    Wonderful points . We are first time - mini Aussie owner of our sweet 11 yr old. We’ve had her since she was 5 and her owner passed. She may be getting older but she loves her jobs, inside and outside the house and her especially long walks in the morning and evening by a lake with her family where she keeps us safe and alerts us to squirrels being close:). She is an excellent herder of lizards from getting in the home too. She is content to lay peacefully by us most evenings. I have learned so much from your channel about this amazing breed and dogs in general . Thank you! Please keep them coming .

      Hi @90Stay, Thanks so much for sharing your experience with your little Aussie. Isn't it amazing how they keep their energy and spirit as they age? Also, I am so glad you are enjoying the channel!

    Great video. We have a border collie and we sure try to fulfill his needs by daily bike rides in the woods, hiking, hide and seek and yard play. We try our best for little Goose

    Great information as always, great comments/tips from people also!! Love all your pups, Matt is super cute. Helping at the shelter & trying to educate people it's the main reason dogs are returned & it's not their fault. We even started taking 2 neighbor dogs when we walk, they were bored. Have a great week!

    I bought a herding ball for my toy Aussie and he will wear himself out with that thing. EVERYDAY I make sure he has a "job" even if it is just a treat puzzle. I did have to buy the most difficult puzzle though because he doesn't give up and will work forever to figure it out!

      Hi Mary, Your comment made me chuckle. It is soooo fun to watch an aussie with a herding ball and boy do they love it! Thanks for watching.

    Balancing exactly what you said is so hard....the looks/size/coat, etc of getting a dog vs. the true needs of the breed. Used to travel to Raleigh all the time as a Sales Exec w/IBM (RTP and they have a customer briefing center)....LOVED LOVED going to The Angus Barn on every trip, took customers there. Miss that place!

      Hi Randy, Thanks for your comment. Most of my goose control contracts are in RTP. Been doing that with my BC's for over 20 years. If you have not been here in awhile you would not believe the population explosion going on here. Thanks for your comment. Hey from Mayberry!

    My toy Aussies absolute favorite thing is fetch, but before he gets to chase the ball, he has to do a command/trick or a “stay & release”. He also loves to run while I bike ( I always go at his pace and connect him to a harness with a side clip ) He’s a wonderful companion!

    my dog is a total mutt but I do know his mixes which are a basenji, shi-tsu, poodle, and yorkie. his favorite thing to do is flush birds in parks and its the only time ive actually seen him jump after something. he also loves to go on runs. his mixes pretty much tell me he is a total hunter. even on walks he has his nose to the ground but also uses his eyes to observe areas.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Interesting! I raised and showed Basenjis way back when. Yes, they hunt with their eyes first, then nose but mostly a sight hound. Poodle, bird hunter water retriever, yorkie, terrier, rat hunter/killer. What a fun mix and you did your homework so you know how to entertain your dog! Thanks for your comment.

    This is no bs advice folks! Just found the channel.
    My dog is not an aussie. He's a pit bull from fighting bloodlines. Rescue pit bulls, and you never know what you're going to get.
    My dog is in the various "advanced" classes in the dog training organization we've belonged to for 2 years (he's 2.75 now). The other dogs in those classes are predictable: several Australian dogs, a few goldens, a Doberman, a shepherd. The smart ones, in other words.
    How did the bat guano crazy pit bull get involved? He was, from birth, like a homicidal malinois, with a little less gas in the tank.
    We trained him using his drive. It's a ton of work. Swimming twice a day in the spring, summer and early fall, hiking a bunch all year round. But that's now. Early days was a lot of very structured walking, food luring games, structured roughhousing in fact--a good way to bake in an "off switch". It's like a kid with adhd--in fact, your shepherd dogs are too, they don't want to sit around.
    Ultimately, if you have a real dog with real drive, you must leverage that drive in the training. It's hit and miss because you have to find the dog's wheelhouse, but when it clicks, the dog doesn't even think he's "training." The dog just evolves before your eyes.
    Obviously, if you have reactivity or aggression issues, those have to be carefully socialized out. Dog parks aren't socialization for dogs with a fighting spirit; in that case it must be much more structured and cautious. But it's still doable.
    If a game dog can do it, any dog can.
    One of our trainers has an aussie...I love that dog!

      I need to come up with a prize for best comment ever. If I do you will get it. The captain of our flyball team ( I don't do flyball any more but did for 14 years) ran a Pit. I had the pleasure of running him once. His reward for going to get the ball and bringing it back at Mach Speed was hitting a tiny floppy frisbee you held out for him and when he hit it your arm just about came off. If you have seen flyball it is just a lot of dogs in very high drive going 110%. A very enticing situation for a Pit that has not had his drives channeled properly. GOOD ON YOU for finding your lucky dog's wheelhouse. I need to do a video called finding your dog's wheelhouse.

    Nice video! You’re completely right, we need to fulfill their needs as well. It can’t just be a walk, they need much more exercise. I’m definitely going to keep that in mind.
    Would love to see what are your thoughts and advice to get dog to get along with cats. We have a 5 month Samoyed and took her to a train and board, Which helped a lot, but she still reactive when she sees the cats move.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did this video on chasing cats th-cam.com/video/mwLn2FGR0Hs/w-d-xo.html
      That might help. You have a 5 month old so if it seems more playful than predatory she is probably looking for a playmate. No other puppy around so wants to play with the cats. Puppies need a playmate and tons of playtime. Structured training is not fulfilling that drive. It is a DRIVE so here are options. You play with her a ton, tug, chase games, and/or find a GOOD doggy daycare where she can play with other puppies 2-3 times a week OR find a friend with a playful safe dog/puppy and get them together often. I never recommend board and train personally. I am against that. I have been asked to work for a board and train many times and i won't do it. Never ever let someone else train your dog out of your sight. I hope this helps you and your beautiful Sammy. Look at her breed history, Herding, Hunting, Protection, Sledding. She will need tons of interactive training, and plenty of exercise. She is not just a pretty face. (-:

    This is why I can''t get a dog now due to my inability to walk. I'm thinking that maybe, I can get an older, calmer companion dog, mmmaybe?

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Please watch this video about adopting an adult dog:
      th-cam.com/video/A01e-x71mOo/w-d-xo.html I have a gal who has two of mine and she doesn't walk. If you mean can't walk at all or can't go for a walk I am not clear on that. The two entertain each other and she takes them in the yard several times a day and throws a ball to burn off steam. An older dog might be a good choice if you only want one. But again, the breed is important as my 11 year old aussie is still a pistol. Find a nice "companion lap dog" breed and contact breeders and see if they have any nice retired adults that are already house trained. Many are thrilled to find homes for their retired breeding dogs. Myself included.

  • @yogiyoda
    @yogiyoda 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I volunteer walking dogs at the local pound and it's best to judge adult dogs by who they are and not necessarily what their breed is. Most Labs like to fetch but not all. Best to try different activities with each dog and see what they like. Some of the best fetchers and swimmers have actually been pitties. But of course many pitties could care less about fetch and swimming. My rescue pittie is mostly APBT but she acts like a cattle dog. She looks like a pitbull but wants to herd and gently nip things especially a group of bikes. Got her DNA test done and she's 12% cattle dog but you would never know from just looking at her

    Hello, I have a question about spaying and future health issues
    I do not want my dog to have a littler and I am considering spaying because people are saying she can develop cancer. She is 4 years old toy Aussie and I am worried about her developing pyometra.
    What would you recommend?

    • @dreamgaits
