When YE says- “they playing soccer in my backyard / I think I see Messi”
I always thought that was reference to YE living in the Mercedes Benz stadium while recording Donda.
I’m pretty sure Ye would actually walk around games in the stadium while he was living there during the Donda recording.
So I always thought that line was Ye flexing - saying his backyard is in the Mercedes Benz stadium.
Ye just steps out to his backyard and Messi is just out there kicking the ball around, haha

    AVAA!
I'm glad you made this video, because I've also been thinking a lot this week about what it means that Carnival has been the biggest song in the country for a month now (more daily streams a month after release than any song in at least a year).
While I agree the chorus chant is undoubtedly the main reason for its success, I wanted to posit another framework that could be helpful for explaining this moment.
I'd summarize it this way: Carnival is the "response song" to Boys a Liar by PinkPantheress and Ice Spice. Or to "Flowers." Or to "Vampire." Or to "Paint the Town Red."
Almost all culturally significant (to youth culture, at least) pop songs of last year were made by women, and had a distinct attitude and thematic throughline of maintaining a distinct empowering feminine identity in spite of the behavior of men. "I said what I said," "The boy's a liar," "I can love me better than you can,” etc.
It’s been a while since there’s been a “guy’s anthem” rising to the top - a song made by guys, for guys essentially. Clearly with the lyrics of the chant of Carnival about a woman’s skill going down on a guy, it reduces women back to the subordinate position, framed as some sort of victory (“I done did the impossible”).
In an era where where backlash songs have risen just as high as mainstream pop (“Rich Men North of Richmond,” “Try That in a Small Town”), it makes sense that Kanye holds the banner of the biggest “backlash” song this year, given his recent bigotry and not-so-recent lyrical focus on degrading women to satiate his ego.
And I suspect the growing cultural/ideological discrepancies between Gen Z men and women showing up in survey data (women becoming much more liberal than men) probably has something to do with the dynamic of all of this as well. Something to keep an eye out for as we see where pop culture and music is headed.

Ngl this song is making me think that "she" is about his fans now, and that they are riding his d like a Carnival, which is what i'm doing right now by adding my deeper interpretation of what seems to be an incredibly vulgar song that could mean nothing else, just like MBDTF had its symbolism whole of a woman being about his fans...

    • @tocide
      @tocide 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I've been thinking about the lyrics. My interpretation of it is about "She" being about the fans, and he is referring them for "Riding that like a Carnival", the same way i'm trying to make this song look more deeper than what it might actually be, the same way MBDTF had a woman symbolized as his audience. The fact that the lack of analysis/interpretation of this project and after seeing Fantano and all the receptions show how much of a controversy he is now compared to his Yeezus part of controversy, this one is tied more tied with his reality compared to artistic goal of Yeezus.

I clicked on this video out of curiosity because I didn't recognize the song, and I'm glad I let curiosity get the better of me. Great analysis of a cultural moment that feels pretty significant and that I had no idea was happening. Vultures 1 having this big of a hit is extremely shocking to learn for me. I was expecting the continued decline in Ye's charting power following Donda, so I guess I'll have to re-evaluate that stance. Then you blew my American mind with the football chant topic and how ideological it gets in the stadium. Learned a lot about how little I know in just 23 mins, time well spent thank you.

The Yeezus comparisons are always super interesting to me. Your comparisons are spot on when you say "He went from making a song called Black Skinhead and playing around with his imagery to being a black guy who puts skin heads on the biggest song in the world" I hear people saying this album is much like Yeezus. Afterall, in comparison to all other Kanye records, they are both the most vulgar, sexual, violent, controversial, and political. But I feel like they could not be any more different. Yeezus works so incredibly well becasue Kanye worked more as an anti hero, and we want to see him to succeed despite his controversies and we can see his frustration that hes experiencing with the fashion industry, the music industry, and the world as a whole. I cannot say the same anymore. When Yeezus was released, Kanye had finally regained respect in the music industry after the Taylor Swift incident, and dropping a vulgar abrasive record was the most surprising thing he couldve done, but releasing an album like that now just seems very predictable for him to do. Hes no longer someone I am rooting for, and the music is different because of it. People are saying these albums are similar but in my opinion they could not be any more different and Carnival is a perfect example of how.

The difference is during Yeezus, Ye was pretending to be the Anti Hero. With Vultures, Ye is finally independent and has truly become the anti hero. Like Batman, the hero we need but don’t want. Remember during the New Slaves video all the imagery he was putting out how he is “Not for Sale” well what he meant by that is what happen when he went on his rant in Sacramento, how he’s not selling his soul to push the elites agenda he is going to stay true to himself.
So Vultures going #1 as an independent album with Carnival being his first #1 single in a long time, Ye has finally peaked in what his goal has been this whole time, just wait til he got his money right, then you can’t tell him nothing, right?

AVAA and another on-point analysis by you here! (Your reading of Ye's work is pretty much unparalleled on TH-cam.)
I agree that focusing on the group chant is the key to understanding the song's popularity. Obviously, another dimension to analyze is the string of listening parties recently and how this song has exploded in those contexts. The only thing that I would really add to your analysis is that the thrill of "being together" can co-exist with fascism - the thrill of losing oneself in the mass of people, etc.

I partially agree with you in this one.
I think Kanye did know what he was doing, and this track is designed to indeed bring the public to a similar state as in a football (soccer) match.
If you travel to south america and attend a live show of an international artist you will experience this same euphoric state that is inherited by the most popular sport in the region-> Football. There, there's no need of a song like Carnival. Many (and sometimes even not intended) songs generate this same feeling of togetherness. But this is native, brought up by the public itself and motivated by the artist fandom. Just like in a football match.
I think Kanye is just placing the seed of this "resource" to be used in live performances. Very common in some places, but new and disruptive in other countries and audiences. And for me this feels... cheap.
Also using that many collaborations of other artists, in my opinion, shows the high stakes intended for the song.

AVAA it's 2am so I found your channel yesterday. Your insightfulness towards hip hop and music in general gives me a perspective in music that I have not been able to hear yet. I was wondering what your thoughts on certain soundtracks are across other mediums and their connections to said mediums as well as their own standing as a singular art piece. Like Ennio Morricone's Ecstasy with and without the context of it's scene. I would be interested in your opinions of video game soundtracks without the context of the games. You have very iconic composers associated with the medium like Koji Kondo and Martin O'Donnell. But as a music listener who has gone back and forth between concept albums, movie scores, and video game scores; I often feel underwhelmed by the state of video game soundtracks through a mix of its reliance of nostalgia in certain areas and neglect of external influence towards other musical movements. Some whitey jazz conductor said that video game soundtracks were the next great American songbook and I wanted to grab his nuts so hard that his eyes turned purely white. It's a very dense article of music the more I end up talking about it. But I'd probably consider undertale, it's well made, well composed, dynamic, lots of range for one person to make, clearly lots of talent put into it. But the reception to the soundtrack feels cultish, I don't know anyone who is new into undertale, but no one leaves the comfort of the soundtrack. I am unfortunately too biased for this subject, but I would recommend it.

Idk if anyone will read this but I wrote an analysis of the album because I think it’s misunderstood and actually is a concept album..
Keep in mind the first single Ye says “got pregnant in the 3 some so whose baby is it?” And he f’d Scooters bish, Scooter Braun known for screwing artist on their masters etc
Track 1 choir sing “ I hope he’s big and bright and strong”
Track 4 ..”Once again the clouds are gatherin to release what they held in”
Clouds are metaphor for dark thoughts . Rain is a metaphor for the manifestation of those dark thoughts troubles and pain.
Track 5- Ty sings- heart was broken , I am frozen. Ye prays for a beautifulbigtittybuttnakedwoman to fall out the sky not rain.. but that is just his sex addiction talking. Kanye is a self admitted sex addict and he has said before sex addiction comes from trying to cover up pain ( all addictions are)
Track 6- you look like a piece of Hallelujah. (He manifested the woman to fall out the sky)
    Tracks 6-8. And 10-12
Are Ye living a cold loveless life of just sex and transactional relationships with women lyrically. He’s in Yeezus mode which is why he includes the Mike Tyson interlude about how Ye has mental issues (I’m a God) ends track 6
Track 12 - (i’m the new Jesus bish)
I’m a God famous track from Yeezus an album about Ye being a sex addict similar to tracks 6-12 on Vultures.
In the middle of the those tracks is track 9 Burn - her love is dangerous.
Ye- who’s not entertained by my pain who ain’t cash a check off my name.
I burned 8 billion to take off my chains.
Chains in hip hop are called- ICE
What happens when the clouds release rain and the environment is cold? It turns to ICE.
Track 13 after Carnival is Beg Forgiveness . Ye realizes he’s gone too far with the lifestyle he’s been in track 6-12 in Yeezus mode- What if I wake and i can’t feel my heartbeat..Ye’s verse says “don’t let your moment pass you by” , “100% covered in ICE” - Back to me Ty sings this is more than just a moment.. I am FROZEN
Track 14- Good don’t die - Ye sings got my heart on ICE don’t die.
Back to how this is set up Track 2.
Ye raps - slow down you on your way to an overdose- it’s about his addiction
    - caused by pain it’s about the divorce with Kim- seeing her with other men.
Ever since I lost my mom you were like my foster mom-
“You already know I’m impulsive and another baby is my end goal” -
. If you’re impulsive and want to make babies that means sex addiction.. uncontrolled sex not for love. Also says are you ready for the Venmo, which in context implies he’s going to be sending money to women in exchange for sex..
Track 3 - Ye sings “Roxanne” in a desperate voice yearning for love.. but for her it’s just a job ain’t that a shame- she’s just here to get PAID.
And Ye is just shooting Billy blanks and can’t get any one pregnant for his end goal of a baby therefore he’s just making money to provide material things for the woman he’s with and get laid- feed his sex addiction.
Also note the silly voice he raps with is the same voice he used in the Alex Jones interview (Net and Yahoo) his last interview before getting “cancelled”
Track 4 Talking features North for a reason.
There’s 2 songs made about North- Violent Crimes - a song about how Ye imagines her growing up and being surrounded by savages and monsters who use her for sex - the way Ye used to treat women .
Also Only One- a song about Ye’s mom singing to him and North-
Hello Mari , how ya doin? I think the storm ran out of rain the clouds are movin.
Track 5-Yeezy how ya doin huh?
Ty sings - Once again the cloud the clouds are gathering to release what they held in - and his verse same theme as Violent Crimes , Ty afraid his daughter grows up living the lifestyle he used to live.
    Now the bookends
    The Album Cover
    Track 1 STARS
    Track 13 Problematic
    Track 14 KING
The album is actually using Ye’s struggles with sex addiction as a metaphor for the being cancelled , the culture , the industry , and comparing himself to problematic figures in the industry ( Stars) cancelled for dehumanizing acts towards women .
R Kelly, Bill Cosby, P Diddy, Chris Brown, Columbine shooters were incels who were mad they couldn’t get girls.. Ye’s other addiction or impulse control problem is his inability to bite his tongue. Which is the cause of his cancellation and he has said that and his *orn addiction led to his divorce.. Carnival- they served us the *orn since the day we was born.
Ye for a long time has been connecting the dots that the industry uses the black entertainers like how the black entertainers who live a problematic lifestyle use women. It’s a transactional relationship with no love . The industry makes money of the lyrics of rappers who rap about killing each other , doing drugs , drinking and treating women like objects.
It leads to fatherless homes, single mothers who can’t provide for their kids and be around them all the time , so then the kids in the hood often are looking for a sense of family and male role models through gangs and then they end up in Jail. Or seeing the rappers who make bad choices as examples because they are perceived as cool because they make money and get all the women.
It all revolves around money- women are naturally attracted to men with money because it provides for the children, but the men who have the money use their money for power over women often are not there for the children and are just using them for sex because of their own pain..
The industry above all who capitalize off of the artist usually are generational wealth , they have families , and they are just using the system making money off of black peoples pain because they are greedy.
So who are the VULTURES- the men using the women for sex? The women using the rappers for money? The rappers who rap about gang violence and objectifying women because it makes them money?
Or is it the system of greed?
That’s why Ye ripped up the contracts and burned 8 billion by calling out the system and the fact he’s still King shows he outsmarted the system by using it to be #1 again. Vultures 1 is just step one of 3 .
I just F’d the world raw she needs a morning after.PROBLEMATIC

I just copy and paste that from myself by the way, .. I didn’t realize the Soccer fan history and the choir ties to Nazis.. but that still fits in my interpretation.. and want to be clear , these aren’t my views necessarily just how I interpret based on Ye’s interviews in 2022.
Also I noticed the song that was supposed to be the first track Everybody, Ye’s verse is “when I talk to the shrink you better not blink”
A verse talking from the perspective of his sex addiction, and the front cover of the album is reminiscent of the cover in The Life of Pablo , a model butt facing you, the lyrics most reminiscent of Father Stretch My Hands
And ok you the King , Burger King. And the album ends on the song King.
Which I think is showing self awareness.

I also feel like the novelty and rawness of that choir (the crowd) might have satisfied people since today’s music (or actually everything) is so predictable and in line and so this chant felt “refreshing”… it’s also European, which is lesser represented on such a grand scale. But also there’s this (a bit scary sounding but nevertheless) grandiose feeling of unity that hits different in these times

AVAA! I was already impressed by your original thesis about why we crave songs showcasing unity, but then you blew my mind with the research and analysis of the chant itself. Only thing though- at the end I find it pretty hard to see this as "brilliant" or "ambiguous", because it seems to me to be pretty unambiguously horrible. It's one thing to make a tweet about Jews, it's another thing to incorporate very real fascism and violence into your art. Idk if I'm coming across, but somehow this struck me as being maybe the worst thing Ye has done in this fairly long spiral. (not saying that you endorse him of course, obviously you don't. Just sharing thoughts)
Also, I've been subscribed for a while now, but scrolling through the comments on your recent Ye videos it seems like there's a lot more dismissive, aggressive fanboy comments towards people who are trying to voice legit concern or even just share their responses. Your Ye videos are great, but I do wonder if they're garnering a certain type of audience
ALSO ALSO: I dont know if you're aware, but Kim Gordon (yes, from Sonic Youth) just released maybe the best trap album of the year. So definitely check that out!!

You could never do too much Ye content, I doubt most fans here would get agitated
You have given me the best interpretation of his work I have ever discovered.
Ye is gonna be in the history books, whether he be mentioned favorably or not, and he is one of the handful of artists that have and will define this era in history
I feel like it’s alright to make him a frequent point of conversation as long as you criticizing his beliefs and actions fairly
It seems like somehow, after proclaiming to love hitler, deny the holocaust, and the great replacement, Ye is back, and seemingly here to stay, releasing a #1 album, and after fighting for a month on the charts after a botched release, a #1 single. If he makes music, it seems like people are still gonna listen to it.
He will make more mistakes, and these should always be addressed

Ye is using fascist imagery to express his feelings of disillusionment with society, his hatred and his hunger for power
fascist aesthetics have fascinated many artists since the nazis fall. even the name Joy Division is a nazi refrence, and the singer shouted officers’ names in a concert as a statement.
To me it isnt really disturbing, but saddening. fascism is ultimate pain, and artists express pain in their work, this pairing is unfortunately inevitable in our painful, racist and bigoted world

So you both nailed it but lost the view of the forest because of one tree. Yes the song is a hit and about togetherness. But then you jump to the conclusion that he is supporting skin heads, as compared to “including” skin heads. Meaning, what is more together than having Black people and skin heads all on the same song performing together? All these so called skin heads are making Black artists richer by performing on Black artists songs, so it calls into question what type of racists does that? You see how Ye has blurred the lines now?
A real racists doesn’t make rap videos with Black artists, bottom line.

Ye had Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in Studio often to test the "white girl" friendliness of his music
When you see his Listening parties, and when they turn the sound off to let the crowd sing.
Ye is very aware of this importance - he started it with kids choir on Hard Knock Life - and it was all over almost every album - of these choirs
He is great at punch lines - most hit in some way...some hit HUGE - like Jacuzzi....others less so - but there are at least 20 memes you would recognize by a single still foto.
He tries them - some stick - at listening parties - he turned it down on You the King, Burger King - and people love that line....corny as it might be...It is a reason why he has listening parties - he wants to know how his music resonates in different settings, among crowds. Because of his features - his crowd has also stayed young, with zero nostalgic aspects - which is ultra rare for any 46yr old musician.
My son (turned 12 yesterday) loves Travis, Yeat and Carti probably more than any other artists right now - and tries to avoid showing any interest in the Ye catalogue - because I like it enough.....and I catch him doing "go go go's" a lot the last 5 days...must be getting used in TikTok a lot....he has ironically morphed it into "GoGoGoGo - Paw Patrol" just to troll me when I catch him
But it is that Ye knows how to make snippets catchier than "Closer" or "Call Me Maybe", and puts them in stuff....it is what makes "It's your bestie, miss miss westie" so chantable when North does it...
For me, there is some last beat missing in the chant....it almost reaches it in the undulation....that seven nation army thing....that meatloaf thing....but I am apparently a bit wrong - by just how well it is doing.
He wanted the ironman sample - remember where that was used? Think pro wrestling, when Animal and Hawk (Road Warriors) stormed the ring, to end their tag team matches in seconds....That - like the smashing glass of Steve Austin is the spectacle that was the ultimate in being like gladiators in Ye's youth - and probably yours and mine.
Do the Milan Ultras hit that - yes.
Does this have precedent? Yes - Remember when Madonna was culturally ultra-relevant form 1984-1998....Rememebr Attilla Lukacs - with his homo-erotic veneration of skinheads....Same Thing
If you think Soccer has a MULTI-RACIAL fan base - what are you smoking? The people watching in everywhere in Europe that is not England are homogenous as anything
National soccer teams that are multi-racial - Holland, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Austria and now and then there is a white guy on the french team.
Italy has only had very few black players in its history, and like Argentina, can win with an all white squad. Spain is all white, Croatia and Eastern Europe are white - I hate to think what Morrocons thought when they were being celebrated as "african" by the foreign press. The active racism of soccer fans across Europe is unabated...they make monkey noises and throw bananas on the field.

Can I just point out the absolute batshxt insanity it is to call a Black guy from from Southside Chicago who once on National TV said the sitting president George Bush did not like Black people in response to the way the government handled Katrina, to call that guy a white supramacist is beyond absurd. In fact I don’t even believe people even truly believe that because there is no way the mental gymnastics you would have to do to make that make sense is beyond comprehension. Calling him that is just another label of hate to place on him as a way to dismiss him from your reality. But the truth is more complex, the truth is Ye is breaking the paradigms and driving people mad.

It's always a surprise how artistically he can be racist.
He's really the most interesting artist in the world, if nothing else. He makes it so easy to dismiss him as a garbage human being. We all know what he has become since mbdtf. A monster. He told us then. Runaway. Do not follow me. I'm a duchebag, an asshole, a scumbag. Runaway fast as you can. So why dont we? Why can you not stop making videos about him, why can i not stop devouring every piece of info about him?
There's no point in even giving him the benefit of the doubt at this point with the things he's said. Not even implied. Said out loud. But then he sells everything on his site for $20 because he promised it years ago?
I also agree with Fantano that the new album is his worst album, not because its bad but it is reusing a lot of his earlier work. I could swear I've heard most of those drums on his earlier albums. Its like the album was perfectly crafted to just make money. "im just here to get paid". He even tells us what he's trying to do. He's independent now, so i guess that's why he wants the money? How does he keep committing career suicide but get bigger in the process?
I really like your videos prof, and i know both you and your audience wants you to stop talking about him. But i dont think you will stop. I dont think you can stop. I think you know that deep down. We should have runaway when he told us to.
