    The engine looks very clean inside, this was very well maintained. Almost every T7 i have seen had tons of crap in the oilpan. Planning to do a B205E/B204i hybrid in a sleeper OG93. B205E block with B204i pistons and T5 headgasket. The car is pretty special, 02 base model made in Finland! Not many 9-3 were made here besides the Viggen and cabriolet. Its a silver 5-door with a grey interior, looks like a old mans grocery getter! These videos will be useful when i get around doing the engine build!

    Hej Jonas.
    My method for the hydraulic tappets is as follows:
    1. I press each one several times to get rid of as much old oil as possible.
    2. I soak them in a cleaning agent for 24 hours. I place them on the side while the small hole for the oil intake points up.
    3. I press them again several times to get the cleaning agent out.
    4. I prime them with oil. I put them upside down in oil, and press them several times slowly. Each press will show air bubbles, and when releasing the tappet sucks oil inside.
    I saw that you have NE (Nippon Europe) piston rings on the work bench. I have a VERY BAD experience with this brand when it comes to T5 pistons. My supplier sold me 2 sets. One failed after starting the engine, and before even rolling the car out of the lift, and the second set failed after around 1000 km. I stick to Goetze or Mahle piston rings (So far I built around 150 T5 and T7 engines, and many 2 Takt V4, B and H engines).
    The English term for preparing the cylinder bores is "honing".
    Happy new year and Happy SAABing.

      Thanks for all tips 👌
      I have used these piston rings for The 4 T5 builds i have done, none of them has failed so far. And this is what speedparts has sold for years, If they were that bad as you say than wouldnt Even exsist anymore... 150 engines is impresive 💪

    Hello, Jonas. Great video again, as usual You`ve done. About that balance chain abort: someone have told it makes vibrations to engine as You told. In my SAAB we made the lighter flywheel, about 2,5 kg. I truly think that lower vibrations on my car. And I speak about 400 hp here .And of course we did it propely by welding the oilholes closed. Happy New Year to You, Jonas.

    Using the wheel grinder to adjust gap. Primitive & cheap, but it works. I guess I just under estimated the ring toughness to grinding

    I am guessing that deleting the balance shafts will act as if the flywheel was lightened.
    If this is done together with a lighter flywheel, more top rpm cams and a more crippy clutch, you may need to up the idle a bit to keep it running when parking or other low speed things, because the rotating mass is smaller then before.

    • @JonasKakarikas
      @JonasKakarikas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct my friend 👌 will do some custom timing to the cams as well 👍

    • @vank4205
      @vank4205 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I don't remenber bad, the stock idle is 825 rpm. I know people that install a lightened flywheel and b234i intake cams and up the idle to 875 or 900 rpm.
      So anyway the engine is not so lightened as a rally or track car that necessarily need up the idle a lot.
      Possibility the idle will can be a bit less of the cold start idle. In my opinion, is not a bad idle and permit use the car as daily car yet.

    • @larsjrgensen5975
      @larsjrgensen5975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vank4205 I drive a Automatic now, but i am just remembering from my 9-3 T5, i felt like it had a fairly light flywheel already, reacted quick to throttle and the low idle when warm needed some throttle, if the road was not perfect flat.
      So if someone does everything at once and gets one of those light multiplate clutches it could end up being a bit annoying.
      The 2.3 should have less of a problem, and i think the 9-5 has a different flywheel then 9-3, so you might be right, that it would be fine enough to daily.

    Enjoy your excellent videos for the SAAB upgrades. I rebuilt my OG93 one year ago with JE Pistons and deleted balance shafts. The most careful work was grinding the piston rings by hand. Each compression ring took 50 turns; this resulted in almost zero blow by and I would like to know if you grind the rings, depending on boost, or just install them from the box??

    • @JonasKakarikas

Köpte en billig 9-5 2,3 biopower 2008 för ett år sedan som jag har fixat med och har nu som hobbybil. 9-5 är nog det mesta bil man kan få för pengar idag då det finns hur många som helst och priserna är otroligt låga. Jonas, what's Your opinion about deleting balance shafts in these engines? I'm not particulary asking about tuning reasons. My engine needed to be taken out due to oval cylinders (heavy oil consumption) and many people here say that I should remove balance shafts on this occasion as well. The quite common opinion is that they help to seize the engine over time, and that's the reason why these engines have quite bad opinion due to short longevity. Some kind of factory defect? Is it somehow confirmed, what do You think of it in Sweden?

    • @JonasKakarikas
