Bilal Patel they don’t look big tho, bodybuilding isn’t about looking good, no bodybuilder I have seen or heard ever claims that they’re healthy or their lifestyle is healthy, it’s about being as big as possible.
We're Frank Zane or Serge nubret less committed than today's mass monsters? Did Mike Mentzer workout with less intensity? No way! Today's mass monsters are mostly the result of drug regimens, genetic types and their willingness to sacrifice their future health for size. Personally, I think classic physique is not only more aesthetic, but the competitors are going to live longer lives as well.. I hope bodybuilding moves back in that direction for its own sake....
Someone who is classic phyisque problaby takes milder doses and less substances, sure they will shorten their lifespan but by how much? I'd say that they might be losing 10% of their lifespan or 20%, meanwhile we see bodybuilders dropping dead who go for mass and are up in the grams, they die at the age of 40-50 and that's pretty insane honestly. This doesn't mean everyone who uses a lot of gear will die like Ronnie Coleman or Arnold but still, people who take less have less side-effects and better prospects on health.
The Progressive Brit that's a fair point.... However if you look at modern bodybuilders dropping off like flies before they're 50 and many before they're 40, and compare that to people like Bill Pearl who are still alive in their 80s, Frank Zane who's in great shape in his 70s and other earlier bodybuilders, there's no question that the classic physique stars are in fact living way longer and some of them are still in great health....
Todays physiques are the result of HGH, Insulin + steroids. Any wonder they look like deformed liferafts. Bodybuilding was originally based upon ancient classic Greek/ Roman statues. Aesthetics always will be more appealing than mass for mass sake.
When I was a child wanted to look like an action man figure, or then like spider man, not like hulk. Actually almost nobody dreams about being Hulk as a child.
Classic physique is definitely a healthier weight to live by. Less substances (baby pleaseee,(sorry couldnt resist)). I honestly think open bodybuilding is riskier as you put everything to the extreme. Sure classic category requires a lot of effort and dedication, but I view it as persuing bodybuilding “the safer route”. Open is whatever it takes while classic is whatever it takes as well but in a modest manner in terms of drugs and weight.
stop talking with no basis to your claims that there are less substances used in lower divisions of bodybuilding. anyone with a foot in the sphere of competitive bodybuilding would know that the protocols barely differ
If you aren't gifted but have a lot of money it's really easier to come in classic physique but I don't think you will be at the top level because you will not have the knowledge to (but if you have money you have all keys) just work a little plus insuline but you will not be crispy like the others so.. Little difficult than opens to me

I think you got it right. Bodybuilders today while impressive for their dedication, mass and risk-taking behaviour, look like shit. Arnold really hit it on the head when he talked about "bottle-shaped" bodies. Bring back that V.

Agree. Bodybuilders are amazing, but the classic physique is much more aesthetically pleasing. No many people can see themselves at 300 lbs. not to mention that most bodybuilders look fat af in clothes. I switched from physique years ago when I first saw mike rashid. Then it was called muscle model.
When I stopped football my first reaction was to be a bodybuilder but I had no directions and just tried to get as big as possible. And I lost most of my athleticism and ended up injured and set me back a couple years. After that I decided I wasn’t willing to take myself to the Phil Heath level because I didn’t want to risk my health. I tried powerlifting and CrossFit just to fill my competitive void. Then classic physique came around and I found out weight limits according to height. This was the turning point for me. I fill like classic physique is my perfect fit because I can be a bodybuilder but keep my athleticism. And I’ll probably never do anything else now. Lol
Who really want to be 300lbs on a regular basis? Honestly it's interesting to watch but I'd prefer to have a classic physique. Clothing does not fit so you have to get it tailored, extremely high amounts of drugs, and woman....woman prefer the more lean with some size physique vs someone 300lbs of muscle! It's fun to watch but hell, I don't want to look like that lol.
Lol exactly.. they cannot scratch there own back. Shortness of breath, etc. Muscle weighs more than fat so imagin how fat ppl walk and feel....now imagin 300lbs of solid muscle! That's like pulling a truck everyday! Shit sex is difficult because you cannot lay on top of a woman.. that would be premeditated murder lol (if they can get hard due to the drugs).

But at the same time if less people care about your division, than your division can die. Look at Women's bodybuilding. I think the mass monster division could be "threatened" in the aspect of having less money from sponsorships and merch sales because us as fans don't care about it as much.
Robert Cox they want to be admired for their size. Not looked at like freaks for it. That's the problem. I have no problem with huge bodybuilders. I just think classic looks better. That's a personal preference.

It’s a well known fact that Arnold himself was just a weekend warrior. All it takes is 2 1 hour workouts each weekend and a few protein shakes in between.
Peyton Graf There's no way that's true, with or without steroids. For me to maintain classic physique tier muscle mass (without cutting bodyfat and staying kinda fluffy), I have to workout at least every other day, only occasionally skipping a day. And don't even ask how many eggs I eat and how often I fart. Granted the only drug I take clen (in cycles) so I can lean bulk. I found your channel last night and I’ve watched almost every video now. I have no idea why it was recommended to me, I know nothing about body building. But it’s really interesting, I’m obsessed 😂
Its,for guys that dont want to,die at 45 or 50, guys that dont want pregnant gh/insulin bellies plus they look a hell of a lot better and work harder, classics build their muscle, they dont create them with synthol. Phil Heath looks like total crap
The only difference is classic takes steroids open division takes a shit load of steroids end of .Phil and other big stars all had classic physique bodies years ago then as they got older took more an more gear an so they got bigger and bigger it's not rocket science ffs .
It's easier because you don't have to put so much focus on size. You can weight 220lbs and be huge for classic vs having to weigh 275lbs just to place top 10.
Classic physique competitors have to make sure their waists keep tight and some have to train the vacuum, while open bodybuilders seem to just let their body grow and not care for symmetry
Ive been training for a while now and when all im training for is size im never satisfied. And not in the, "yea i want to be greater than i am right now" but in the "i will never be as big as i want to be" mentality. I could put on 30 pounds and i wouldnt be happy. I hope i find something else as i begin to train more for not only enjoyment, but for balance between size and aesthetics. Personally, i believe i have a mich better chance at being happy with how i look as i take this new approach. Also, great video, Nick. You never disappoint 👍
Sure, classic physique might be somewhat easier than open, I'll agree to that. And I will admit that I do appreciate the mass monsters for what they are, but the one key thing here is: I don't want to look like that. Classic physique is what I wouldd choose to look like over the mass monsters anyday of the week.
Yea the problem with today's mass monsters is they look FREAKISH and that doesn't really inspire people to want to look like that. Most guys wanna be muscular but know they would never wanna push it that far or be that out of proportion. You look at rich back in the day, his triceps alone we're comically oversized to the point you're like how much of a pain in the ass is that to deal with on a regular basis
Excellent video Nick! Thank you for sticking up for the classic physique bodybuilders. Mens Open bodybuilding has become disgusting with their bloated bubble guts and ridiculous non-aesthetic size.
Great topic, Nick. Growing up with Arnold, Lou, Franco, and Zane we all thought that was attainable. Then through the 80s and into the early Dorian reign, it became more about chemicals and drugs than it did aesthetics. If my bodybuilding role models were Heath, Cutler and such I would have never thought it were possible without a shitload of PEDs. Don’t get me wrong, the monsters are world class athletes, but it’s more than I’d ever want.
I think it's interesting how perspective has changed. I started training in the late 80's and my idols at the time were from the "golden era" and they would now be considered classic physiques, yet friends of mine said they were disgusting and unnatural. What would they think of today's bodybuilers? I was a skinny so ideally I would love to have been the freaky massive dude but genes would never have allowed it. But I was still in the gym six days a week, eating a disciplined diet and taking some "extra" help. Genetics and personal choice I think bit I'm sure they're still putting in the effort.
Good to have people like you to bring this kinda of topic. Is all about “taste” what really like to these guys...some want to look like “Hulk” some just simply want to look like “Thor”.
"Better, healthier, more realistic" You nailed it. Is open bodybuilding more difficult? Sure. Is that a physique many people are trying to attain? No, not really.
When I was younger and ignorant about current bodybuilding, I thought bodybuilders were guys who looked like Arnold, Zane, and that crowd. Once I got older and first saw guys like Kai Greene and Phil Heath, I immediately thought, “I’m not a fan of the thick waist, massive type, look.” Like you said Nick, it’s certainly impressive, but I’m a fan of Classic Physique because that’s how I always imagined bodybuilding to be. I think it’s much more aesthetic, but that’s just my preference, and probably the preference of the pro competitors, not because they can’t. As a side note I’d say He-Man was more classic than open, but that’s just a fun remark. Overall, definitely agree with you.
This stemmed from Jose Raymond's video yesterday. I think he has some truth to his case. I don't take it negatively. Classic guys sometimes can't fill out enough to look like true bodybuilders, same with men's physique. And it should be no shame in it, just get in where you fit in. But don't call it 'easier'. There aren't enough BB divisions in the IFBB like in the NPC anyway, it's either 212 or open. I think classic physique is to fill that void. Aka, taller 212 guys.
A little late, but this point is really it. Do what you're best at. Maybe some of the classic guys can't fill out like the open guys, but many of the open guys wouldn't make it in some of the smaller divisions either.
It's not a question of "easier" or not "working as hard." Men's Physique is obviously putting in the work like Arnold and the boys of the golden era. And they lived in the gym. It gets down to "How much gear do you want to take?" Do you want to be a mass monster with a bubble gut? Or do you want to be a chemist and find out what's the right prescription for the most aesthetic build? And thank you so much, Nick, for pointing out that even "Classic" is on gear.
Nick you are so spot on in this video. Classic physique is bodybuilding and to be honest it is probably harder to achieve their bodies verses the open bodybuilders. Yes classic physique competitors are still taking steriods but nothing to the extent of the open bodybuilders. Less drugs, awesome physique, means even harder work. While i appreciate the mass monsters and enjoy seeing how ridiculously big they get, i would way sooner look like a Classic Physique competitor eveyday of the he week. When open bodybuilders insult the Classic physique bodybuilder, it shows they are just threatened by the popularity of the Golden Era Bodybuilders.
They aren't pushing their bodies like open bodybuilders do. That in itself shows its easier to do than the open. But there is nothing wrong with wanting a smaller, more aesthetic physique. Less risk and lots of financial openings is a smart way to go. That being said I'll always be an open bb fan 😬
Higher dosage of exogenous hormones = faster recovery. It is more difficult to push yourself to the max when your body is not fully recovered from the previous workout (i.e. when you take lower doses of exogenous hormones, or none at all). Open bodybuilders have to force-feed themselves more, though.
I feel that maybe 5% of the population has the potential to be a super heavy weight. Where maybe 20% of the population has the potential to be classic. It simply opens the stage up to more people that just dont have the genes to be 250+ shredded. Hell most people dont have the genes to be 200 and shredded. Everyone that competes trains hard. Everyone is taking the stuff. In most cases in the same amounts if not more. They're all doing the same shit with different results. That's why there are 4 different categories. Just my 2 cents
those are some awfully generous stats but i get the gist, regardless it should be about building the most pleasing physique not the biggest version of a pleasing physique
Totally agree 100%... I'm entering one next week. The smaller natural show is ok. But this open the door for me to return to NPC and by the way, I'm 47. So it allows for me to stay healthy at my age and get to enjoy the sport.
You hit it near the end. The audience are moving towards classic physique. Classic physique is growing not just because of the competitors, but the audience as well. Also, as it's relatively new, it gives people are chance to gain the benefits of being a pioneering/establishing/founding/early figure in it. And bodybuilding is a career- some may just figure classic is the direction the industry is heading in

It is true that Breon couldn’t cut it in 212 but that’s cuz they wanted mass monsters and Breon was always smaller but aesthetic
2:19 some damn good vacuums, that's why they say that stuff, jealous ninja turtles cant pull good vacuums . . .
I’m thinking about switching over myself. I believe it is more obtainable
Justin Holland and more sustainable.
Takamusasu well I’m natural so more practical as well 👍🏼
I agree. Classic Physique is for an attainable body but you still gotta work hard.
Justin Holland Ams safer.
And more natural less harmful on the body
I found your channel last night and I’ve watched almost every video now. I have no idea why it was recommended to me, I know nothing about body building. But it’s really interesting, I’m obsessed 😂
Bitter words from Bitter people
Raymond Ervin who's bitter? For the record, Olympia size bodybuilders look ridiculous. Nothing bitter about that
Paul Wright I think the OLYMPIA size people feel there place in history is in threat and they are scared of that
Agreed 💯its healthier, more obtainable, and more “natural” if you will haha i use the term loosely 😉
I'd rather look like bumstead than Ramy any day of the week bro
You wont look like neither
Classic Physique is my favourite division, without a doubt!
I would be super happy with a classic physique. I honestly would rather be average/skinny than a mass monster. Thumbs down to those guts.
They're not exactly skinny tho lol
That’s the problem with open bodybuilding it’s all about size bodybuilding is supposed to be who has the best physique
Its,for guys that dont want to,die at 45 or 50, guys that dont want pregnant gh/insulin bellies plus they look a hell of a lot better and work harder, classics build their muscle, they dont create them with synthol. Phil Heath looks like total crap
Mike Mentzer was always a favourite of mine. I hope Classic becomes more popular, I really do
The heart can't tell the difference between 400 pounds of muscle and 400 of fat still has to work way to hard.
DUMBASS HEART!
stubones Same with steroid abuse. Look up Mike Matarazzo. Clogged arteries aka plaque all over the place.
Yes, it can.
Lol yes it can
+stubones muscles require quite a bit of blood tho. so it basically evens out. the heart works just as hard either way.
3:45 holy fucking vacuum Batman!!! Also, dope ass vid Nick!
The only difference is classic takes steroids open division takes a shit load of steroids end of .Phil and other big stars all had classic physique bodies years ago then as they got older took more an more gear an so they got bigger and bigger it's not rocket science ffs .
I honestly just find classic more aesthetic. I appreciate the men’s open, but look at what it’s become.
It's easier because you don't have to put so much focus on size. You can weight 220lbs and be huge for classic vs having to weigh 275lbs just to place top 10.
I'm totally addicted to ur channel, ur way of talking and ur unbiased reasonable opinions like d one in this video. Ur d BBC of Bodybuilding...
Classic Bodybuilding + Insulin + HGH + tons of food = Open Bodybuilding
3:28 Ramy looked so so much better than he does now! I dont Really like mass monsters, but I make an excuse for that picture.
Big Lenny will win classic Physique next year!! Abs is all that matters!
Swedish Wiking ! The Tom platz of abs baby, but i think he wouldnt win bro, because politics
+Swedish Wiking ! But what will Dale think?🤔
Chris
All I got to say is Frank Zane at 70 years old is amazing
Classic physique is much more appealing and better looking.
Big fan of your channel btw.
You are right it’s more obtainable for us ‘normal’ people and I recon it really does look better.
Classic physique competitors have to make sure their waists keep tight and some have to train the vacuum, while open bodybuilders seem to just let their body grow and not care for symmetry
M A don’t forget genetics bro
6:22, those are my superheroes.
So glad classic is making a comeback 🙏🏻
Ive been training for a while now and when all im training for is size im never satisfied. And not in the, "yea i want to be greater than i am right now" but in the "i will never be as big as i want to be" mentality. I could put on 30 pounds and i wouldnt be happy. I hope i find something else as i begin to train more for not only enjoyment, but for balance between size and aesthetics. Personally, i believe i have a mich better chance at being happy with how i look as i take this new approach. Also, great video, Nick. You never disappoint 👍
great video as always nick
Classic physique is more sustainable too. Food wise. 😁
Honestly i think classic is just too big for me, i like man's physique looks, with good legs
I have never felt so connected to someone else's opinion on TH-cam. Keep up the great content Nick's Strength and Power.
Heck yes let's get back to our roots so that those before us live to mentor the next generation of builders, weightlifters, etc.....
I want a in between " Nightwing and Batman " aesthetic, and a Gogeta aesthetic.
Nick you got it right with the look up to part
I think it's interesting how perspective has changed. I started training in the late 80's and my idols at the time were from the "golden era" and they would now be considered classic physiques, yet friends of mine said they were disgusting and unnatural. What would they think of today's bodybuilers? I was a skinny so ideally I would love to have been the freaky massive dude but genes would never have allowed it. But I was still in the gym six days a week, eating a disciplined diet and taking some "extra" help. Genetics and personal choice I think bit I'm sure they're still putting in the effort.
I don’t think it’s easy, I think it’s more aesthetically pleasing.
That classic look is how it really should be
This video could've been only 1 second long, Nick saying "no".
Good to have people like you to bring this kinda of topic. Is all about “taste” what really like to these guys...some want to look like “Hulk” some just simply want to look like “Thor”.
I bet you the classic guys can walk around without losing their breath.
"Better, healthier, more realistic"
You nailed it.
Is open bodybuilding more difficult? Sure. Is that a physique many people are trying to attain? No, not really.
I don't think open bodybuilders could pull off what classic physique competitors do
Cedric McMillan can hit some great classic shots , then saying that he's not placing high enough to win
Nothing easy about building that kind of physique. And some of these guys will actually live past 50 years old.
Classic is way better than pros. Pros are all out of shape, distended guts. I woukd rather look like a superhero, athletic looking as well. Imo.
As phil heath said, with all due respect classic physique is amazing, but its not even Close to open Bodybuilding
Heavy Weight Boxing changed and it has a lot to do with the mentally change as well. Thanks for this channel very informative.
Will Perry well said
Derek Napier well it all comes down to how your body reacts to roids, that's more important than genetics when using roids comes in play.
those are some awfully generous stats but i get the gist, regardless it should be about building the most pleasing physique not the biggest version of a pleasing physique
nick you and dave polumbo are THE two guys to listen too!!! keep up the AWESOME work kiddo!!!!!!
I just would like to block my myostatin or increase my folistatin along with being able to afford to buy more protein ! Nutrition is damn expensive !
Totally agree 100%... I'm entering one next week. The smaller natural show is ok. But this open the door for me to return to NPC and by the way, I'm 47. So it allows for me to stay healthy at my age and get to enjoy the sport.
I dont know about easier but its definitely better.
“bodybuilding is not about being the biggest, its about symmetry and looking a certain way” -Rich Piana my favourite quote
Frank Zane, although smaller, had a far better physique than any mass monster there has ever been imo
