Dear Fiber Spider, the last hank of yarn I bought (beautiful stuff) I didn’t know how to work with it and I spent eight hours untangling it. Thank you so much for showing me how to do this.

Thank you Fiber Spider! I might add another tip I saw a while back that's handy when you're balling up yarn. To make it a center-pull ball, take the beginning strand and hold it against a wooden spoon handle. Wind the yarn around the spoon handle, making sure you keep the beginning of strand held against the handle as you wind. When finished, you have a great center-pull ball of yarn. I even do this with little scraps of yarn so they're balled up and ready to use for another project. Thanks again. I always love your tutorials!!♡

You saved me a ton of misery! I had three Hanks of fine crochet thread. The first one didn't go well at all and ended up in the trash. After watching your video, the second went very smooth and I was able to make three cakes from it. I still have another one but it is no longer antagonizing me from its' place in my yarn cabinet. Adapt and overcome!!! Thank you soooo much!

So happy I found this. I recently bought a hank and didn’t want to invest in a winder or wood thing just for 4 hanks. I was the unwilling participant for my moms yarn , use to sit in floor , mom on couch and I held the hank as you said. Memories 🎼🎶

Spent about two and a half hours last night struggling with my new, beautiful, hand-dyed Merino yarn, stressed out of my mind as it tightened into seemingly unmanageable tangles, and all I needed was a chair, LOL. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • @sandrapolichino8806

Thanks for this. I use a chair as well. I don't have a lot of space for gadgets so I use what's available. I also learned how to make a center pull ... thumb ball. I can make it to look like yarn cakes. I love yarn and I love fiddling with it. Making a center pull thumb ball is, to me, as fun as knitting and crocheting. I also crocheted a couple of small baskets to hold yarn balls that are not center pull ones to keep them from rolling around. Easy to store and washable. Love you ... love your voice ... love your vids. Bless you all over !!!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a few hanks of yarn that I received in a monthly yarn box. They've been stored away because I thought I'd need to purchase all sorts of contraptions in order to wind them into balls. Your method is perfect for me as I also don't have a human willing to hold a yarn hank upright for hours on end! 😏😉 This video is super beneficial! Thanks again!!

Thank you for posting this!! I had to cut my last hank into several pieces making about 4 small balls instead of one big one 😆 on a side note could you please make a video showing how to downsize things to a smaller scale? I love your hat patterns but I cannot figure out how to adapt them to a smaller size for preemie or newborns and still have them look right!! I would eventually like to make some hats to donate to my local hospital NICU!! Thanks so much for all of your videos I have found several of them to be very helpful in this learning process 😊

I love you tutorials. I followed one to the letter and wowed my group making lap afghans for the American Cancer Society to give to centers for patients receiving chemo treatments. On winding hands, I have two things to add. 1. I use two chairs back to back and position them so the yarn is closer to the top of the yarn. 2. I usually wind around the wrapper of the yarn and then fold the paper up for more stability AND I wind over one finger so the yarn is not pulled to tight and not lose any of the “stretch ability” than may have put in during the making of the yarn. I am an older knitter, from before the advent of synthetics, so this is advice is especially important when working with wools. Keep up the goof fun work!

Hello fiber spider , l haven’t seen your videos in a few years, l followed you about 4 or five years ago l made several of your beautiful shawls l think it was , and my Dutch grandmother from Amsterdam Holland use to work her yarn into a ball by putting the wool around a chair or she would have me or one of my brothers stand there with the yarn around hands spread out and it would get a little tiring sometimes lol , we got to visit for the first time our Dutch grandmother n grandfather, uncles aunts and cousins back in approximately 1958-1961,parents were actually considering moving to Holland, so we were there longer then expected but they decided against it after realizing that my dad would never be able to learn the language and him being a carpenter n roofer most of his life ‘we returned home to the states but what a wonderful experience as children in that era to get to see another country where they grow the most beautiful tulips and make the most fantastic wooden😮😮 shoes, l also learned the Dutch language and went to school there for a year and so did my brothers boy what fun l had there and being from Florida l got to see snow for the first time the canals would freeze up and everyone would be ice skating we lived in a 4th floor apartment building right across the street from canals l could sit in my bedroom and watch the races they would have and even got to see the Queen of go by in a boat my daddy hung out the window to capture a picture of the queen it was Queen Beatrice l think if my memory serves nme right she was also with her husband and four daughters riding thro Amsterdam, l could be mistaken about the Queen it could have been Willameana spelling could be wrong too thank you for sharing this fiber Spider🙏❤️

Have hung the hank over both arms of a chair like a captain's chair or office chair. I prefer center pull balls so I tuck a short length inside my watch strap and wind a ball maintaining that centre pull using my stationery watch-strapped left hand with the right hand doing the winding. Love the results. Thanks for the lovely video.

I do have a table top yarn winder & a travel nostepinne for winding cakes from skeins *but* I don’t have a yarn swift & had zero interest in buying another thing or giving it space in my home. I had no idea what I was going to do with these 🤬 hanks but when you find the right yarn… Honestly the simplest solution is always the best one. Thank you 🙏🏼

It worked just fine but I have 2 plates & 16 screws in my dominate arm so it was just way too tiring on me. So I splurged & got the Boys electric yarn winder😍😍😍. I love buying new yarn just to use it lol. Either one will change your yarn life my dear friend and leave you with more free time 😉. Thanks for this hack❤😘

Winding tip - don't wind too tight, it will stretch your yarn if it's a natural fiber. Also, some skeins/hanks are tied off with the ends, so be extra careful when you untie them. I have gotten really good at doing a center pull ball around my thumb and I can wind it by hand pretty darn quick.

I prefer to use a yarn swift to neatly hold my hank of yarn I'm winding up. I have one that can sit on the floor, or hang on the wall. My swift isn't a umbrella style, it's more along the Amish style, with 2 crossed arms, and pegs that fit into holes, depending on the size of the hank of yarn. It stores quite compactly when it's not in use.
