  • Mounting Papers onto Canvas - Mixed Media Techniques, Episode 040 of Mixed Media Soul Sparks
    Adhering papers to a rigid surface is pretty straight forward, but things can get a bit tricky when trying to adhere papers to a stretched canvas. I share my tips, tricks and tools with you.
    Shop my favorite products: www.amazon.com/shop/sandradur...
    * SUPPLIES *
    I begin with a painted background and assortment of papers of various weights
    I am using a stepped handle palette knife and a flat synthetic brush
    The rigid surface is a Gessobord from Ampersand
    Golden Soft Gel Gloss
    Golden Regular Gel
    Golden Gloss Medium
    Block of wood, key card, or a spreading tool (I found on at the auto store and the other in the baking area of the craft store)
    If you only have one gel, you can make it work (Match the weight of the paper to your medium or gel)
    When applying the gel to the panel, I use the Soft Gel and easily use the palette knife to press the papers down smooth
    For the Gallery wrapped canvas I demonstrate using various tools: wood piece, sanding block, key card and a tool used for spreading Bondo, a material found in auto shops.
    The flat card slips between the canvas and the stretcher bar and allows you to press the paper into place and easily remove air bubbles and excess gel.
    Let dry, trim edges and add highlights and darks.

    I suggest using a really thick piece of cardboard from the packaging you get from your online supplies. That way you can cut a large piece to go under the stretched canvas for support while you're pressing the paper on the top. 👍🙂

    Thank you, Sandra! I get so confused on all the names for gels, mediums, etc.

      It can be confusing, especially between brands. I am glad I can shed a little light on it.

    Love this informative and inspiring for those who have not yet tried heavier weight papers onto canvas. Great tip for supporting back while getting pressure onto that first piece and explain the different gels. Your art is like a story it unfolds drawing us in with silent words, shapes and colours. The paper skins you showed us do they respond to being put onto canvas with gels?? Joy to watch and listen to, thank you.

      Wendy thank you for your beautiful description of my process. May I borrow your words? The paper skins should be mounted with a gel. Any weight, soft to regular will work and gloss will be the clearest. I often do everything with gloss and when finished I alter the sheen of the entire piece if I want.

      @@SandraDuranWilson you are most welcome to borrow my words, your wonderful video inspired them. Thank you for help on paper skins. I love how your work can whisper those shapes and colours onto a canvas where their story then begins. Never ending stories that every time you take a new look take us on a new path. Love your work. Thank you for your lovely reply.

      I believe both Golden and Liquitex have starter sets. Check online at Blicks or Jerry's. Enjoy and thanks for watching.

    This is very informative thank you, can you suggest a less expensive alternative to Golden as there are so many different gels in use? Thank you

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use Liquitex or DecoArt, but I prefer Golden.

    Excellent video. Thanks. I am an "oldie" but a "newbie" with this. Have one question. If I print on my printer a quotation on traciing paper or onion skin or something lightweight, & then tear the edges and put it on an acrylic painting (on canvas), will the edges of the paper disappear once I put gel medium on it? WOULD appreciate A REPLY, as I am clueless. I m hoping that a ragged torn edge would lay flat after the gel medium. Awaiting your reply & thanks for your time. pauli

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you really want the paper to disappear use silk tissue (Gampi tissue) or very thin rice paper. Tracing paper or vellum is too stiff.

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you want the ragged edge and the paper to be visible?

  • @abstractaddict
    @abstractaddict 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    thank you for this. what happens if you DO get a bubble, do you have any suggestions for getting to that spot again to add more gel?

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep a craft knife handy and cut a small slit. I can usually press down and get enough gel into the area.

      @@SandraDuranWilson I thought about that or somehow go into the back!!! hahaha. Thank you so much.

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you could go through the back if it's on paper but you wouldn't want to cut the canvas. See, great minds think alike.

    If I put collage paper on my canvas and varnish. Would I be able to remove the painting from the stretcher bars to ship and then re stretch the canvas back to the stretcher bars? Thanks

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Restretching canvas with collage papers can be tricky. If you have a framer restretch it, I think it would work.
