerly just keep the North star on your right shoulder. Keep the North star in front of you if you wish to walk North) I wouldn't want to walk in forest wilderness at night that I wasn't familiar with though it is to easy to break an ankle or leg in a gully or fall off a rock face in the dark. Most people know that the Sun "rises in the east and sets in the west". However, most people don't realize that is a generalization. Actually, the Sun only rises due east and sets due west on 2 days of the year -- the spring and fall equinoxes! On other days, the Sun rises either north or south of "due east" and sets north or South of due West.

Right on! Its harder all the time to find metal coffee cans! I've been drinking coffee from Costco ( Kirkland coffee) and it comes in a metal can. Lots of uses.
Yep - The "old" tin coffee cans are on the way out . Went on a 3 day outing by horseback / southern Colorado a few days ago . One good friend had a cook set he paid over $80 bucks for . My cook set is tin cans - a Large fork and spoon purchased at Goodwill for 50 cents and heavy duty pie pans - 50 cents apiece . Welding wire and coat hangers for handles . I'm still laughing about the compass. Remember Grasshopper, if you focus on the fire steel it will become a compass made of Chineesium, a very powerful alloy. If you don't know which way to go, any way is good as long as you stay away from the clifftops and water and bears. Your mind is your compass. It will protect you from danger. Just remember, what are my resources, what are my options. If you have to deliver a baby in the wild you can use the knife to do surgery and cut the cord and the duck tape as a bandage. Need more duck tape.

Yes, zero dollar survival kits they are absolutely possible :) One could flake any hard stones flint being best for making stone knives, and hand-axes, adzes, and scrapers, like the Paleo Indians and Late-Archaic Indians did. Fire lighting could be done by flint on pyrite or flint on any iron bearing ores, or by wooden friction bow drill set.( I think successful survival using the zero dollar survival kit will disclose that the human brain is the best survival tool ) I really hope none of us have to ever use the zero dollar survival kit.
They came close to it with the TV series Naked And Afraid but imagine (with clothing of course) sending people out with nothing zero zilch-? I think that would separate the "real survivalists" from the "novice survivalists" I would fall under "novice-survivalist" since I only do over-night camping anyway.
after you sharpened the blade use it to cut the clear plastic into one thin long strip by cutting it in a circle, the cardboard portion can be used to fan the fire. LOL waste nothing

I hiked 10 miles across that country and I was rarely anywhere where I could see over 20 feet....Brooke and I both grew up in Michigan where bow hunting is HUGE. We're both pretty good shots with a bow...why didn't we bring a bow? One word.....Valdez! For years we've fished Valdez for salmon. Valdez is similar to Vancouver island in that it is the thickest country you can find. Valdez if full of bears too....but in the woods your field of vision is less than 20'. I know a couple people have seen bears while they were out there, but I would not count on seeing one. The country is way too thick. We never considered taking a bow, because no one with a bow has had ANY LUCK AT ALL.....and we know what the country was going to be like ( from fishing in Valdez AK) .....having spent 49 days out there and never seeing one glimpse of a bear, I don't regret my decision not to bring a bow. At all.
Now Gary...here his my question. I'm asking you this question but I could really ask it to any one of a thousand people who would insist on taking a bow...........why do people still think it's a good idea to take a bow when its done nobody any good yet? thats the question. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be rude about this, I'm just trying to be realistic.....its not a great place to hunt. Why do people insist it would be different the next time around?
Edward Kowalski I know that sounds crazy but there are people on utube that have done it. I have taken a bear with a bow and I now make my own bows ,but in all honesty I'm not very good at it but I go every fall and give it my best shot . All of our ancestors at one time have done this or we wouldn't be here. I hunt water holes in the mountains and the trails that lead to them . I've gotten pretty good at finding them but I usually lose my cool and they escape for one reason or another. I'm 68 years old and I still get a rush out of doing this . I usually go by myself but my wife goes with me some. She has faced down cancer twice and says that she's not afraid of bears because she has already faced down the scariest thing on the planet. I usually use a spears for a backup but last year I had shoulder problems and just used my spears. I usually keep 3 with me 8n case something goes bad . I'll give you an invite to go with me this fall if this gets you excited. I hunt in the mountains in west Arkansas close to the Oklahoma line.

Thats kind of the idea. I'm a little torn as to what to add next.....I have a few ideas.

He was good at dumpster diving! How can it be that a motorcycle could be in pieces and trashed? Brilliant people are resourceful.

Victornox makes good quality knives.
Duck tape is also good to help increase the fire starting. It burns good.

That 1" of duct tape will burn quite nicely. Scrape some of the mischmetal off the rod onto the sticky side, then use the rod to ignite it. Gives you a few seconds worth of sustained flame. Very useful with marginal tinder.

Mr Paul Danny is right, the fire steel could be used in shadow stick direction finding, but due to the sun rising and setting at different compass bearing angles as seasons change (Example in May and in January I think one could only get a rough North South direction. Even the moon rising East and setting West rises and sets at different compass bearing as well over the four seasons as well. The North star is probably the best indicator to rely on if it is night and it is not cloudy (To walk Easterly just keep the North star on your left side: to walk Westerly just keep the North star on your right shoulder. Keep the North star in front of you if you wish to walk North) I wouldn't want to walk in forest wilderness at night that I wasn't familiar with though it is to easy to break an ankle or leg in a gully or fall off a rock face in the dark. Most people know that the Sun "rises in the east and sets in the west". However, most people don't realize that is a generalization. Actually, the Sun only rises due east and sets due west on 2 days of the year -- the spring and fall equinoxes! On other days, the Sun rises either north or south of "due east" and sets north or South of due West.
Maybe I can find a real compass for an extra dollar.

I think that thing may work as a compass if you point it north. Then, you know where north is and can figure the rest.

Right on! Its harder all the time to find metal coffee cans! I've been drinking coffee from Costco ( Kirkland coffee) and it comes in a metal can. Lots of uses.
Yep - The "old" tin coffee cans are on the way out . Went on a 3 day outing by horseback / southern Colorado a few days ago . One good friend had a cook set he paid over $80 bucks for . My cook set is tin cans - a Large fork and spoon purchased at Goodwill for 50 cents and heavy duty pie pans - 50 cents apiece . Welding wire and coat hangers for handles .
I quote my friend - "I'm tossing this s (expletive ) t that doesn't work and going to Goodwill " .

I'm still laughing about the compass. Remember Grasshopper, if you focus on the fire steel it will become a compass made of Chineesium, a very powerful alloy. If you don't know which way to go, any way is good as long as you stay away from the clifftops and water and bears. Your mind is your compass. It will protect you from danger. Just remember, what are my resources, what are my options. If you have to deliver a baby in the wild you can use the knife to do surgery and cut the cord and the duck tape as a bandage. Need more duck tape.

Yes, zero dollar survival kits they are absolutely possible :) One could flake any hard stones flint being best for making stone knives, and hand-axes, adzes, and scrapers, like the Paleo Indians and Late-Archaic Indians did. Fire lighting could be done by flint on pyrite or flint on any iron bearing ores, or by wooden friction bow drill set.( I think successful survival using the zero dollar survival kit will disclose that the human brain is the best survival tool ) I really hope none of us have to ever use the zero dollar survival kit.

They came close to it with the TV series Naked And Afraid but imagine (with clothing of course) sending people out with nothing zero zilch-? I think that would separate the "real survivalists" from the "novice survivalists" I would fall under "novice-survivalist" since I only do over-night camping anyway.

I hiked 10 miles across that country and I was rarely anywhere where I could see over 20 feet....Brooke and I both grew up in Michigan where bow hunting is HUGE. We're both pretty good shots with a bow...why didn't we bring a bow? One word.....Valdez!
For years we've fished Valdez for salmon. Valdez is similar to Vancouver island in that it is the thickest country you can find. Valdez if full of bears too....but in the woods your field of vision is less than 20'.
I know a couple people have seen bears while they were out there, but I would not count on seeing one. The country is way too thick.
We never considered taking a bow, because no one with a bow has had ANY LUCK AT ALL.....and we know what the country was going to be like ( from fishing in Valdez AK) .....having spent 49 days out there and never seeing one glimpse of a bear, I don't regret my decision not to bring a bow. At all.
Now Gary...here his my question. I'm asking you this question but I could really ask it to any one of a thousand people who would insist on taking a bow...........why do people still think it's a good idea to take a bow when its done nobody any good yet? thats the question.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be rude about this, I'm just trying to be realistic.....its not a great place to hunt. Why do people insist it would be different the next time around?

Edward Kowalski I know that sounds crazy but there are people on utube that have done it. I have taken a bear with a bow and I now make my own bows ,but in all honesty I'm not very good at it but I go every fall and give it my best shot . All of our ancestors at one time have done this or we wouldn't be here. I hunt water holes in the mountains and the trails that lead to them . I've gotten pretty good at finding them but I usually lose my cool and they escape for one reason or another. I'm 68 years old and I still get a rush out of doing this . I usually go by myself but my wife goes with me some. She has faced down cancer twice and says that she's not afraid of bears because she has already faced down the scariest thing on the planet. I usually use a spears for a backup but last year I had shoulder problems and just used my spears. I usually keep 3 with me 8n case something goes bad . I'll give you an invite to go with me this fall if this gets you excited. I hunt in the mountains in west Arkansas close to the Oklahoma line.
