I started a "Paula Prayer-Only" challenge in EarthBound. Here's how it's going.

- A simple challenge in which Paula can only use the Pray command in battle. If she dies, you must stop whatever you're doing and revive her ASAP. I also did the "T-Rex's Bat Challenge" as Jeff, which ended up making things harder since Ness keeps one-shotting the other party members when Paula's prayers make him feel strange!
For the parts when Paula isn't in the party, I'm just rushing through the normal gameplay without grinding more than necessary. - เกม

Ah, so effectively the joys of a Metronome only run in Pokémon... well at least Jeff got revived along with all the enemies.
Jeff was only dead because Paula made Ness feel strange, who then proceeded to one-shot Jeff... heh.
This playthrough has been hilarious, I've decided I'm going to try doing it with a randomizer next!

Blew my mind when I first saw it happen too. One of those rare interactions in this game that you only get via Pray, or a confused party member using a revival PSI/item. Few old-school RPGs actually have enemy revival mechanics, it's neat to see.

The pause at the end of the recording 🤣 I love screen recordings on the switch for this reason, because at the end of every crazy clip you can see the person just sit there and know that their face was like 🗿with their hands in their lap

I never used the pray ability because of this. Like ever. That made it blow my mind even more when I learned you had to pray to beat the game.
That's what makes this such a fun and chaotic challenge, lol!
This actually sounds like a very interesting and RNG heavy challenge, I'd love to see a full video about it!

Clearly I never used this function enough outside of the final battle; I had NO idea that was even possible
Same. It's too easy to use it once or twice, have it backfire slightly (or just kill you in some inelegant way) and never touch it again. Paula works better as a nuclear missile than a saint.
@@KnownAsKenjiyeah that was definitely intentional. They wanted the player to stop bothering with it eventually so that it being useful at the end has more impact. You're supposed to be feeling extremely desperate and willing to use anything you have during the final fight with giygas

Yeah, that can happen, too. XD It's just PSI Flash, so getting the Night Pendant for immunity is nice... Flashing your own party is the most common annoyance when doing this

Huh, that's interesting the battle system was programmed to allow enemies to be revived... I would assume in most RPGs when an enemy dies it's completely gone from memory. Unless EB remembers the original enemy formation and revives based on that...

Some late game enemies can revive other enemies. I know enemies can be revived in Dragon Quest games too.

Enemy reviving??? It's 2024 and this is the first time I've seen this in Earthbound!
It's very rare, especially without using Pray all the time! The rainbow light is among the rarest random outcomes you can get from it.
Currently feeling very jealous of all the people here who didn't know you could revive enemies. I learned the hard way 😅
During my first playthrough of the game, I had never played an RPG before, so I had no idea what I was doing. I'd use Paula's "Pray" VERY frequently as a last resort when I felt like I was going to lose a fight. Mostly, it just gave my party a little healing, or made everyone cry or feel strange. A few times (maybe 2-3 times at most), it revived the enemy's reinforcements.
Actually, my habit of using "Pray" out of desperation led me to accidentally discovering that's how you beat the game. I went in spoiler-free and lost everyone in my party except Paula, whose HP was relatively low, and she had no PP left. I prayed because there was nothing else I could do... and my mind was blown 😂
Nice, haha. I think it might've been intended as a desperation move since nothing necessarily tells you to pray during Giygas. It *can* get you out of rough situations, but obviously, they couldn't make it too useful or it'd be busted... So we ended up with "PSI Flash yourself" simulator. 😂
I've been wanting to do a Praythrough of EarthBound for a while. This is making me reconsider.
You mean a re-play? I'd recommend the Mother 2 Deluxe Edition ROMhack if you're looking for a fresh challenge with new stuff that doesn't change the story. I'm normally pretty anti-mods for games, but I found it quite refreshing and interesting. Nice stuff like seasonings not totally sucking, and Jeff's gadgets not taking up inventory space, but it's also made harder in many ways including enemies having more abilities and better AI, so don't expect an easy time.

Paula has so little hp, this challenge is more "hope she doesnt get one shot" then pray when she finally decides to not die after 2 hits.
Ah, so basically the vanilla game, then, with slightly more hazards.
Luckily, most of the prayer effects are minimal heals for the whole party. A lot of the time she saves people from mortal damage so I don't need to rush to hit Lifeup. The worst parts are dealing with making your entire party cry/feel strange and not having access to attack PSI like Freeze for most of the game
I used pray a lot and even then, i never seen this happen lol

THIS is why I never make Paula pray unless I _have_ to, like in the final battle against Giygas when he's at his final form.
Other than that, I _never_ make Paula pray. I've learned my lesson.
THAT IS WHY YOU SHOULD ONLY USE PRAYERS AT THE GIYGAS BATTLE!!! Just saying!

The rest of the party can do anything (Paula's only damage-dealer is suuuuper rare), but a prayer every turn causes a ton of chaos lol
Oh no that’s somehow even worse. Imagine everyone gets confused during that turn, and you put up a PK star storm, and poo wipes your entire crew (happened to me before).

Lol! One of the rules was that if Paula died, I have to drop what I'm doing and revive her ASAP. At this point in the game I didn't have any PSI that could do that...

what if there was one situation where it is completely impossible to revive paula? either it would be not enough PP, no more items to revive, and/or the nearest hospital/hotel is far away?
No choice but to trek all the way back or try to death warp! Being forced to keep her alive is part of the insanity that makes this challenge fun 😆

I finished it! Currently editing the full challenge into a video, but it's going to take a while. A lot of voiceover to record and footage to sift through!

HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THIS MANY SLIMES

This dungeon particularly sucks for this challenge because the slimes barely take any damage from bashes. Normally, you'd spam PK Freeze or the like to beat them, but of course Paula isn't allowed to do that. XD So the only alternative is Ness with Rockin'. He ran out of PP in that fight ages ago, and the slimes just slowly built up by calling for help. Add on Paula having a good chance to essentially PK Flash the entire field, and everyone was constantly crying and/or confused (Prior to this clip, a feeling strange Ness killed Jeff in one hit with a crit). I was hoping that Paula would roll the random chance to restore some PP so I could let Ness use Rockin' again, but... This instead.
