My husband went to the original location in 1976 when he was 19 years old. They were complete including windshields. No spray paint. Watching you every week is something we share ❤
I'm 70 presently. I was a Fine art sculptor and Printmaker, in 1974. That was still during the "POP ART" era of art making. I incorporated Cadillac imagery in my silk screen prints and sculptures. I created an all foam rubber, 1953 Cadillac, that converted into a chair with an ottoman. It wasn't a full length Caddy. It was the front end, and grill, and front windshield, then it tapered back. The engine compartment and hood was removable and became the ottoman (or foot stool). You sat in the place where the engine would have been. It was constructed of 5 inch thick layers of foam rubber, cut precisely with a band saw, and glued together. It won awards and recognition for me, way back then.
I remember going there in 6th grade on a field trip when we lived in White Deer, Texas for about a year. He used to buy a new one, drive it for a year, and plant them in the ground. The owner of the land was a millionaire who owned radio stations and was involved in oil. This is what our teacher said in 1977...so, what the story is? A mix of fact and fiction after all these decades. I'm 59 now and back then, they were new cars and no spray paint on any of them. We had a sack lunch, back on the school bus and back to White Deer, Tejas.......That's my story from being there in 6th grade. 1977
disappointing that a teacher would instruct a fallacy. It has always been a well know art project, done as a single statement, not a one year at a time curious assembly of a rich man's cast offs.
My wife and I visited Cadillac Ranch in September 2020 on a road trip from Denver, CO to Dallas, TX, and back through Oklahoma, Kansas, and back to Denver. We were on a geocaching road trip to find some of the oldest in a few states. It was a fun road trip.
I wonder if you know that your videos have saved people and improved their quality of life? I hope you do!! Your videos saved me through a few months of insomnia a few years back. Unfortunately, true story. 🥴 I’ve probably already typed this on older vids. Buuuuutttttt. For reals. Fight or flight is no joke!!Rest and digest is what I hope for you and your family and TH-cam viewers. Thankyou ✌️♥️🌍🦋
I saw these shortly after they were planted..My wife and I took a motorcycle road trip with a friend and his wife from Dallas, TX to the Coors Brewery in Golden CO then on to Estes Park...I had moved from Harleys to a 1973 Kawasaki 903 Z1. Much faster and smoother ride and no breakdowns or parts falling off. My friend had moved from a Triumph Bonneville to a new Harley...Lots of stops for us picking up parts from his bike...I digress, Anyway we passed the Cadillac Ranch, turned back and took a look...No spray paint at the time...I'm now an 80 year old man reliving a lot of good memories...BTW I enjoy ALL your videos....wm
70 year old, here!....I was a professional exhibiting Artist in 1974, working in the "POP ART" style. Pop artist's incorporated things from contemporary life. Cadillac Ranch was an example of that style. I too remember seeing this "installation", in art books published in 1974 & ever since. Ant Farm was a known entity too,... and was responsible for all sorts of Avant Gard, art, at the time. Performance Art, too. I used a 1953 Caddy in my sculptures, and silk screen printed images, in 1974, too. Way before this installation had become so well known.
I was born in Amarillo in 1965 and visited the Cadillac Ranch in the late 70's and early 80's. There was no spray paint on them at the time, but vandals had kicked in the roofs on all of the cars. The Stanley Marsh story is creepy: He apparently hired a group of teen boys to go around town and place fake but amusing road signs. It was from among that group he found a few to prey upon.
Very interesting.... Couldn't help but mention polluting the earth by throwing empty cans all over the place. It's a shame. You would think that whoever goes in there and picks up all the cans would put a garbage can for people to put all the empty spray cans in. Or, people would just have a decency to simply take their trash with them. But I guess not. Just like the Mylar balloons polluting the beautiful scenery.
We visited there in '75. There was not a LICK of graffiti. Revisiting more recently, every square inch was covered with spray paint. Parts and swatches of tire rubber had became souvenirs.
An easy way to remember "Stalactites vs Stalagmites". StalacTITES hang down from above and require a "tight" hold on the ceiling to keep from falling. StalagMITES are mighty and grow from the floor up.
visiting Carlsbad Caverns, when I was about 12 (61 years ago) they said, Stalactites, hold 'tight' to the ceiling, and if you aren't careful, you 'might' step on a Stalagmite ...
A simple sculpture, but an iconic idea displaying the fancy tail fins of Cadillac's, and all buried at the same angle to one another. The classy lines of these cars are hard to recognized 'up close' anymore, it looks as if there are multi-layers upon layers of colored bubble gum. And after The Hussy's showing of Cadillac ranch up close and personal, I can now 'El Paso' on going there in person !!...thanks and travel on WH !!
Happy you got to visit this classic artwork on the road to the eclipse viewing. Wonderhussy knows what is wonderful. As they used to say "keep on truckin',dude ". Stay well Sarah. ❤😊
I visited the Cadillac Ranch back in August of 2003. The layers of spray paint was not even a 1/4 of the thickness that Sara found. At least one of those cars featured a four wheel independent suspension. For the rear suspension, Cadillac made use of a travel trailer towing hitch design. The two arms were attached to the shock asorbers and the ball hitch part of the arms sat on a towing ball.
I swung by it for a few minutes on a road trip in May 2018. I ended up staying for 2 hours, watching the parade of people coming and going, painting, climbing on the cars, etc. It is an amazing people watching place, even more so than Disney or a ballgame, because the barrier to entry is just to show up, no expensive tickets required, pretty much just a car passing by. So, you get a more genuine and more random slice of society showing up. The cars/art is more appealing and fun than I expected, also. A few miles later, I was eating at the Big Texan steak place, watching guys attempt to eat the 72oz steak dinner to get it for free. None of the 3 who tried while I was there, succeeded. They tended to end up with their head in their hands, trying to keep the massive amount of food from coming back up.
Visited this years and years ago. Back then, no one spray painted. Instead, they added decals and stickers. Which I thought was more fun. And less litter.
Wow so close and I missed you again..I grew up in Amarillo.stanley marsh was a billionaire who did a lot of crazy things we would party on a street down town of Amarillo and he would get into an airplane and fly over us real close to the ground.he also put up crazy signs all over town. Any who I really wish I knew you were coming this way I could have shown you a great time.and shown you a lot of neat stuff around this area.hopefully some day I'll get to set down and have a drink with you in a hot spring..love what your doing keep on keeping on peace WH✌️much love...
The souvenir trailer does sell the official Cadillite jewelry. I got a pair of earrings there last summer. I have lived in Texas my whole life and had never been there, but decided to stop by on a trip back from Colorado. The smell of paint hits you as soon as you open your car door and gets overwhelmingly strong as you get to the Cadillacs.
Hi Sarah, I drove past these in Sept . 74 on my way from Witchata Falls back to Fallon , NV after finishing an Air Force school down yonder . The cars had the factory paint at that time . mHarry in AK
Fun roadside attractions. I drove by there today headed to Gallup, NM on an extended road trip. Didn’t stop as I’ve been there before. After trying to spray paint my name, I had a new respect for those who can make art with a spray paint can.
Hey Wonderhussy if you're still interested in weird things, go to Seattle and walk thru the gum wall! Colorful and nasty looking.....just like all that spray paint! 🤪 lol So bring your favorite gum (if you chew any) and stick your mark on that wall! Ok, just saw the "Trump" in white paint and your sound effect! Almost choke on my meal from laughing! Good effect Sarah! Lol 😅
Hussy! You made it to my home state of Texas!! YAY!! Loved this video! So glad you graced us with your presence!! I'm actually heading out YOUR way next month on Mother's Day! Maybe we'll run into each other!!
Headed back west Wonder hussy youll encounter the Goodnight Loving trail. A cattle trail full of lore from the western days. Charlie Goodnight was a famous cowboy and even has his own area at the Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma ciwboy hall of fame.
Well! I have now saw Cadillac ranch and I can erase that from my bucket list. It is so much easier too sit in my recliner and have somebody else take me a long too those places even if it is just a video. I think it works for me. Have a great day!
Sarah-Jane, the way I always remember stalactites and stalagmites, is that stalactites are 'tight' to the ceiling, and that stalagmites grow upwards and 'might' eventually reach the ceiling.
After stumbling across your video and listening to your voice I kept trying to figure out who you sounded like. You have a certain way with your words that you sound just like Elvira Mistress Of The Dark. I just love the way you talk. I could listen to you talk all day. Thank You For Having Such A Wonderful Video To Really Enjoy The Viewing Of The Cadillac Ranch And You Hosting The Video With Such Ways You Talk About The Cadillacs. I Just Love The Way You Talk. Keep Creating Your Videos. May God Bless You So Much And Your Family. Thanks Again. 😁🙏
Stalactites stick "tight" to the ceiling. Stalagmites might one day reach the ceiling. When a stalagmite grows up from the floor and connects with a stalactite growing down from the ceiling they connect to form a "mighty-tight"..
In the early 1980s the radio airwaves were constantly playing Bruce Springsteen's " Cadillac Ranch" along with "Born in the USA and The River" (which I loved listening to) and seeing that there really is a Cadillac Ranch is kind of cool, despite all the nasty pollution it has since created. Now as for being proposed to someday, with a beautiful "Cadillite" paint-chip engagement ring ,hand crafted in Amarillo ; that sure would be "fitting" serendipity. You have summed it all up (quite articulately) , as I too saw the "wonder in it all "and glad I did. Thanks for taking me there ; as I live on the other side of the planet and not too sure if I'll ever make it over to Texas, although it's now on my Bucket List and anything is possible..☮
The one without a tailfin is a 1956 Cadillac. Tailfins started in 1957. The 56 Cadillac may have donated is tail lights to the Chech & Chong big green Van . It had 56 Cadillac tail lights. A little trivia for you. The movie company sold the van to the father of the kid in the opening scene of the movie. Years later I helped build his dad's house in Sonora, California. The van was parked in the driveway for a couple of years. He sold it and it has disappeared.
I saw it in the original location and then after it was moved. Its actually easier to visit now. Being closer made it sort of a hang out. Which in its own way was pretty cool. But people were a lot different then. Now it would probably suck. Already some genius decided to light one up? People are getting weirder every year. Lets hope it shifts back to going places and just enjoy the fact you're there again. What made the Ranch so cool was, tagging Was invited! Glad you left your mark it will always be there just under a few thousand others.
I drove 40 miles west of Amarillo to Vega looking for the cars. Stopped at a Stuckey’s and asked were they were. The Stuckey’s people said they were back right outside of Amarillo by Love’s truck stop. I had a good road trip anyway.
First time I ever saw the Cadillac Ranch, was in 1986. There was no graffiti on the cars and they were closer to Amarillo. The next time I saw them was in 2008 and they were moved and graffiti was everywhere. I personally don’t care for the graffiti look but that’s just me. Love watching your videos especially when it is somewhere that I had visited.
Cool! Something I would probably never get to see otherwise. Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling...Stalagmites might get there someday. That's how I remember.
It is tragic there is so much trash left but as you saw the trash barrels get filled up very quickly. The spray paint they sell at that trailer is the same price as at the store so they aren’t gouging which is nice. I’ve seen artists that make jewelry out of the paint chips all the way in Virginia. They look pretty cool. If you go south on I-27 just south of the loop in Amarillo is a set of legs that Marsh put in. Some of the signs he put in are still there but many people uprooted them after he was accused of the horrible things.
My memory, such as it is so many years later, of Cadillac Ranch is stopping for a look-see in January 1984 -- no small matter, since I was riding with my father, who almost never stopped driving for roadside attractions. But we had slept at a motel in Amarillo that night, and the attraction was made out of cars from my father's generation of young drivers, so we stopped -- in the freezing cold and snow. I tried to take pictures, but my camera had been in the trunk all night and was frozen, so I settled for clipping off a piece of licence plate light wire (still have it). We were the only people there, and not so much spray paint, and it was closer to the road. As a young artist and reader of art magazines, I knew about Ant Farm, and had seen pictures of them doing crazy stunts like driving a fake Bonneville racer through a wall of TV sets, so it was a pilgrimage for me, though I'm sure it confirmed my father's bad opinion about art (he was colorblind). I bet a can of Rustoleum paint would improve your chances of immortality when decorating the monument, and a handful of paint pens would help the definition of your Indian signs. It's odd that there isn't more yellow, in honor of the city of Amarillo.
Visited back in November 2021! The super strong smell of paint and the dripping texture is what I remember the most!
My husband went to the original location in 1976 when he was 19 years old. They were complete including windshields. No spray paint. Watching you every week is something we share ❤
Would love to see a photo of how they looked back then. Thanks for sharing your recollections.
Must be nice to share something. My husband and I seem to share nothing. 😢
@@user-ho3dk4pg8y Sorry. I don't have a wife to share anything.
It had been storming when I passed thru a year ago, and the cadillacs were sitting in large puddles, so it's cool that you show them up close!
I was a trucker, actually owner/operator and I always looked at them when I passed by! 😊

did the 'COFFEES' own this?? i'd never known that . . .

I actually remember the time when there was NO spray paint on them !! They were red white and blue 6:00 black if i recall!
I remember that too

Cadillac, Cadillac! Long and dark, shiny and black! Open up your engines, let em' roar! Tearing up the highway like a big old dinosaur!
Springsteen in the house!
Gonna take my pa gonna take my aunt. Gonna take em down to the Cadillac Ranch!
Even Burt Reynolds in that black Trans Am, all gonna meet down at the Cadillac Ranch.
🎶 Cadillac Ranch 🎶 Bruce Springsteen song from "The River" album 1980
A great sax solo by the late Clarence Clemmons as well
I remember a time when the cars were not covered with spray paint. Now this place is nothing more than a monument to human stupidity and waste.

you need a 1959 caddi it would suit you, I was there in the 80s
Drove through it and was floored! The continued to get Texas Steaks!
Cadillac Ranch looks clean. When we were there March of 2022 there was water in that field, and hundreds of empty paint cans.
Driving to TX always looked forward to see them, since I owned 54 coupe de ville caddy
Great combo: colorful Wonderhussy amidst colorful wrecks :-)
In my opinion those painted stacked rocks are way cooler than the cadillacs
I stopped there in 74 from Albuquerque, the caddy’s looked much different then..
On one of my favorite Neil Young album cover.

The next time I saw them was in 2008 and they were moved and graffiti was everywhere. I personally don’t care for the graffiti look but that’s just me. Love watching your videos especially when it is somewhere that I had visited.
Great video 🌹🌹🌹
Been by it many many times, but never stopped.
sTalacTiTes grow from the Top.
Stand mighty, hang tighty!
Mites grow up, Tights fall down
Cool! Something I would probably never get to see otherwise.
Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling...Stalagmites might get there someday. That's how I remember.
Very interesting...thx Sarah.
Always windy in Amarillo. Been past there over a hundred times in the semi but could never figure out what it was so now I know.
I am fiddling "Swinging on a Gate" on my Violin....
Hello from the rocky mid-coast of Maine, US.. Wednesday, April 24th, 2024.
Next time you are in Amarillo, you’ll have to check out the Bug Ranch on other side of town on I-40, commissioned by the Big Texan.
Enterprising individuals could make art out of old spray paint cans. Hey, for Burning Man, a big explosion!
Oh Sarah, You've got sound under control, no problems with the sound, even with the wind.
Loved my trip there many years ago.
Ahhhhhhh! There are OFTEN Rattlesnakes found in and around those cars. YIKES!!!!!!!
Sarah’s got some guns!
