Renew Faulty Door Lock Actuator Assembly Freelander

  • In this video, I renew a faulty door lock regulator assembly. In my case, the key lock wasn't working, thus the vehicle couldn't be locked or unlocked with only the key. The remote worked fine though. Squirting a suitable lubricant spray like WD40 was of no help. If attempting this job yourself, always work safely, disconnect the battery. Caution: the Torx bolts at the side can be difficult - do not use the wrong Torx socket otherwise you will round it off. If you round any off, you may need to use an extractor get it out. Disclaimer - I am not a mechanic but a DIY, work safely at all times, this video is not a substitute for expert technical assistance.

    I did this on mine thanks to your Video. I found refitting
    the lock difficult because the cable kept coming off the lock. I solved this by
    bending its hook over so when I put the eye on. It would not slip off so easy
    when trying to get the other two bits in place. After that not much trouble,
    Great video J

      Great to know since I will be doing this on the 1.8 4 cyl shortly since the same lock is playing up and locks on key fob arm but doesn't unlock when you press disarm - the only way to unlock it is with the key. Jasco

    Just had one apart, found it easier to disconnect the cable at the inside handle end and just thread the cable through when taking the solenoid unit out.
    Make sure the hook end is facing down when you install the cable otherwise it will be 180 degrees out.
    The 8 mm bolt behind the rubber grommet is to remove the outer door handle if you are replacing the lock barrel otherwise leave this in place.

      Right about the 8mm bolt. I did this job 2 weekends ago on my 1.8 petrol Freelander and spent close to an hour with my hand inside the door trying to hook the cable on...

      Glad the video helped and inspired. The hardest part of it all from my experience was trying to hook/unhook the cable to the lock assembly as you can’t see it. I fiddled for at least an hour as you haven’t got the benefit of visuals. But eventually you’ll hook and unhook it.

    I got to the part where the window workings should come down to make room for the new actuator to be fitted but the glass would my come away from it ? Any advice please.

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, the window should be in the fully closed position (not open) to provide you with access to get the old actuator out and new one in. The glass or window won’t interfere with you getting the actuator out and the new one in. Please provide further info.

      @@jascokovacevic I’ve tried it again this morning and still the window is stopping me from continuing,won’t let me push the window motor out the way I don’t no where to go from here? Any other advise please.

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidfinn1172 Noted. Did you unbolt one of the window guide rails, just remove the bolt like I did after 3.38 and before 4.24, and gently push back the guide rail? This should provide access with the tight space to assist in removing the door lock motor.

    Hi mate just wondering if you can help me. I've got no power to central, windows won't work, radio not working, internal lighting don't work. Have checked all the fuses all is OK. Can only open driver's door. Can't open the other doors from inside. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks mate.

      Hi mike, this could be many things, however, did you or anyone else recently do any work on the car where they might have removed and refitted some bolts, and in the process might not have possibly tightened a bolt providing an earth connection somewhere? The RAVE manual provides a diagram of the many earth connectors throughout the Freelander.

    Hi jasco awesome video ,I have similar problem but I can lock and unlock drivers door with key and also lock all doors with remote but when I use remote to unlock doors the drivers door won't unlock then I have to use key to unlock it ,would doing what you done fix this or is it something else thanks

      Hi, I had that exact problem on my 1.8 Freelander. What I did here did fixed it. New regulator. Some people sometimes go to the wrecking yards and get a second hand one and go through a lot of colourful language in hooking that cable on.... only to find it has the original issues as the one they had.

    Hi there am have the same sort of problem but on the front passenger side and the door wont electronically lock either with the fob or by just locking the drivers door but i can manually do it which is a inconvenience especially when you think the whole car is unlocked but its not and when open the passenger door it sets the alarms off lol. but do you think that this could be the same problem and would have to change the part like you have above. thanks

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi reece, it could be the locking actuator for the passenger door from what you have described. It could also be a problem elsewhere in the electrics but if your other locks are working fine and it's just this door, then a different actuator might allow you to further investigate whether or not this solves the problem.

    Hi Jasco, forgive me i'm missing the obvious but... how do you get access to remove the cables? I can't see anything from the inside looking up!?

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shaun, do you mean the cable from the inner door handle? As fun as this may sound, you need to unhook it without sight. You will only have feel. There's enough room to put your hand in there and open the small plastic compartment door on the actuator assembly where the cable hooks on to. Just unhook it. After a few goes you'll get to it. As a reference point, you can see the small plastic door on the new actuator assuming you have one you want to install, and open the small plastic door on it - you'll see where the hook is.

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shaun if you pause this video at various spots between 4:43 and 4:50, it will show this cable. The other ones shouldn't be hard as they are simply the small metal lock rod from the door drop down lock and the other is the outer handle which pulls out with some persuasion, as does the small rod for the external door lock.

    • @clarky6233
      @clarky6233 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, until this morning I didn't watch the video on a laptop - the comments explaining the pictures don't appear on a mobile phone version of the video. I'm considering removing the outer door handle for access, do you think that may help?

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly but I maybe only for the rod that runs from the key hole to the actuator as you might have sight of it. I didn't remove the ext handle. The greatest one for me to remove was the cable that hooks on as paused in 4:43, with patience you will eventually unhook it.

      +Abdelrahman Alomari Hi there, I have never done this one before. I believe a special item is required for this purpose. The best port of call for this one : the dealer or any good independent specialist mechanic with this equipment.

      +Abdelrahman Alomari if it is the original fob. point towards the front driver side wing and keep pressing lock and unlock until it starts working. if it is a replacement fob, land Rover will have to programme it for you

      @jascokovacevic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +keith o'connor Thanks Keith. I will check it out. I actually tried to get video footage of unhooking and hooking up the cable inside the door, I put a flex boroscope snake cam in there and tried to place a torch for lighting and despite all of this - totally dark still! I'm actually thinking of switching over to Evans Waterless Coolant, have you heard of this one and do you use it yourself in place of the red coolant?

    • @keithoconnor7107
      @keithoconnor7107 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jasco Kovacevic I've heard of it, there's a place in Ireland that's been doing it (or something similar) for a few years. I rang them for some info after doing my head gasket, it's like a gel and was originally used for high performance sports cars. But with the freelander, pajero, Opel (Holden brand in Australia) head problems they developed a version for mainstream engines. from the sales speech, it sounds pretty good. but I think I'll wait to hear from someone that's used it myself.

    Quite possibly the noisiest ratchet on the planet🤣🤣🤣🤣
    My fault is the opposite of this.
    I can lock all 4doors on the remote but only unlock the rear doors on the remote. I then have to open the driver's door with the key and open the front passenger door from the inside.

    • @jascokovacevic
      @jascokovacevic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Barry, yes the ratchet is pretty noisy! Sounds like you’ll be doing this for the same door as mine and the front passenger one.
