This is by far the most thorough review of Sailor nibs I have seen - well done and thank you! When you are writing with the music Nibs you rotated your pen to the paper, probably to write around your camera. If the Music nib is used square on to the paper, which is like the 'default setting' then the vertical lines are thick and the horizontal ones are thin, not the other way round as you describe them. I have also heard it said that if you use this to write music, then the pen is held perpendicular to the paper and rotated 90 degrees, so then it would of course produce thick horizontals and thin verticals. I have both 14k and 21k sailor MS nibs and love them both. Thanks again.
This video is just EPIC! It must have taken an insane amount of time to plan and put this together, but thank you for creating such a helpful resource for Sailor nibs. I hope this puts you even more on the map as a source for Sailor pens!
The approximate line width with the multiliner is super helpful. It’s hard to get a sense of actual line width through a video (with zoom and shooting styles), so it’s nice to have something objective to compare it to. Neat idea! Thanks for the helpful video!
I am pausing at 29:19 to add my voice: THIS VIDEO IS SOOOOO GOOD! Just what I have wanted for a long time. Lots of data along with a relaxing and informative chat. I will be back!!! Thank you!
What a PERFECT video!! I’ve been looking for a thorough comparison of Sailor nibs like that and you nailed it! I love the feel of my Medium 21kt and I am looking forward to getting a B one.
Thank you Daisy and Soraya for the great presentation. It was very informative and your experience and passion was heartfelt. I am happy that Yoseka will be creating this type of "A" content for all of us to learn from 🙏
Thank you for doing this. I learned a ton, going from nothing to now feeling like I have a good basic understanding of these pens. The fact that 10 people gave this a "thumbs down" is beyond comprehension but everyone has their own opinion. Again, thank you!
That is VERY detailed! I love it. I can watch this any time I want to buy a new nib/pen. It's everything I need to know and a bit more. Thank you so much!
Pens are work of beauty in most cases. But the nib determines whether one will enjoy writing with the pen, for regardless of a pens aesthetics one needs enjoy the feel of the nib on paper. A most detailed video and so very informative! I like the Japanese fine and medium nibs most given their line width. Great video and it took a lot of work. Thank you.
Thank you Daisy, Soraya, and the rest of the Yoseka crew for this super informative video! I especially appreciate the comparison with fineliners - I sketch with Sakura Micron pens and am looking to try fountain pens instead, but I couldn’t find ANY other resources online comparing the line weights between fountain pen nib sizes and fineliner sizes. This video is a godsend!
I love watching your line comparison videos! They are the best videos and so comprehensive. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos and the history behind each brand and pen.
0:24 Aloha Ladies! Thank you for your extensive review on 21 karat nibs. I just ordered my first 21 kt gold nib pen, the Sailor Pro Gear in Every Rose Has Its Thorn. I’m so excited!
Wow! Thank you so much for this in-depth video on the difference between Sailor 14K and 21K nib sizes! Plus the specialty nibs! I appreciate this so much!
Thank you so much for this extensive video. I just ordered the lucky charm pro gear slim from you guys with the 14k medium. It will be my first sailor pen and I think you did a great job at preparing me for it! Though it was a really hard choice, the smoothness of the 21k was very tempting, I thought I’d try the classic for my first experience and go from there.
@@monicah7230 so good. It’s still my favorite and I use it all the time. The medium has been fine for me, I think with light pressure I’m still able to get a decently fine line, but I love the sound of the feedback the medium gives me and I’m not sure if a mf would be less. I’d say go for it, it’s such great quality it’ll last forever. My other go to is a twisbi, definitely not the same caliber but it is still really good quality and fun to write with. If you don’t have one yet I highly recommend it.
It's a good brand. The writing feel is very much like a pencil. It's about a 6 on the dry/wet scale. I enjoy writing with mine. The thing that Sailor does so well is making even finer nibs still feel relatively smooth. You can tell looking at this video that even the extra fine nib was somewhat wet. Overall it's a very controlled ink flow and that results in a very controlled writing experience, which I enjoy. I have an F, MF, and M nib. My favorite overall is the Medium, but I enjoy the Medium-fine as well. It's like a European EF, but better. But I will say that if "buttery smoothness" is your target, you probably won't enjoy Sailor. Pleasant feedback is the name of the game with them.
This was super helpful. I really wish I would have seen this before I ordered my first Sailor Fountain Pen. Its a fine nib which is just too thin for me. My next will be the Medium Fine. Thank you!
Thank you for this comprehensive review! I've added a zoom nib to my pen bucket list, and I'd love to get my niece a pen with a music nib because she is studying to become a music teacher - and she has been writing her own music!
Sailor is my second favorite Japanese brand after Pilot so far. This is a very comprehensive and helpful overview. The squiggly lines are "figure eights" btw.
Great video, thanks for being so thorough. I was looking to see what nib i wanted on my first Sailor pen, now i know thanks to you! If i may give you a little feedback, would be good to see a bit more writing - like the quick brown fox (etc) to see how the pen/nib works with all the letters of the alphabet.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m looking forward to getting my first Sailor pen to use with my Manyo ink collection! It’s definitely the 21k medium for me. I’m also going to get a pen with the zoom nib! I love the Manyo line so much, I must have a Sailor pen also! Thanks again!
Great vedio… Your presentation is excellent! I could make my decision in going for the nib I wanted. Thanks Daisy and Soraya… and I’ll continue to look forward for similar treat.
I love this video! I find it is very informative for me. This is a video I have looked for. I am really interested in Sailor 21kt since I watched your video! I am hoping the next video you upload.
Love that you did this, so helpful especially since I stick with fine and MF all the time. Looking forward to one day trying a music nib cause it looks so juicy.
I'm also firmly in the EF to MF camp since I need to switch between English, Chinese and to a lesser extent Japanese in my daily life, but I've been stretching myself. I keep an eye out on good deals for used pens with nibs I don't expect to use everyday. Thankfully there's a very active community where I live. Also I don't mind getting black pens, because black never goes out of style. And I don't mind sending a black pen off to Bokumondoh.
Thank you so much for such an informative and pleasant video! (You Yoseka folks are producing valuable content, and I appreciate the thought and effort that is evident in each video. 💯) This was exactly the information I was looking for this morning. It helped me confirm in my mind that my next pen will be a Sailor 1911 with a Zoom nib! 🤗
Thank you for the nib demonstrations. I am thinking I want a piston-filler Sailor Realo for Christmas this year. It has the 21k nib and I believe I will choose an extra fine.
Thank you for making this video! I was debating on whether or not I should get a medium or a fine nib for the Sailor Pro Gear Realo and this video was very helpful! Is the pen on 16:13 a 1911 or a Pro Gear? Is there a difference between the thickness between the Realo, the Pro Gear, and the 1911?
The Sailor Shikiori Dragon Palace is one of the most beautiful pens out there. The gold shimmer adds dimension to the pen and makes the resin look like either real jade (often used to make dragon figurines in Asia) or flickers of sunlight on seafoam. The fairy tale itself has a great moral, emphasizing kindness. A fisherman saved a turtle's life, and the reward for his kind deed was that the turtle took the fisherman on a trip to see the Dragon Palace, home of the Dragon King/sea god.
An excellent comparison of the two nibs. I chose to buy a Sapporo “White Russian “ and a 1911L a year ago both in medium nibs and love them both., however I lean to the 1911L more for a daily writer due to its larger size. Might even try the “King of Pens” but wouldn’t realize any line difference from the 1911L. I do appreciate the slight feedback when compared to my medium nibbed Pelikan 800 series pens. I cringed as I watched the young lady post the cap on the pro gear! 🙀
This is a very helpful review! I am trying to decide between a 21K Medium Fine versus Medium nib which is tricky. Does the Medium have less feedback than the Medium Fine? I enjoy writing with Pilot Fine nibs and am trying to be close to that in line width. Thanks a lot!
I think the MF could have been a .38 liner. Very interesting comparison, so thanks a lot for that. I much prefer the 21k nib (also because I prefer bigger nibs and larger pens) and this is really good to know!
I find on my local market Medium 14k medium nibs. Are these finer than their european counterparts? I have a pilot metropolitan in medium and i wonder if the lines have the same thickness with the sailor 14k medium nib.
My first gold nib pen was a Sailor Pro Gear Slim in the MF. Mine really doesn’t have any feedback at all….I like it, but it seems to require darker, more pigmented inks to write well. Mostly I just use sailor black or blue black in it. I’ve been thinking of getting the 1911S with a 21k nib…
I just tried some Sailors in a store, and found that the MF in the 14k was ever so slightly _thicker_ than the MF in the 21k. Looks like it might be the case in your demo too...? :)
Thank you so much for this. I have been a bit frustrated with getting Sailor nibs that are way too fine for me when they say M. I am relatively new to Sailor nibs. It is especially good to know that that the 21K M write much thicker than most of your comparisons with the 14K! From your video here I have decided that 21K M is the thinnest Sailor I can cope with. This means 1911 Large and Pro Gear all the way! (As well as zoom and music of course!)
@@Yoseka Yes! I just received my 2021 Pen of the Year (The Cranberry Sparkle), luckily I caught in time that I was ordering the S version (did not know there are two sizes), so quickly changed it to the L solely for the 21K nib! I love it! The zoom is juicy and delicious but a bit unwieldy on an A6 notebook 😅I am definitely on a Sailor nib bender! Thank you again! PS: Just discovered your store. I hope you ship to New Zealand because I spotted a few things there that I rather like 😁
How did the 14k broad nib feel? Im debating between the 14k broad and the 21k medium which seem identical line widths but am wondering if the 14k broad nib is smooth in comparison to the 21k medium
I've got a 1911L in medium and 1911s in broad. The standard is double the width of the large. Very wet. Both extremely smooth. The large is a tad softer despite being a medium nib. It's like writing on a cloud.
Thank you for the detailed and meticulous and detailed comparison. Is there a difference in feedback between the 14K and 21K Fine nib? Is one smoother than the other?
Great review. I am looking at a 1911L stormy seas and still debating MF v Medium. I am use to european medium nibs e.g. Delta, Visconti, Dupont, Pelikan. How do Sailor nibs run in comparison with EU made nibs? Thx.
Hi, just found your channel today, I love it. Sailor nibs are very special. Also, a little joke (in a "Dilbert" way) : - Hi, what is your job, again ? - Drawing lines with pens in a relaxing way for viewers - Is it interesting ? - Yes, a lot ! - Then why did I, your boss, caught you sleeping on your desk ? - My work was effective :)
I have both 14K slim and 21K std versions in M-F. I wouldn't say line thickness is different when no pressure applied, but 21K nib is more interesting. It is noticeable softer, has more feel when writing, and if you push it harder you'll get thicker line. So it provides sort of line variation , which 14K slim version nib doesnt have
Hello, thankyou for such a detailed comparison. I have watched this video like 5 times. I am very confused between PG MF vs PG F 21k. Reason - i own PGS - F 14k which I feel is tad bit drier (running shin Kai) though smooth nonetheless with a gentle feedback. I usually use cheap/copy office paper. Basically I like the line width on pilot ch92 fine (which is wider than PGS fine 14k) but I am looking for feedback and I feel pilot nib react to pressure much more . If anyone/yoseka team read this comment. Suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Anyways, thankyou for putting in efforts for this video!!
The puzzling bit to all of this (very good and useful) video is, the MF and M writing with the 14kt nib look equally sized. Maybe the weight you applied changed somehow, or maybe it's like the EF and F, they just make them equal and give them 2 names :)).
I've been looking into getting a Pro Gear lately, but I don't like to go too thin with my nibs. I heard that Sailor tends to run thinner than Pilot, do you know how the Sailor 21K MF compares to a Pilot 14k F? I would love an MF due to the uniqueness of it, but would rather stick closer to a Pilot medium than fine.
Thanks for watching David! Pilot Fine and Sailor Fine are quite close actually--of course it depends on which pen. For example, Sailor Fine and Custom 823 F are similar in line width as is the Sailor 21k Medium and Custom 823 Medium. The MF would be somewhere in the middle. Hope this helps!
Your review really give me the idea the sizes of the nib. But I still wondering to get Medium or Broad nib. I have platinum 3776 medium and Pilot Custom 74 medium. Should I stick with Medium nib for sailor?
@@audiolover hi. I just did a video comparing line width of various medium nib sizes on my channel. You can check them here th-cam.com/video/MRdV8vEjDqE/w-d-xo.html
@@audiolover platinum medium writes more like a European medium, Pilot medium writes more like Japanese medium: in general, Platinum writes one size broader so Platinum UEF is equivalent to Pilot/Sailor EF:)
Congratulations on creating such an exhaustive video on Sailor nibs. It’s probably one of a kind on Sailor nibs on TH-cam. I am looking to get a Sailor Pro Gear Slim and I am really undecided about fine and medium nib sizes. I already own a Platinum 3776 Century in Fine and enjoy it. I have smallish handwriting. I am gravitating towards a fine nib in Sailor as I already use a Platinum fine. But, then again, I think a medium 14k Sailor nib wouldn’t be such a bad idea for the sake of variety. Interestingly, the writing sample of a medium 14k Sailor nib sent by my trusted pen store looks broader than yours, making me a little skeptical of getting a medium 14K Sailor nib. What would you recommend? A Sailor 14k fine or medium nib. Thank you.
I’d recommend the 14k medium, not only for the sake of variety, but also for the fact that I found the 14k nibs to be harder, slightly drier and maybe ver so slightly thinner in line-width than their softer, wetter 21k counterparts. In that sense, the 14k medium would likely please you with its little more wetness and just about desirable line-width (an acceptably good medium line). I’ll admit, though, that a majority of my Sailor pens are the 21k ones.
@@sajjadhusain4146 Dear Sajjad, thanks for your response. I finally got a fine nib as medium was too broad for me. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll share my experience with you soon. 👍🏼
@@MrJungleman1 Oh, that’s great Ajay. Frankly, either way, you cannot go wrong with the Sailor nibs. They are almost always superbly tuned out of the box writers. So, you did just as well in finally deciding to just go for the F nib. The EF is also extremely nice. The only EF I ever really liked. Even their steel nibs are pretty good, in my experience. I think even the 14k M-F (medium-fine) when available is a good option for its true middle grind between the F and the M nibs. Anyway, it will be good to hear later how you feel about the pen and the nib. Good luck!
The 21k seem to be wetter or lay down more ink, resulting in better pigment on the page. It's like 21k gold nibs should be called artist grade nibs and the others student grade 😆 Maybe in the future lol thanks for sharing!!!
I like your medium 21k nib writing so if I were to get same as medium 21k then what would be it sized at Japanese standard? I mean one of the retailer here sells at Japanese broad = American medium so are your measurement are for American medium ?
Thanks for watching! Not sure we understand what you mean! The nibs we demonstrated here are all Japanese nibs :) Feel free to email us if you have anymore questions!
If the pens are inked with the same ink, the 21k nibs are definitely wetter writers. Even with the EF the difference was visible. Thanks for the video. It will be of use should I ever decide to drop the big bucks for a Sailor fountain pen.
Nice how you interact and listen to each other. Not common. Good review. Sailor is a quality brand, but models a bit too expensive. Not an economic entrance model ?? Thank you.
Anyone here in the comments know much about the sailor pens over the years? I have a weird one i'd like someone to take a look at..or point me in the right direction to get some information on it?
Most comprehensive Sailor nibs review on TH-cam
Thank youuuu so much! 🥺

So glad our video could help you like this! You might like the 21k Broad nib too :)
I hope you ship to New Zealand because I spotted a few things there that I rather like 😁
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf Yay! The Zoom is so much fun! Yes, we ship internationally 😉
Recent subscriber - your videos are impressive! Any chance that you might do a comparison of music nibs between Sailor, Platinum and Pilot?
Thank you! It's on our list :)
Thank you for the detailed and meticulous and detailed comparison.
Is there a difference in feedback between the 14K and 21K Fine nib? Is one smoother than the other?
21k is noticeably smoother :)
great info and comparison. The best I have seen
Super comparision!
Great review. I am looking at a 1911L stormy seas and still debating MF v Medium. I am use to european medium nibs e.g. Delta, Visconti, Dupont, Pelikan. How do Sailor nibs run in comparison with EU made nibs? Thx.
If you're used to a European Medium, I'd recommend the Sailor Medium or Broad. The MF may be a bit too fine for you!
@@Yoseka i like your channel. You do a great job:)
Hi, just found your channel today, I love it. Sailor nibs are very special.
Also, a little joke (in a "Dilbert" way) :
- Hi, what is your job, again ?
- Drawing lines with pens in a relaxing way for viewers
- Is it interesting ?
- Yes, a lot !
- Then why did I, your boss, caught you sleeping on your desk ?
- My work was effective :)
Hahaha thank you so much for watching :)
I have both 14K slim and 21K std versions in M-F. I wouldn't say line thickness is different when no pressure applied, but 21K nib is more interesting. It is noticeable softer, has more feel when writing, and if you push it harder you'll get thicker line. So it provides sort of line variation , which 14K slim version nib doesnt have
This helped with my Pro Gear 21k purchase, went with a M nib. That little extra thickness from the MF to show off some ink shading.
29:32 for the cheat sheet if you don't want to watch the whole thing.
What ink were you using for these line tests? Ah, you mention it in passing as Sailor Jentle Blue Black.
Hi Aaron, it's Sailor Blue Black!
Would the medium nib still be fine enough to use for small writing in a Hobonichi?
Your review really give me the idea the sizes of the nib. But I still wondering to get Medium or Broad nib. I have platinum 3776 medium and Pilot Custom 74 medium. Should I stick with Medium nib for sailor?
Hi Agnes! Probably a 21k nib Medium or a 14k Broad is what we would suggest :)
How Platinium Medium is different from Pilot 74 Medium? 🤔
@@audiolover hi. I just did a video comparing line width of various medium nib sizes on my channel. You can check them here

@@agnesrambling oh wow 7 days ago..in time! 😃 Thanks! 👍✍️
@@audiolover platinum medium writes more like a European medium, Pilot medium writes more like Japanese medium: in general, Platinum writes one size broader so Platinum UEF is equivalent to Pilot/Sailor EF:)
is sailor nibs interchangeable ? with standard size 6 nib
11:17 figure-eights, or figure-eight swirls
Ah! Thank you!
Good luck!
Medium Fine seems to be where you really start to notice the ink color and shade variance.
Yes, I would agree with that!
The 21k seem to be wetter or lay down more ink, resulting in better pigment on the page. It's like 21k gold nibs should be called artist grade nibs and the others student grade 😆 Maybe in the future lol thanks for sharing!!!
Haha very true of the difference between the 21k and the 14k! Thanks for watching :)
*Thank you!*
Excellent efforts thank you
I like your medium 21k nib writing so if I were to get same as medium 21k then what would be it sized at Japanese standard? I mean one of the retailer here sells at Japanese broad = American medium so are your measurement are for American medium ?
Thanks for watching! Not sure we understand what you mean! The nibs we demonstrated here are all Japanese nibs :) Feel free to email us if you have anymore questions!
If the pens are inked with the same ink, the 21k nibs are definitely wetter writers. Even with the EF the difference was visible.
Thanks for the video. It will be of use should I ever decide to drop the big bucks for a Sailor fountain pen.
Many thanks,
Thanx
Nice how you interact and listen to each other. Not common. Good review. Sailor is a quality brand, but models a bit too expensive. Not an economic entrance model ?? Thank you.

I know this video is old, but I think the squiggles are called "figure 8s" :)
Like gold nib
You just get Sailor, don't you?
This has to be the perfect crime.
It smokes every other Sailor review out there!
Anyone here in the comments know much about the sailor pens over the years? I have a weird one i'd like someone to take a look at..or point me in the right direction to get some information on it?
yeah they're called squiggles : )
Dear I want writing on my hand by this fountain pen✒️🤚🖋️
this girls ramblings are adorable :)
WTF?! The M-F has a more large tract stroke than M in 14kt nib!
