I've been balling yarn that way for years and I don't even knit or crochet. Growing up my mother crocheted and I would end up balling her skeins for her. Now I do it for my wife. They love the technique and say the ball always unroll wonderfully. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
Hi Rob, so you're one of those highly sought after men trained in the art of proper yarn rolling, eh? LOL Your wife is one lucky lady :) Thank you for watching!
I agree with Jayda. Your wife had to be thrilled when she found out you would wind yarn for your mom. That is a big time saver. Which gives your wife more crochet time.
This is how I've been doing it too. While some may think this video wasn't necessary (there are some jealous haters further down in the comments), I think it was totally worth the time it took to make it. There are some newbie crocheters and knitters who don't know how to do this simple technique (turning a skein into a ball) and that's okay. Who are we to judge. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video Jayda!!
This is a much better method than many I have seen on youtube ! She uses her thumb / fingers to ensure the yarn is not tight / stretched. Numerous other TH-camrs are not at all bothered about the condition of the yarn. I'm a complete beginner to knitting and am watching lots of videos to help me be prepared for things to come. Jayda InStitches - thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing your knowledge with everyone. 💐
You're right we all know how to wrap a ball of yarn but this method is going to be so much better than the ball of yarn you were describing what we don't want. Exactly what I was doing.🫣Thank you for doing this tutorial. I appreciate it.😊
+rebecca sabet I must agree with you, entirely. I often find myself winding balls out of slightly loosened skeins and the process brings my back down to earth!
Thank you for this. Someone just asked me "how do you ball yarn" and even tho I've been doing it for 40 years I couldn't explain how. Jayda saves the day!
My husband gave me a yarn bowl for Christmas. I did not know how to turn a skein of yarn into a ball until I watched this video. I found it extremely helpful. It is totally worth taking the time to roll your yarn into a ball and use a yarn bowl. My tension improved immediately ! My crocheting goes much smoother now and my stitches look consistent and beautiful . I am making a blanket for my sister. Thank you Jada!
Legit just found this IN 2018!!!! And man oh man did it just save my LIFE!! I was crocheting with my normal skein and was getting frustrated with trying to unroll it while crocheting and I finally said I need this in a ball and here was your video and it quickly and effectively taught me how to make the rest of my skein into a ball!! So thank you!!
Thank you for your video on rolling a Ball of Yarn. I have been so frustrated with yanking my yarns. I thought I was the ONLY ONE that had that problem....Thanx.....Cindy
What an excellent method. I will work at mastering this, especially moving the yarn around while rolliing in a circle!!! Thank you. I was actually considering buying a yarn winder. Maybe not after seeing this method.
Thank you so much for this! Simple, concise and straight to the point! I just purchased some yarn for a new project and the first thing I typed in was “how to prepare yarn for crocheting” and found this! Thank you thank you! New subscriber!!!
As a beginner , I totally messed up my yarn looking for the center pull. I had yarn all over the house 🤦🏻♀️. I just did your technique with my yarn ! Thank you so so much !! I have learned so much from you , I really appreciate all the help with the basic skills! There is no one to call to help me . So I just load up the tv and learn from you ! Much love from Mississippi 💆♀️
I’m new to crochet, did it a little when i was younger. Loving this, gonna save it for when my huge skein is starting to get messy. But it looks so good to just do in general, so once i do it my first time i may do it forever! Thank you 😊
I want to learn how to crochet and I have been watching tutorials. I am getting my yarn as soon as the mail gets here. Thank you for this video. I will use this to roll my skeins into a ball. :)
Hello. Thank you for the training. I was having problems with my skeins when. They get loose towards the end and I knew how to roll some, but not into a ball. I appreciate your help on this!
I’m just starting to crochet. As I’ve been practicing, making my way through my skien of yarn, I noticed how floppy and messy it gets! I’ve never made it this far so I wasn’t aware. I’ll definitely be giving this a try! Thank you for the helpful tip!! 🥰🧶
I drop my skein into the paper-recycling plastic trashcan that sits next to my desk: nothing but nice clean (used) paper in there! Loved the video! My first ball I wound WAY too tight! (Also, I use the paper wrapper from the skein, fold and wad it up, and use it as the core of the ball... that way I always know where the details about that yarn are and the last piece of yarn is not all kinked.)
Yay! Thanks, my ball is perfect! I saved a vase in which I received a fruit bouquet (deep) and it is perfect for my yarn. Great tips! Sandraxo~ today-temp high 64 degrees here :))
Nice video, even when i'm seeking a lesson I get bored but I found myself swaying patiently to the music you subtly tossed in. Every bit of instruction was useful and you talked fluidly. Thumbs up!
I love your tips and was also wondering if you need an idea I would love to see you make a dream catcher or a mandala that can be turned into a dream catcher?
Is it better to roll the left over yarn into that kind of a ball, or a center pull ball of yarn? Because I do the center pull ball of yarn, but the comment you made about the tension makes sense
Hi Denise, I say, whatever ball works for you is the best one! I find this quick to do, and I've done it this way for so long that it's my go-to winding technique :)
Is there a tutorial for the heart hanging in the background on the left side of the 📹 video? It would be over your right shoulder Jayda. And thank you for this quick tip, it helped me a lot! 🦄🌝🤠😍🐵
Hi Abby! I had to go looking for that heart * giggle * we don't have a tutorial on that, but thank you for the suggestion! Actually, 2 of our granny hearts sewn together and crocheted together (with a little picot patter) work be about the same thing! th-cam.com/video/qhJqxyQRG4Y/w-d-xo.html
I've never seen this method of winding yarn. I've been using a ball winder for years to wind yarn into center pull cakes. I love winding yarn on that thing, and pulling from the center means I don't have to worry about the yarn bouncing around.
Hi Anne, I'm what you call the low-tech yarn winder type LOL I usually put my balls of yarn into a bowl and that keeps the little bouncing balls from going anywhere :)
If you have to let the ball roll around, I find putting it in a plastic bag and hanging the bag off your arm (for me my left) it rolls around in the bag.
Someone left a few things of yarn at my house and my cats have unraveled them all. I was just curious how to roll a ball of yarn. I suppose it’s easier when it’s not strung through 3 rooms and two cats think you are doing it for their enjoyment. It’s works great though.
Hi Jennifer! I usually untwist them, so the large circle is obviously, then put it over the back of a kitchen chair (or something equally as wide) and wind from there :)
My mother showed me a method that still pulls out from the middle, you start the way you did, but only over two fingers and you keep the end out, when you have about 20-30 winds you put your thumb in the centre and keep winding around your thumb, holding a finger between the ball and the wool being wrapped around to stop it begins too tight. Does that make sense? I rewind every now and again to keep the ball tidy.
Hi Pat, there are many ways to reroll a ball of yarn, and any that can pull from the middle are great! I use a yarn bowl so my little ball just bounces harmlessly around inside it, so it luckily doesn't matter what end it's unraveling from!
So I have a big skein of yarn... 861 yards to be exact. How big should I roll my first ball? Cause I’m sure I can’t possibly roll it all into one ball. I most likely have to get several easy to manage balls out of this, am I right?
Hi! If it can unravel from the middle, you shouldn't have to rewind it until you've used up some of the skein and you want to store it. By that point, it should be much smaller and easier to wind up :)
Well, yeah. But then I come to a tangle in the skein itself and spend half my life trying to untangle it before I can even begin to think about rolling the yarn into a ball. Any suggestions?
Hi! If you can unwind your skein (or use the yarn directly from it) using the end that's on the inside, find it and start with that. Otherwise, if you're unwinding it from the outside, then unwind the whole thing around 2 far points (like around the back of a kitchen chair for example). This will help keep tangles from happening and you can rewind it into a more useable ball!
I've always balled my yarn, my mother thinks it puts stress on the yarn to do so, but I still do it, it's just easier for me to work from a ball than a skein
I'VE HELPED MY MOM BALL HER YARN BUT SHE, SOMEHOW, WOULD UNDO THE WHOLE SKEIN SO I WOULD HOLD MY HANDS APART WITH THE YARN AROUND IT WHILE SHE WOULD WIND THE BALL. I JUST SET THE SKEIN IN A PLASTIC COFFEE CAN AND WIND INTO A BALL THEN USE THE CAN FOR THE BALL. I LIKE DOING THE YARN YOUR WAY, MY WAY. LOL
lymorale Great question! If the yarn is special to me, or I think I'll need the label information for later, I generally tie the end of the yarn through a few strands and safety pin the label to it. OR I put it in a zip lock bag and tape the label to the bag!
Chilipepr Sandi Hi Sandi! I haven''t been to California yet...and I just bet it's lovely there right now! With the wind chill today, it's minus 30 degrees Celsius!
To make mine, i started like that, then i cut the end. Then i took a piece and wrapped it around and tied both wnds. And i just kept doing that. Is that cheating?
Ty but it’s to messy that way. So I cut a small little square of a cardboard and cut triangle squares in between all four middle sides. And wrap in around in that
Hi Hope, you can use this winding technique for any yarn weight or fiber. The trick is to wind around your fingers for the first while, then slide it off so your yarn isn't held taunt (or stretched out) while it's wound up in a ball.
Denise Kemp No problem, Denise :) Sometimes I like to re-wind all my new skeins into balls just so they move around easier when I'm crocheting...doesn't slow me down as much! (Sometimes I get going pretty fast LOL)
I find that it builds up on one side or another too and ends up onion shaped for a bit. If you keep moving the ball around, the shape usually rounds out. She explains it in the video at some point (how to keep it rounded and not oval).
Jayda InStitches - I've noticed that many TH-camrs hold some of the first piece of yarn before they start making the ball. Basically creating the ball so that the yarn feeds out from the middle. Can you please tell me the reason that you like the yarn to be fed from the outside ? *_H A P P Y N E W Y E A R E V E R Y O N E !_* 🙏🏼 💐 😁
Hi! If you roll a ball like I do here, you can place it in a bowl as you work with it. It will roll around in the bowl and not bounce around :) This is also handy if you have knots in your yarn, it unravels a little easier from the outside in this case.

I find the winding to be kinda zen in itself. Just finished frogging a project that didnt turn out and i feel very calm and relaxed now.

kirsten marr Awesome! It's a little detail, but it can be a helpful (and tidy!) one :)
I did the same thing all directions
Thank you so much! Your demo and explanation were just what I needed! Can’t wait to give it a try. 😀

Amazing, and you make it so simple Jayda. Even though I have a yarn winder will use this method too. 😍😍
Hi Marion! I don't have one of those (unless you count my husband * giggle *)
I did it with my yarns I’m using for my project. Works for me!!!! No tangled mess. Plus it’s a hard ball lol
Thank you!! I'm starting out fresh and this was very helpful!
We're so happy to hear that! Thank you for watching 😊
Never considered the skein of yarn could effect tension! Thank you! 🐾🍁🍂

Hi Linda, thank you! And thank you for watching :)
I wrap my skeins of yarn into a ball before starting a project on to a Styrofoam ball to keep it round also some times I wrap it around the labels.
LIFE SAVER!!
thank you so much for this!
Awesome! Thank you for this!!!! Going to do this,🥰
BEAUTIFUL!!!

LOL, yes, cats have a particularly unique skill at super-tangling yarn.
Thank youuuu☺😊❤
Bonjour vous êtes super et merci pour les tuto vous êtes adorable 👍💕
i love how it looks like an onion in the bowl at the end!
Ha! It does!
Great video, thank you. How do you unravel twisted skeins? Oops, I believe they're called Hanks.
Hi Jennifer! I usually untwist them, so the large circle is obviously, then put it over the back of a kitchen chair (or something equally as wide) and wind from there :)
I love watching your videos, in the background of this video you have a Mario quilt...do you have the pattern, I have been searching for ever for it

I wrap my yarn. On a Christmas. Light. Holder on the end that is easy way to get it off. I have over. 100 things of yarn
i luv her!!! she's so charming hehe
LOL
You’re so cute ☺️ Love your videos and tips.
Hi Julie! Thank you for watching :)
Do you label the ball and how do you keep the label attached, for later use?
lymorale Great question! If the yarn is special to me, or I think I'll need the label information for later, I generally tie the end of the yarn through a few strands and safety pin the label to it. OR I put it in a zip lock bag and tape the label to the bag!
My ball of yarn looks like an onion.* giggle * but it's still good looking:)
LOL Mine usually look like gnarly potatoes for a while but they usually work themselves into balls eventually!
to me it looks like a coconut 🥥 ?
I'm going to watch while I wind :) .... When did you come visit us in California? Hugs from Sacramento xo~
Chilipepr Sandi Hi Sandi! I haven''t been to California yet...and I just bet it's lovely there right now! With the wind chill today, it's minus 30 degrees Celsius!
Thank you 🙏
I done ✅ it, “yeah”, and thanks again.
To make mine, i started like that, then i cut the end. Then i took a piece and wrapped it around and tied both wnds. And i just kept doing that. Is that cheating?
Totally but me making a head for a voodoo doll 😶
thanks :)
Ty but it’s to messy that way. So I cut a small little square of a cardboard and cut triangle squares in between all four middle sides. And wrap in around in that
Can you do this with bernat baby blanket yarn
Hi Hope, you can use this winding technique for any yarn weight or fiber. The trick is to wind around your fingers for the first while, then slide it off so your yarn isn't held taunt (or stretched out) while it's wound up in a ball.
I'm currently learning The Bohr Model and the Quantum Mechanical in Chemistry and i saw this link in the PowerPoint and im soooooooo lost.
LOL, does winding yarn by hand somehow use a Quantum Mechanical model?
I do that all the time but I was wondering how to get it circular ty
Denise Kemp No problem, Denise :) Sometimes I like to re-wind all my new skeins into balls just so they move around easier when I'm crocheting...doesn't slow me down as much! (Sometimes I get going pretty fast LOL)
I find that it builds up on one side or another too and ends up onion shaped for a bit. If you keep moving the ball around, the shape usually rounds out. She explains it in the video at some point (how to keep it rounded and not oval).

ssreltd111 That is a super idea!
Yes but how do you find and grab end of yarn?
She has a video that shows you, go to her channel. Not sure how you would look it up though.
My wife walked in on me right at the line "And this is how I roll my balls"... I got a very judgmental look.
I do this to lol.
What did you put the skein on?
Hi Rosemarie, there is nothing inside the skein! The ball makes itself once you pull the wraps off your fingers and keep wrapping :)
💗🌸💗🌸💗
Ooops….I spelled your name wrong! Sorry Jayda :)
Uhhh i think those closed captions at the beginning of the video need to be fixed😂😂
My dog ran around with my yarn and completely undid the ball
As long as there weren't any knots, your pup did you a favour :D
Jayda InStitches there are some two or three rips in the yarn😂
