Sailor Fountain Pen Nib Comparison

  • How does a Sailor extra-fine nib write in comparison with the medium-fine? How does it write in comparison to a Lamy extra-fine? What exactly does a zoom nib do? How thick is the Sailor Music nib? All of these curiosities are answered in this comparison video that shows all the various Sailor fountain pen nib sizes side-by-side for an apples to apples evaluation. Ink used is Sailor Jentle Blue-Black. Music is Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, S. 244/2, orch. arr. by composer Franz Liszt and performed by the National Military Band.

    Thanks; now it seems my favorite Sailor nib now is Broad. The same way Nike shoes tend to run smaller and slenderer on my feet, Sailor nibs tend to be finer. My Purple Cosmos is a fine nib; it's quite toothy, which is not my preference. The Broad seems to give me the expressiveness I like without being gushy and thick, and I'm sure it will be a smoother writing experience.

    This is an excellent info video. Thank you.
    I use different size nib points for different kinds of writing. My favorite general writing nib is the Japanese B nib. It is vaguely like a wet Western M nib, but it lays a bolder line while being very smooth. I have mostly Danitrio, Platinum and Namiki nibs. I need to try some Sailor nibs, too. This video is good motivation to get going on the Sailor trials.

    • @GoldspotPens
      @GoldspotPens  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes, it might not be the pen or the nib to blame. It might be the ink and paper. Try different inks first. You may find one that has wetter flow for your Lamy nibs. A smoother grade of paper, one that is more fountain pen friendly may also provide better performance over toothy, recycled papers.

    How does the Sailor 1911 21kt nib in med. fine compare to a Parker Duofold Centennial (1990 ver.) in a med. nib. I have looking for a quality daily use pen with a smooth feel and not a wet writer. I like the Sailor Professional Gear in black/gold trim and cannot decide if I should consider a medium or medium fine nib. Some of my Cross mediums lean to the wet side and I am a slow writer with style on the slightly smaller side of med.

    • @GoldspotPens

      Sailor nibs have a toothy feel, especially if you write with a medium-fine or finer. I'd suggest medium or broad.
