Have to disagree actually. Yes, in theory you are correct but I sold my Quest 2 after a while since I do not like to be shielded from the world around me, and sometimes I would need to press a button on my keyboard for whatever reason which sucks and also the graphics settings need to be lowered compared to when I am playing on screen. Just too many downsides for me in DCS at the moment. TrackIR plus an ultrawide is where it is at for me for sure. But yeah, nothing beats the first time you realize the scale of the airplane and cockpit in VR. Proper WOW-moment.

One thing that helped me out in VR is that I have a cheap pilot kneeboard that I attached a wireless roller ball mouse to with two sided gorilla tape. The kneeboard has a clear plastic strip that goes across and the mouse is attached to that. Then I can Velcro/unvelcro to turn the mouse on or off at the bottom. Helps manipulate things in the cockpit beyond what I mapped in HOTAS.

I was a glider-pilot once, and indeed left turns are harder, because I didn't have as much room to move the stick left, because of my leg resting against the spoiler-handle. Left turns were safer though, because you had more controll if you needed to roll out of the turn.

The depth effect is from stereoscopic vision. In normal vision, your brain processes the slight differences between what your left eye sees and what your right eye sees, and gives you depth perception. VR mimics this, by showing you slightly different images in the field of view for each eye, and the brain picks up on that and gives you visual depth. The VR tech is doing something simple, the magic is happening in your brain.
    Brains are pretty amazing.

When I first got my vr head set, I instinctively kept reaching out to touch buttons and flip switches, so immersive, great for flying heliboppers. voice attack comes in very hand when flying in vr :), I have a mouse on my right which I use for in cockpit interactions, but there are hapto gloves available (to expensive for me though)

I've been waiting for this video for so long Caps first VR experience and it was worth the wait, I love watching peoples first experience with VR it's one of those things that you can describe for hours but until you actually try it you just cant understand how good it is. Caps reactions were brilliant would have loved to have seen his reaction to having a wing man fly right next to him and how the rig reacts to a carrier landing!
The headset isnt the best out there at the moment though the Pimax 8KX beats it but it's to expensive for most but the 4K per eye res and huge field of view takes Flight and race sims in VR to another level. As for the cockpit controls the track ball is a great way of getting round that and there are plenty of different ways to be able to use all your controls while in VR, the biggest one is getting used to having most of your stuff mapped to your HOTAS it takes a week or 2 but you learn where everything is after that by heart. Cant wait to get my DOF reality P6 rig in a month or 2.
Didnt realise Cap lived so close to me Scary thought that one

Didnt realise the Cap hadn’t tried VR. Its been integral to me for the last couple of years and is the closet thing to real flying in my opinion as you fan judge depth and perspective inside and outside the cockpit. When coupled with a full motion system- you are in suspension of belief territory.

Pimax is definitely a better VR experience than the other headsets. A coworker bought the 5K set and I was blown away. Being able to look with my eyes full left and right and barely see the edge of the screen was crazy. The sense of speed with that wide a field of view is perfect for racing and flight sims. When VR gets to 8K per eye and 220 fov then I'm diving in. But, until then, I'll use triple screen. For dog fights, VR is far better than multi screen setups, even in VR's current state.

Binocular vision Cap, it's what make ranging and sizing possible and what makes VR so capable. You are having two images projected into your eyes, your brain merges them and just like in real life, you can now tell how far away things are and how big. IMO this is the MAIN difference that truly changes flying in VR, not the so called "immersion"....

Went Rift S 18 months ago and could never go back to 2D now. Even with the lower resolution in VR, the immersion is 100x better.

Depth perception is coming from what is called "stereoscopic" view. The way animals (including humans) perceive depth is because our two eyes do NOT receive the same image (same hapens with stereo music). One same "reality" is received by your brain from two different points of view (angles), ie, each eye, at a distance one from the other. You can do a test, put one finger 20cm in front of your nose. One eye will see one side of the finger, and the other eye will see the other side of the same finger (two different images for one same reality). Then your brain composes the overal picture. We can say "the more different the images are, the closer the object is to you". Samely, the more similar both images are, the further away the object is.
Also, it is true that the closer the object (your finger in the previous example) is from your "nose", your pupils get closer together, giving that extra info to your brain. If you "project" a line that comes out from both of your eyes (like superman x-rays), the more parallel these rays are, the further away the object is. More info to your brain!
Just for the sake of curiosity, As a general rule (not always true) in order to know if an animal is a hunter or a pray, you just have to check their eyes position. Generaly speaking, if both eyes face forward (like humans, dogs, lions...), they have good depth perception, i.e. good hunters. If the eyes face sideways, then they tend to be prays (to see from where the risk is coming).
Now, DCS is calculating one scene , working out all phisics and so on, but the graphics card is rendering that scene from two different perspectives. These two images are rendered with parallel cameras that are about 65mm away one from each other. This is what is called "inter-pupilar distance" or IPD and can be adjusted in DCS, or Steam VR. Then, these two images are proyected separately in the VR headset screens. Your brain does the rest in the same way it does in real life. And also, this is one of the reasons for which VR FPS are usually lower. The graphics card is rendering two full resolution images at once, i.e. twice the amount of pixels (in case of Reverb, 4K x 2).
Same principle applies with 3d cinema, but in this case, both "different" images are superimposed (kind of). The "sunglasses" you wear are polarized glases with their axis shifted 90º. That "separates one image to the other", one for each eye. (This is not as precise as VR headsetds).
Something that drived me nuts at the beggining was the fact what when wearing my VR headset, since my brain thinks things are far away, I have to wear my prescription myopia glases! Incredible how technology can trick our brain!!!! (BTW, there are some nice prescription lenses adapters for VR headsets so i dont need to wear glasses any more. They are "built in the headset" now).
(Sorry for the long text and please excuse me if I made any mistake, either anatomical or language. I made some simplifications, and also English is not my mother tongue).

Cap, great video. Like has been said elsewhere, once I experienced flying in VR, I knew my 3x50" screen setup was headed for other uses. BTW, whilst I was in the USN flight program, they teach you to not struggle to keep your head vertical. Go with the attitude of the aircraft. This will greatly aid your ability to maintain spatial awareness. If the plane rolls, let your head roll with it. Plus, under actual G's, trying to keep your head vertical will wear out your neck muscles :)
Oh, and the 3D effect comes from binocular vision, and each lens/screen showing you a slightly different angle.

Depth is the 3D effect of having two frames with different angle to each other. But because it attached to your face it gets more immersive then normal 3D.

It's not a "3D effect". Just a stereoscopic pair. But yeah, this one is much closer to the face, while the huge lenses make it possible to look at the images from this close up, so you are ending up with a wider field of view.
Despite people calling a monitor "flat" and the stereo "3D", it's flat in both cases. You are just looking at the same scene from a slightly different angle with each eye.

The problem you would have flying vr would be recording a video. You can see the image on the screen is distorted due to the msaa mask and that is what gets recorded. So to create your usual video you have to replay the track on a conventional non-vr DCS (as I did for the Cuban missile crisis held cockpit scenes). That takes much more time than recording as you fly.

I never thought using the mouse was a big problem, but probably only because Im just sitting at my desk as Ive always done. If you have a real cockpit-seat as your battle station then it looks different I guess. How is that Reverb g2 looking and what is the performance impact of VR? Im currently running a ryzen 3700x and an 3060ti aswell, getting over 100fps in DCS at FHD, so I doubt performance would be an issue, lol.

I can't believe Cap hasn't used VR yet. I can't go back to the TrackIR. VR is just too good. Formation is just that much more fun. AAR is just that much more fun. Everything is just cooler. The only drawback is dogfighting which can be more difficult which is obviously connected to the lower resolution we get with an HMD on top of the fact that you have to, ya know, actually check your six. I know it's not for everyone, but for myself, I can't go back to the TrackIR.

    • @D00kerT

Still glad you got to try it out Cap and you're right, the 1 to 1 ratio makes everything that much more real. Nothing better than opening the canopy on the carrier after a trap and sort of "sitting" on the cockpit rail and watching everyone else come in and land. Or actually standing at the LSO pit.

Anyone thinking of trying VR for the first time please don't do it like this :P Makes for a fun video but if you want the best experience ease yourself in slowly. Hurtling around like that is going to give a lot of people sim sickness. You need to get your VR legs before being bounced around like that. You don't want your brain associating being in VR with feeling sick.
