The battle between Gaia and Baki was mainly mentally. This isn't the full fight (or at least not in the manga). There it is shown that Gaia has multiple personality disorder and when he was about to get executed in a war he got some ability to the max that allowed him to sort of "force" away the assaults of enemies. So in that moment hundreds of rifles missed their shot and he was "reborn" as someone new (if I remember correctly). On top of that he was scolding Baki about how he, at the age of 13 too, was pushing his body with exhausting exercises that gave Baki all those scars. Meaning Baki doesn't love his own body. Which allows Gaia to have full control over wethet or not Baki can hit him All of that happened before the physical fight started.
Gaia strength comes from his own experience and psychological battle. Ironically, Baki experience and the hatred of his father then was what helped him
Baki was such a great anime back then, not too much supernatural power and event😂, but now they can exceed speed of light but still managed to be attacked by anybody😂

The grappler Baki anime makes so much more sense than the netflix series with people surviving being hit by dumbells and having their throat slashed among other things...
Grappler Baki gets thrown out of a window of a really high building and catches wires to climb back up. He gets lots of really important nerves cut in the first few episodes and is just fine a week or two later. All Baki series are unrealistic. Though I do admit the newer ones are even more unbelievable
