    To get the hang of soft drifting on 200cc I found a good track / kart combo to practice with.
    1) Luigi / Teddy / roller wheels/ paper glider
    2) Track : rainbow road 64 (Trainbow)
    There are two or three turns that you HAVE to soft drift in order to get the UMT.
    I found it a good way to practice because it’s clear as day if you get it, or otherwise your’ll be off or nearly off the track if you don’t.
    Good luck ✌🏻

    Good video. The angle I recommend is not 45 degrees as it’s a common mistake. It may work at 45 but you have a good chance of hitting 46 from the horizontal which will turn off the fast charge. So I tell folks to hold more inside like 30-35 degrees to be sure you are soft drifting and charging fast.

      Thing is I don't even know when I'm soft drifting since I don't look at my controller

      It's something you have to visualize first and then be able to feel. It takes practice!

    The cheat code is to get a gamecube control, calibrate it so the diagonal notch is 44 degrees instead of 45. Then using that diagonal notch is always the widest possible soft-drift angle.

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The widest possible soft drift angle is rarely ever the optimal angle, however. Alignment is still important, even within the soft zone

    At first i never knew what softdrifting was, but then i realized that i was doing it without knowing the name of it HAHAHAHAHHA.

    Does it matter if the control stick is tilted all the way out (such that it hits the gate) vs slightly tilted? In the "Zone" diagram, I'm not sure if the bold circle represents the gate or not. It looks different from the diagram in Vike's drifting guide.

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I took the diagram from Vike, just made a circle outline I believe. I think it doesn't matter as long as it is in the zone. Doesn't need to be all the way out but pretty close it appears.

    very good video!! Could you make some videos dedicated to Strats or advanced techniques on MK8DX, like the demon slide, slides of course, etc? it would be greatly appreciated

    So is soft drifting the same as neutral drifting in terms of drift angle and vehicle speed? The only difference being that you get the higher MT charging rate?

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neutral drifting is directionless. It is fastest because you are not turning. But it is a MT charging dead zone. You'll see neutral drifting on the long turns of the Mario Circuit world record I believe for instance (maybe on 200cc? Idr) They could charge a umt way quicker, but they neutral a bunch to go faster and the turn is so long they get their desired charge without much softing at all

    • @raswartz
      @raswartz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HDRookie Thanks. Here's why I think soft drifting is similar to neutral drifting. Drive in a circle on Paris Promenade while soft drifting. Just hold the MT forever and keep circling. Once you've got that, let go of the joystick so you are now neutral drifting. Continue to hold the MT and keep circling. It looks like the cart will continue on the same circle at the same vehicle speed. If there's any difference, I cannot see it. (Except for the big difference of how quickly you charge your MT.)

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  ปีที่แล้ว

      @raswartz I don't know exactly how to display it, but it will be more noticeable if you race a ghost.
      It is the same concept as steering vs just driving straight (without drifting).

    So instead of wiggling left and right, it'd be much more efficient to just slide the stick up and around the rim to have precise control?

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All that matters for charging speed is being in the soft zone as much as possible. However else you need to balance staying on the road will more or less be up to you to determine.

      @@HDRookie makes sense. I do ask though, is having the stick up, but central the same as just having it be released in the middle?

    Does soft drifting also work if you steer in the marked zones in the opposite direction of the turn?

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I can recall, yes, it does. It just isn't super efficient. You’re only going to want to steer opposite of the turn briefly to prevent you from running into walls mainly.

    wait, i don't get it, so in the circle the outer darkgrey tone is the sweetspot where i'm actually soft drifting at.. doesn't this simply mean that as long as i'm just drifting with pure left and pure right input i'm fine?

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Full turns will maximize your charge speed. The problem is that fully turning left or right will force you to run into walls on average, non 180-degree turns.
      The way to combat this is to turn the opposite way when you go right, but that forces you out of the max charge zone temporarily. It's better to just find the best angle to balance alignment with necessary charge time. Going back in forth a bunch also requires you to turn more, which slows you down a bit.

      @801Hellfire 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ok but I feel like you’re not actually explaining the point of a soft drift, here or the vid.
      Isn’t the point to maximize turbo charge will minimizing directional input? e.g. a holding the stick straight to the left while turning left maximizes both the left directional input and the turbo charge but creates a really tight left turn. If instead you hold left and up at about a 45 degree angle / 10:30 clock face, you’re still maximizing that turbo charge (hence the diagram) but not maximizing that left input therefore getting less of a hard left turn while getting the same turbo charge.
      Is that not the entire point of soft drifting? I see a lot of vids / shorts showing the 45 degree angle diagram but no mechanical explanation for why and where we want to be doing this which kind of defeats the point of a guide. Maybe my soft drifting explanation is totally wrong but if so, it just kind of reinforces my point. Mk8d is kind of notorious for not having great technical guides. You could be the guy who makes the great guides and get all the traffic and I can tell you an easy to help do that: Make videos where it shows what you’re inputting on your controller and have accompanying mechanical explanations, dry technical terminology where no assumptions are made.

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@801Hellfire I would like to do that in a perfect world, but it's not something I have high on my priority list right now unforunately. I don't have the ability to record inputs or record my controller, nor am I the best softdrifter, really.
      It is really hard to explain soft drifting thoroughly in the sense that how to do it optimally is going to change on pretty much every turn in the game. The way you should be thinking about it is what you said: turn the least amount possible, while still getting the best MT tier you can get for that turn.
      So the idea of softdrifting and softdrifting optimally are different concepts too. Many might use softdrifting (the angles we covered in a drift) just to try to charge their MTs as fast as possible, just so they can get those miniturbos to begin with. Not everyone is at the level where they're unable to think about turning yet.
      I don't remember everything I said in this video of the top of my head, but I will say I didn't go into it intending to not be thorough. Maybe my explanations didn't fully help everyone, but I have a feeling if I did it again, there would still some who wouldn't get everything. And that's just because our start points / understandings are different to begin with. Some people also learn in different ways, so it is hard to make the definitive guide, in a sense. If this can help some people and I can answer some questions though, I still feel like it is at least a good step.
