I want to become a data scientist. I have done a bootcamp only on python with all the skills you mentioned 1 year ago and have projects on this. I like mathematics a lot but i sure need guidance from a professional like you on how to land a job in the field. I need to be confident to land interviews. Can you mentor me?

I am no data scientist expert by a longshot, but I believe I know enough to say that it will be highly relevant for a long, long time simply because it involves the most prevalent thing ever that will never go away: information.

One statement struck me really hard and it's everything for me:
"Coding is a tool, Learn the data science before the tools"

    SUMMARY :
Step 1: Research Data Science Job Family
    - Explore various roles under the data science umbrella, including data scientist, data analyst, machine learning engineer, AI specialist, data engineer, analytics manager, research scientist, etc.
    - Understand the responsibilities and required skill sets for each role to identify your interests and goals.
    Step 2: Understand Layoff Statistics
    - Recognize that while data scientist roles were affected by layoffs, they were less affected compared to other roles like HR and software engineering.
    Step 3: Learn Fundamentals
    3.1 Statistics:
    - Descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation, frequency distribution, etc.).
    - Inferential statistics (probability distribution, hypothesis testing, sampling, time series analysis, etc.).
    3.2 Machine Learning:
    - Supervised learning (linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, random forest, neural networks, etc.).
    - Unsupervised learning (k-means clustering, hierarchical clustering, principal component analysis, etc.).
    Step 4: Coding Skills
    - Learn Python for data analysis (libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib) and machine learning (libraries like Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
    - Gain proficiency in SQL for data manipulation and querying databases.
    Step 5: Tools Mastery
    - Familiarize yourself with tools like Jupyter Notebooks and Google Colab for coding and data analysis.
    - Understand version control systems like Git for code management and collaboration.
Step 6: Business and Product Understanding
    - Learn business fundamentals and product development lifecycle to understand how data science contributes to business success.
    - Develop communication skills to effectively convey insights and recommendations to stakeholders.
    Step 7: Project Portfolio
    - Work on a variety of projects that showcase your skills and understanding of data science concepts.
    - Projects could include hypothesis testing, time series forecasting, customer fraud detection, recommender systems, exploratory data analysis, etc.
    - Utilize free datasets from platforms like Kaggle and Google Data Search for project implementation.
    Step 8: Interview Preparation
    - Practice behavioral, coding, and case study interviews.
    - Be able to solve case studies demonstrating problem-solving skills and application of data science techniques.
    Note:
    - The timeline for learning these skills may vary for each individual.
    - Continuous learning and practice are essential for mastering data science.
    - Stay updated with industry trends and technologies to remain competitive in the field.
This roadmap provides a structured approach to learning data science and preparing for a career in the field. Adjustments can be made based on personal interests, goals, and feedback received during the learning journey.

I'm still comparing bootcamps here in Canada and I believe the most 3 that stand out are General Assembly, university of Toronto continuing studies bootcamp (run by edx but also receiving a certificate by UofT), third is lighthouse which has the best reputation but it's not as recognized as UofT.

Time line is simplisitic. The stats alone is one year of uni-level study. The probability is another and assumes you know multivariable calculus. Then, and only then, can you go on to stochastic processes and then time series analysis. O/w you will be at a serious loss in abstract understanding. The coding part is reletively simple.

Maybe it's not appropriate to judge whether the magnitude of laid off numbers toward data scientists is big or not. The absolute numbers vary greatly between different roles (such as SWE, DS, HR, ...), making it difficult to assess based solely on the laid-off groups.

    • @SundasKhalid
      @SundasKhalid  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That’s fair. There are far more SWEs than data science folks. The study is also dependent on self-reporting so could be biased due to that (like most self-reported studies) but that’s the numbers we have. If you have additional insights, would love to hear.

My recommendation is start as a project manager over data lake or similar projects and then slowly learn these skills otj and transfer internally to that role. Learning statistics alone is enuff to gray your entire head!

Sundas you recommend a lot of courses and projects to build your portfolio. If I’m just about to go to college is it worth it to seek a degree in data analytics, will that give me an edge in finding a job in the future?

So like… we don’t need any certificates or degrees? We can just have our portfolio and that’ll land us jobs? 😮

I have a question: I am a biology graduate (studied in French). I am planning to shift to data science. I’ve seen in many comments and posts that to be a data scientist, you need to learn statistics because it’s the core of data science. I want to obtain a university degree to ensure I have a good understanding of this field and leave room for future career development. I am committed to this path; I know it will be long and hard, but I want to choose the right undergraduate path. Should I study computer science because I have no knowledge of programming and coding, or should I major in statistics and add data analytics as a minor? Alternatively, is a community college sufficient to avoid wasting time and start learning while working, or should I just take a certificate on Coursera or any institute to become a data analyst and then start my journey to reach the highest position level? I am so confused; please help
