I agree with you Justin. These guys are playing live and following in the footsteps of their blues idols. It's a pretty heavy lift to translate such a high energy show in their 80's and they are still out there hammering away!

Thanks Justin for some wise remarks. The question is: What should our expectation be? Do we expect 80 year old musicians to perform better than ever? Is it even fair to make such comparisons? I just marvel at the fact they can still pull it off. I saw Jerry Lee Lewis when he was in his 80ies. Compared to this it is absolutely intergalctic what the Stones put on. Personally, I would wish for smaller settings, more songs from their vast back catalogue, more intimacy. The big stadium shows have run their courses, at least for me. I can not get excited about hearing Satisfaction for the 10.000s time. Therefore I am so so happy when I get one-off gems like Let It Bleed and Time Is On My Side in New Orleans. And of course the new songs from Hackney Diamonds!

there's nothing to add to this comment, LET IT BLEED in a cajun style was a very good idea, also with Irma Thomas.

What should we expect? We should still be able to expect a damn good show. Regardless of their age. Their ticket prices are ridiculously high. If they can’t still do it then they should not be charging money for it. Keith Richards looks and sounds half dead on stage. The Houston show he barely did anything.

@@MrPernell27 I agree that they should deliver. I disagree with your view that they don’t. I think the show in New Orleans was very good, Huston was not quite as good but that is to be expected on an opening night. Reviews were still, by and large, pretty positive.

I was at NOLA … and it was awesome 🎉 Mick even more energised than ever - voice /sound was incredible ! Including the local artists was really great too - Chanel was terrific too ! I would say Keith did come over a little reserved and not entirely comfortable in the first hour - I wondered if something was up - hearing him doing just the one number made me think that . Again that one number took a while to get going but he finished sweetly 🎸 I did also notice minimal interaction between Keith and Mick … However all in all a really special event well worth flying in from London for ❤ If Keith is suffering I hope he fully recovers 🤞🏼

I live in New Orleans and was at the Jazz Fest show. I loved every minute of it. This isn't 1972 and I don't expect it to be. It's incredible for what they are still able to do. As for Keith, I do believe that he is definitely recovering from something. He had a tissue box by the drum stand and I saw him use a tissue at least once. I'm glad everyone is still standing. I'm glad I'm still standing 😂. I'm going to the Atlanta show and looking forward to it.

I really appreciate the way you put it .. for me I’m in awe of them . I’m going to see them in Vegas and when I first started watching some of their videos from their last tour I thought how I had notice they have slowed down .But the last show I saw was 1983. But for them to be doing this at their age .. is in itself something to see , rock legends . And you are right this is uncharted territory for a rock band , and fans may not be used to seeing them this up there in years . I’m thrilled to be able to see them again . Unless it was/is with the legends that inspired them to play in the first place (John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Hubert Sumlin), I'm not generally a fan of guest artists at Stones shows - but with Dwayne and (in particular) Irma, they got it spot-on! Another guest I'd be glad to see is Chris Farlowe - not a name well-known in the USA, but he topped the UK charts with the Jagger-produced 'Out Of Time' in 1966.
I'm absolutely fine with Keith (and Ron) sitting down occasionally if it improves their playing. The intro to 'Gimme Shelter' is something he's been screwing up occasionally for years ('Brown Sugar' was another one), so good on Keith for taking a bit more care. Yes, showmanship is important - but NOT if it's to the detriment of the actual music.
In 1998, I saw a London show featuring Jerry Lee Lewis (63), Little Richard (65) and Chuck Berry (71). They all did more than OK, but Mick and Keith in their 80s are STILL musically superior, play longer and put on more of a show than those relative youngsters did at the time!

Thanks so much Justin for your always thoughtful perspective on our boys! I've watched both shows in their entirety, and I have a few thoughts: opening night, in Houston, felt a little rusty to my ears. The band felt disjointed, and I could see Mick was struggling with the high notes. And then there was NOLA! Maybe it was the few days of rest in between shows, or maybe it was more rehearsals...but I swear, from the opening chord of Start Me Up, they had my attention and admiration! I was totally gobsmacked, the difference between the 2 shows felt like night and day! It's almost like they regrouped after Houston and raised their own barre, and/or stepped back into their greatness. I'm a singer/performer myself, and watching Mick here was like getting a master class on how it's done! I felt he was freer both in voice and body at this show, and overall he just seemed to really be enjoying himself. Ronnie was really exceptional too! Keith was far better than in the first show, definitely looser, and seemingly happier. I would like non-musicians amongst us to realize how hard it is to play an instrument with arthritis. Keith has already told us that he suffers with arthritic fingers, so....let's cut him some slack, and realize that part of his genius has always been about creating more from less (hence open G tuning). So now, at 80 years old, he simply won't have the dexterity that he once had, but....his adaptability will prove his genius, again, as it always does! The whole band and extended band...from Bernard & Chanelle, to Chuck on keys, the horn section. Daryl Jones....were all so so tight, and gave a GREAT performance! To add Dwayne Doopsie and Irma Thomas to the show was just the most delicious icing on an already delicious cake! I really felt like this was a very special show, for everyone, but most importantly, I think it was really special for Mick & the boys. And with all the jazzy traditions incorporated throughout (the call and response, extra horn and bass solos) I think Charlie would've approved BIG time! So...that's my take! Thanks for all you do, Justin, much appreciated! Take good care, peace & love from Toronto, Canada! ♥🎵🎶

I agree. Yes, they're older, but it's a LONG GAP from the end of their last tour (Aug. 3, 2022) to this tour. Also, an afternoon gig in broad daylight... It's just different. Ronnie mentioned it before the show and Mick commented about it re: the Hyde Park show. This is a nighttime band.
The NYC-club gig looked pretty on point.
I heard that Keith is recovering from COVID. Regardless, HUGE RESPECT for going on with the show.
Keith and Ronnie wear their guitars TOO LOW. They should sit down for the whole show.
Inviting Irma Thomas to perform TIOMS was brilliant and super classy. It shows that The Stones are still in the music.
Cellphones don't capture magic, spirit and energy. The reviews from people at the shows were good, if not amazing.
I really hope to see them in Cleveland, mid tour.

First off, These guys have earned the right to play wherever and however they want to. I saw them in Houston on the No Filter tour and I was expecting Mick to perform and sound somewhat like he does now, and he blew me away with his energy for being in his mid-seventies. So 4 or 5 years later I’m not surprised to see a drop in his energy level at age 80. Temper your expectations. He still sounds like Mick. Regarding Keith, he can sit all he wants as long as he plays well. He wants to get it right, I appreciate that. I do agree with those that say The Stones should consider playing smaller venues at this point. I wasn’t at either of the first two shows, but by watching the videos, it looks like their days of commanding a stadium stage are behind them. Regardless, what a remarkable run. Nothing but respect for the boys.

@bigtip8371 As promised. But first Happy Mother's Day to any moms reading this. The show was fantastic! My mom, age 73, had never seen the Stones before, as did the two girls in their early 20s seated to my left, and their friends in the standing section on the stadium floor. iAnd the Stones played as if there were people who were seeing them for the 1st time and wanted to impress. I love those guys. Keef must have heard us all, no sitting for him. The only break for him was band introductions which of course Mick handles those. Set list was a mix of favorites, newbies and a few unearthed gems. All you Stones fans know this is SOP for them. I see Steve more comfortable in the drummer's chair. In 2021 we lost Charlie plus it was the slight uncertainty of coming out of covid. Last night's atmosphere seemed free in comparison to then. And Woody has taken on the role of "I got you big bro" in terms of Keef. All the talk about Brian Jones and Mick Taylor being brilliant and all, true as it is let's give Woody his flowers. He's earned them. And finally in the Lisa Fischer/Gimme Shelter role.. this lady Chanel Haynes is stunning to see and hear both! A fantastic night out for all in Las Vegas!

I hate the criticism of Keith’s playing on opening night in Houston. Justin hit some important points about the flu etc. I’ve been playing for nearly 60 years and have had to play sick many times. It’s not easy to do when all you want to do is crawl in bed. Additionally, look at Keith’s fingers and the extreme arthritis. I’m amazed that anyone can play like that. Yet he’s been playing that way for many years. He’s had to learn to play in different positions because of it. I think he’s truly amazing. I would hate to be scrutinized as closely as a band like the Stones. We should be glad they are still here to carry on however they want to do it.

I remember over thirty years ago, Mick talking about not wanting to be playing still when he had to sit down and do it from a chair, and I remember thinking the John Lee Hooker could still rock a house while sitting down. Mick is absolutely amazing for his age. Compare him with David Lee Roth who is much younger and not nearly as spry anymore.

There are other examples of artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis or BB King performing into their 80's. But in those cases they are the center of the show and everything else revolves around supporting them. The difference is that a Stones performance has many more moving parts. Not only do Mick, Keith and Ronnie have to be in sync up front but then Darryl, Steve, Bernard and the rest of the band have to adjust their own performances to support them. So in that way your last comment is spot on, to say the guys who helped invent rock n' roll are continuing to do so, making history every time they step on stage.

I’m a bit concerned with the tour and mistakes- but agree it’s hard to tell on a phone vid.
For years (well decades) I’ve thought it would be cool if they did a stripped down tour- really raw raunchy possibly acoustic blues, like the Rolling Stone Blues at the end of Hackney. I think as they get older that may be what we see from them if they can’t keep up with the energy of their harder songs. It sucks- but Father Time is undefeated. Peace everyone

Unfortunately when you have been around so long, you will always be compared to your peak days. Each album "isn't as good as Let it Bleed", "they don't sound like they did in 81", etc. Fact of the matter is, people should be enjoying this while we still can. They put out a solid record and are willing to take it out on the road...at 80 years old.
It would be amazing to see them do a tour closer to "Stripped" with smaller venues and maybe they could sit down the whole time if they wanted, but the demand outweighs that option. They still want as many people as possible to see them and if this is the last tour, might as well go out big.

Congrats to Justin for the thoughtfulness and generosity of his thoughts on Keith. I am one of those who has been worried about Keith's playing for some time now. All of Justin's points are valid and have given me pause. I have also seen for myself times recently when Keith shows enough ability to assuage some of my fears. And I also have to ask: would Darryl Jones be touring with them in 2024 if Keith simply couldn't hack it? Would Chuck Leavell? I don't believe these guys would - they would call it a day. Yet there they are, and there is Keith, clearly having fun and feeling good much of the time. I now believe he is more careful all the time because he can't quite trust the consistency of his playing on some numbers in particular - he may be ok, or he may get a bit unlucky and have to be covered by the rest of the band. Thanks, Justin, for this perspective.

I am curious about Keith's inconsistent volume levels at times that you mentioned. In prior tours, haven't they just used the guitar's volume knobs? Turn the guitar all the way down before disconnecting & changing guitars, then raise the knob to the desired level? But now there's a guy dedicated to either deciding what we hear or live mixing to extreme levels? That's weird if so. Keith has always been pretty candid, i am curious about that.

I was there. No one expects vintage quality level performances from them and they did not exceed expectations. As much as I have waited a lifetime to see Miss Irma finally get her moment in the spotlight with the Stones, the best thing about the show was Jaggers joke he told directly in Governor Landry's face. Musically the best part was the juidicious use of maracas and Chuck Leavell's heavy lifting. Honestly, there just wasn't much guitar playing. They really could have used a boost from Mick Taylor again. I saw Neil Young the next afternoon and he does a far better job of sounding like prime Neil Young that the Stones can do for themselves at this point. It's nothing to feel bad about. I have seen the Stones a dozen or so times. If you go just expecting to have a fun time and don't have expectations of greatness, you will be satisfied.

I found myself being less dismayed about the current state of the Stones after watching the most recent Motley crue live footage. Motley crue has Jon 5 as the young "slightly overzealous" guy as a replacement, & the Stones have Steve Jordon being the younger, busier, & harder hitter than Charlie. The Stones have decades on motley crue, and very likely still give a better representation of themselves in comparison. Every active, sane, old person i talk to in real life says the key is to keep moving when you're old. That's all the Stones are really trying to do, what they've always done. Play music. So I'm done criticizing the Stones. They have eyes & ears to decide if they like what they're doing& they've earned the right to do what they want. The classic albums and footage will never change, regardless of how negatively time inevitably affects Keith's tired and abused finger & hand joints now. Enjoy the good moments, we all end up like Charlie eventually.

I find the commercial side of the Stones sickening. And have for years. It's become a shameless cash cow.
But the music from performances I've seen from Jazz Fest look truly Amazing for a band that is three men standing, av age 78.6. Mick has the energy of someone 25 years younger (at least he does for those 2 hours the guy must pay for each performance for days after), and Keith & Ronnie are keeping the train rolling. They're a band I've had a love hate relationship with for all of my 52 years but also one I've sadly never seen live. I don't think that'll now ever change as I live in a place they never come to. But you said it, this is the Wild West, these guys are playing at an age that's never been done. I remember going to see The Who, in 2000 at the Royal Albert Hall, and I was worried they'd just be too old. Roger was 56. By today's standards that's nothing.

He did that SMU snafu in 2013, and had been screwing up the intro to Brown Sugar for over 20 years. Especially when either of those songs opened a show. Seems Street Fighting Man and Jumping Jack Flash are the two you can count on Keith to nail the intros when they are the first song while some other options are just going to be questionable.

KR: I don't think he's doing so badly, it's quite alright what he plays, and he'll be more self-assured and outgoing as the tour progresses.
But let alone age and arthritis: I suspect that Keith never touches an electric guitar when he's at home, and he's very reluctant to play one without the band (Fallon Tonight Show, or Guitar Moves “I plug in, I charge $$!”, ...). I can't imagine him sitting down in his Weston library playing along to Stones records with an electric to get his chops down and maybe come up with a new lick or two on older material. Consequently, the only practice he gets playing Stones songs is during rehearsals.
I also wonder if it would help if he switched standard tuning to open-g which would make something more intricate like the Gimme Shelter intro easier to play for him...

I see him constantly playing. Even on songs that have no noticeable piano or keyboards. I saw an interview with Mick's monitor guy. Mick doesn't want Keith in his mix anymore and gets his vocal cues from Chuck and Ronnie. Wasn't Blondie only playing acoustic along with the Stones? They will need something soon. I'd love Taylor to be back full time as long as he plays alot of rhythm instead of just soloing. I don't think anyone would mind having a 4th Stone on stage. I could see Waddy off to the side with Chuck. I bet less than 30% of a stadium crowd would notice. Ronnie is still not stepping up to play a raw chugging rhythm like Keith used to do. Ronnie is still doing the weaving bit and it doesn't really work with Keith playing when and what he wants these days. Ronnie is barely heard. His Strat into a clean Fender is a very poor choice. He needs only humbuckers into a Ampeg or Boogie. And cranked. The soundman can push him up in the mix without Keith noticing anymore. Ronnie used to carry the Faces by himself. The KC show I saw in 2015 was a vastly different sound than current shows. It was so great I cried at times. They were hot that night. Best I'd heard since '81. Too bad there's not a pro-shot I've seen. But if you watch Street or Sympathy you can tell how good they were that night even with the crowd shot videos. But I bet it's impossible to advise Keith or Mick to do anything. Keith seems happy with what he's playing. I've watched some of the clips online. Mick can still sing the songs, though it is in a perfunctory manner. The outlying musicians are the ones holding the songs together, mostly bass and drums. Ronnie and Keith can barely play at this point. I listened to some of their leads and its seems they lose the thread pretty quickly when they improvise. Keith's timing is not what it was, and for one of the shows he muffed the beginning of Start Me Up. I don't really know why they continue. It must be the intoxication of all fanboys who listen with their heart and grade them on a curve. Speaking of grading them on a curve, yes they in their 80s so being able to do anything musically is a wonder. But how can this be enjoyable for a fan who is not listening for mere nostagia's sake? This tour is (another) chance for Stones satellite musicians to get a great paycheck and an adrenaline rush for the remaining Stones -- which they seem to need desperately because there is no reason to continue this other than that. When the obit on the band is written, it will be all about the band of the 60s and early 70s. All these Rolling Stones Inc. tours since the late 1980s will be forgotten.

I’m not really a fan of how aggressively the mixers ride the Keith and Ronnie guitars. I’ve never seen it so apparent in any other band. Is so in your faces it’s just distracting.

You're fortunate to have seen them performing at their best. There was the drug and Jack Daniels fuelled Keith who may or may not have survived the show - it was like the old days of grand prix racing.

@stes3061 Wow! My goodness, I feel fortunate just to read your post. So, you haven't seen them recently. Another cellphone review. Priceless.

@@sg5127 1981 with Stu and Bill, but what's done is done. They were, somehow, magic in 2013. I'll be very happy to see them in 2024 in Cleveland, mid tour. I just hope they play more from their excellent new album.

Perfect, so to compare with them just look at a picture of you then on 69 72 or 75 with one you took yesterday... see the difference ? They still want to play because they are just enjoying it...

Would be better if Ron could stop putting his hand in the air and back on the guitar neck...and if Keith stopped his bum bending notes soli. Rythm is the max he can do now 😢

The criticism of Keith is totally uncalled for. I don't see any slip in performance. They and he specifically sound great.
