  • In this video, we will discuss how to store your Rolex. Click to shop our entire selection of pre-owned Rolex watches: www.bobswatche....
To learn more about storing your Rolex, the best solutions for watch storage, and the pros and cons for each, follow this link: www.bobswatche....
Whether you own one or multiple Rolex watches, there is the perfect storage solution for you. If you don’t wear your watch very often, a safe or watch winder might suffice. However, if you wear your Rolex daily, a nice display box might appeal to you more. To best decide which option works best for you, we must ask the question, how often do you wear your Rolex?
Suppose you own a few watches that you rotate through regularly or just one Rolex that you wear every day. In that case, a nice display case will do the job. There are many options available, including those with and without glass tops.
There are even display cases with temperature and humidity monitors for those who live in areas where these factors might affect your watch. If you own a vintage Rolex, its case might not be as water-resistant as it once was. Moisture may find its way into the case and possibly damage the movement. If so, a watch box with humidity control might be the perfect fit for you.
If your collection is too large to wear each Rolex regularly, a watch winder might better suit you. This option keeps your timepiece in motion when it isn’t on your wrist, thus, keeping the movement wound and ensuring that the date and time are always correct.
    Storage Options
The Original Box: Some collectors prefer to keep their Rolex in the original box. This option isn’t the best choice for a couple of reasons. First, the box your watch came in wasn’t designed for daily use. Opening and closing the box each time you wear your Rolex adds unnecessary wear. Also, many will argue that it’s best to keep the original box in excellent condition in the event that you choose to resell your Rolex. Lastly, the box takes up a lot of room compared to other options outlined in this video.
    Watch Box or Display Case
If you prefer to keep all your Rolexes in one place where you can easily view and access them, a watch box or display case might appeal to you. Cases with a glass top are popular as they allow the wearer to view all their watches at once without the hassle of opening multiple boxes, not to mention it also looks impressive when displayed on your desk or dresser. Furthermore, watch boxes can easily accommodate growing collections without taking up as much space as keeping them in the original box.
    Watch Rolls
Watch rolls are another excellent option to keep on hand, particularly for travel. They’re compact, soft, and can often hold several watches. While there are options available that feature a more rigid outer layer, watch rolls are not ideal for long-term storage. They don’t offer the same protection against wear and tear or humidity as a high-quality watch box or display case.
    Watch Winders
All modern Rolexes are powered by a Perpetual movement that is wound by the motion of the wearer’s wrist. By keeping the watch in motion, the time and date should not need to be reset, which is one reason why one might choose this option. Winders can consist of a watch box or display case with a timer and a motorized mechanism that moves the watch periodically.
If you have a larger collection, there are more expensive options on the market that accommodate multiple watches. Some watch winders even offer additional settings and might include finer materials.
If your collection includes watches with more complications, such as a Moonphase, a winder might be a good fit for your collection. While the day and date are simple enough to set, added functions may complicate the process. In that case, a winder is both practical and convenient.
    Safes
Perhaps, one of the most secure storage options is a safe or bank security box. Rolex watches are valuable. It makes sense that many collectors choose this option to protect their investments. While a deposit box is backed by the security of a bank, it isn’t as practical should you decide to wear your watch. An at-home safe is appealing because it offers the protection that many collectors seek with the convenience of having their collection at home.

To prevent the Rolex bracelet from scratching the Rolex caseback
maybe use a cushion or a microfiber cloth?

I have two Mozsly devices to manage the power reserve of 5 quality automatic watches. I tend to rotate the watches according to when they were last worn and by their power reserve. I switch on the winders for around 8-10 hrs a day only when I think necessary (not always the same watch naturally) and they keep all pieces ticking along very nicely. Super quiet, not silly money and very reliable, they can run off the mains, be linked together, or run on two AA batteries if you don't want the hassle of cables and I've found the latter easily last for over two months when operating them on the standard bi-directional 650TPD setting. They cannot overwind a decent watch - if that was the case and you wear an auto watch daily, it would break in no time. If you are going away for a long time and are not taking all your collection (who does lol), just let the watches wind down, stop and rest. it will do them no harm at all.

Any concerns on the direction of placement of the watch over long periods in storage? Does it matter if the face is place face down or on its side for years in storage?

    • @bobswatches

Hey Phif, this is a good point. Depending on the watch you may want to rotate a certain way depending on its movement and inside mechanics.

They say if it is really old and has not been serviced. You don't know the state of the seals, if they degraded, the watch isn't water/moisture resistant anymore.

Ok so I have the safe at home and I'm storing it long term. Should I take it out and wind it a couple times a year once every few months? Hypothetically speaking. Keeping in mind that the date and time would not need to be accurate, just so the mechanism inside doesn't stick

Never, ever buy a cheap watch winder. Their mechanisms are not only unreliable, noisy and ugly they have magnetic fields that can damage your watch (or at least make its timekeeping rate fail).
