  • Challenging behaviour is any behaviour that isn't helpful to a person. It can be dangerous, destructive or disruptive.
Language matters. How we refer to behaviour gives a clue to how we feel about it.
Some names for the behaviours that need to be reduced are:
    Problem behaviour
    Challenging behaviour
    Interfering behaviour
    All behaviour is communication.
We should always try to understand what purpose the behaviour serves. What message is the learner trying to get across to us?
There are 4 functions of behaviour:
    To get attention from people
To gain access to tangible items
    To escape or avoid situations
    To gain automatic reinforcement (sensory)
When we correctly identify the function we can choose a replacement that meets the same need and makes the challenging behaviour unnecessary.
Replacement behaviours usually involve functional communication training. Where you teach the child an alternate way of manding for their needs to be met.
If a child is crying to get my attention... I might teach them to say "Excuse me, Lindsey" or to exchange a card that says "Let's play!"
Finding the right replacement behaviour can sometimes be tricky. But when you do, the challenging behaviour disappears.
When addressing challenging behaviour, it's vital to always ensure safety: the learner's safety, peer's safety, family's safety and the clinician's safety.
Stims are not always a challenging behaviour. If the stimming isn't hurting anyone or stopping the learner from being productive it shouldn't be stopped.
