  • 30. March - 2. April 2021. Turkey (Türkiye). Balıkesir Province. Ayvalık District. We spent four days in Ayvalık, mostly on Cunda Island (AKA Alibey Island), which is the largest of the Ayvalık Islands archipelago. Ayvalık holds many former Greek Orthodox Churches. Most have either been converted into mosques, been restored as museums, or are in ruins, thanks to the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Ayvalık is on the UNESCO tentative list for its architecture and industrial landscape, consisting of abandoned olive oil factories, brick chimneys, and rich variety of buildings from the 1800s. The food we had here was very memorable, particularly the breakfasts at Köfün (mandarin jam), the seafood Turkish delight at Moshos Taverna, every pastry at Cunda Karadeniz Pastanesi, and the Ayvalık toast at Hacıoğlu Aşkın Tost Evi, with frequent mastic (gum) coffee breaks at Taş Kahve.
