Episode 3: "In the Tomb of the White Baron" by Tamlan Dipper
Under the cold, indifferent skies of Siberia, a forbidden tomb awaits plunder.

Tamlan Dipper is a British author who works as an engineering analyst. His inspirations for the story, apart from the Mythos, were George MacDonald-Fraser, G.K. Chesterton, and Raymond Chandler. An excellent biography of the real von Ungern-Sternberg is The Bloody White Baron, by James Palmer - he was far more bonkers and unsavoury than even this story implies (The Baron, not James Palmer). This was Tamlan's first published short story, but he is a keen creator of Call of Cthulhu, the tabletop roleplaying game.
Tamlan is currently supporting the Hospitallers for Ukraine: www.hospitallers.org.uk

"I did what any red-blooded Englishman does when confronted with the truly mysterious and incomprehensible - I punched him." 😂
Not going to lie, that was my favourite line. Inspired by an anecdote from Ranulph Fiennes, where he punches a nun.
@@tamlandipper29😅 The explorer/mountaineering guy?wtf possessed the guy to thump a nun?😅
I was out walking the dogs and began to stagger with laughter at this line. I have been on both ends of such a situation, a few times.
If we were reading a Biggles adventure it would continue with,
“….followed by thirteen sharp jabs to his ribs, married with a skilful feint and concluding with a devastating upper cut…”
Cue politically incorrect reference to the wax-nosed unfortunate.*
@@craigoliver8712 If I recall correctly, it was alleged that the nun in question had, without forewarning, applied a compress to an open injury on Sir Ranulph's spine. It should be noted that the nunnery was helping him convalesce. I had the story second hand.
Cool. It's like the 'The Fire of Ashurbanipal'. Guns. Gore. Adventure. Ancient Mind-Bending Horror. More please.
Turns out I had not read that one, so I checked it out here on Horrorbabble. I see the resemblance.
Dude! Totally reminded me of that one, I was thinking “man I REALLY like adventure ones like this!” 😊
My tendrils got excited
😂
Warren is alive and well working in the Miskatonic University Library’s braille section. His interpretation of its newest grimoire indicates something horrible is coming.
He can feel it.
Working on a new call of Cthulhu character and then this banger drops, love to see it
I loved how this tale combined elements of actual history with eerie occultic horror. Many thanks, Ian.
Only 15 mins in and I’m already confident that this is the best of the “new tales of the mythos” yet. Von Ungern was a fantastic choice to write in as a man communing with occult forces, anyone who knows about his life can see how well his story lends itself to such mystical imaginings.
He was a mad lad that's for sure
There is the book The Bloody White Baron, which tells the history of the Baron and the Reds v. Whites. Love this story, though.
@@genegallistelI used that book as my main reference. I strongly recommend it. Good spot!
@@tamlandipper29And please read Corto Maltese in Sibir!
I like the style, clearly Lovecraftian, but with a rolling pacing befitting the action.
Wow, that one was actually great. A huge percentage of modern Cthulhu mythos stories are kinda lame, but this one is really nicely written, touches upon a very original setting, and pretty cool and weird historical characters. The Baron was such a crazy guy, I wouldn't be surprised he actually searched for something like this IRL. Great narration as always. Ian, you are a treasure.
Appreciate the praise for the text, but yes, Ian made it liiiiiiive.
@@tamlandipper29 did you write this?
@@user-rd3rf3ft8e Yup. For the record no opium or sergeants were harmed in the making.
@@tamlandipper29It's like being inside Rasputins ( Corto Malteses friend ) head!
It's meant as great praise!
Makes me think of "Bloody" Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg as conjured in Charles Stross' _The Fuller Memorandum_ of the "Laundry Files" series. To anyone interested in dark science fiction, occult secret history, petty office politics and bureaucracy, covert operations and espionage, and a uniquely geometric/calculative take on Lovecraftian terror, I suggest you begin with _The Atrocity Archives._ There's also a well-voiced preamble to Stross' unsettling multiverse in an alternate history story called _A Colder War,_ voiced by Ken Hunt here on YT.
Definitely an inspiration. I also agree that A Colder War is great.
Thanks for the tip off - I’ve just listened to A Colder War and thoroughly enjoyed it, it fitted in well with my present gloomy outlook for our species and planet :)
All the best to you ✌🏻
“I constantly consulted my watch by the light of my electric lantern, and listened with feverish anxiety at the receiver of the telephone; but for more than a quarter of an hour heard nothing. Then a faint clicking came from the instrument, and I called down to my friend in a tense voice………….

Yet another excellent example from HB of what someone once called "the theater of the mind." There's nothing I enjoy more than sitting back, closing my eyes, and listening to a good story read and told by a great story-teller.

von Ungern-Sternberg and Cthulhu mythos mashed up in one story. Well, That certainly is appealing !
This is the best of the Cthulu Lives stories so far - obviously a loving homage without being too, too obvious about it.

Good nighttime stories. Soothing.
Fun story, unique setting, excellent narration. Top notch addition to the mythos. Thanks for the excellent listen as always!
Fantastic as always thanks again Ian!😈👍🏻👍🏻
I loved the setting and background story. It's like Hemingway rewrote "The Double Shadow" in a Lovecraftian universe.

I was so stunned at being compared to Hemingway I forgot to say thank you!
Yay, I am first to listen! ❤️
What a great original setting.

@@michaelgreaves2375 serious question, are you vaccinated? The only people I know who have caught Covid have been vaccinated. I understand the small sample size and the percentages of the population who have been vaccinated but I find it interesting.
Man, I got Covid today as well and spent 6 hours lying in the bathtub oblivious to all of humanity.
I got vaccinated and soon after a booster I hung out with my girlfriend for the days before and after she tested pos for Cov - so at her MOST communicable. And we were in, ya know, CLOSE contact the entire time.
I was just waiting for my pos test, knowing it was coming, and it never did. Those vaccines are a MUST. You don’t want to get Covid without them, both for short and long-term symptoms.
GET VACCINATED and get the boosters, everyone! Covid is no joke
I read a biography once about Ungern-Sternberg. He was a fascinating character who briefly thrived in a very chaotic time, at the crux of vast maelstrom of titanic and opposing geopolitical forces.
INTERESTING I WONDER IF IT CAN STILL BE FOUND. THANKS FOR THE TIP 🥸👍
@@seanmurphy6480'The Bloody White Baron' by James Palmer is probably the book. It is very good. Old Ungern-Sternberg was genuinely crackers. I believe the Middlesex Regiment were in Siberia at the time or just before. Their commander John Ward (later the last of the Lib-Lab MPs) wrote a good book too. Ungern-Sternberg and his one-time boss, Grigory Semyonov were fascinating characters but not people you wanted to get too close to!
Was it The Bloody White Baron by James Palmer?

Fantastic story and narration!
I really like studying this period of history, especially the Russian Revolution. So little is written about this region of the world in the timeframe the story covers. I find it so fascinating. It is neat how the author weaves real historical facts into this excellent story.
We know the chant towards the end so well....
I will be listening to this again!
Thanks!
You think it's a historical story, then it's a Mythos story, then it's a different kind of weird tale entirely - built on a classic theme. Wonderfully scary creatures at the end. Still, I hope we find out from some other narrator whether the Baron ever found Leng.
Wonderful tale!
I love your voice so much❤
Great story, really enjoyed all the action which is a nice change of pace from the scholarly types getting in over their heads.
I love the setting and the fact that it was a rougeish tresure hunt type story.
And that the shadows seem to be a bit out of sync with reality and are using it as a hunting method

POKE. Did you like my second one, out last week?
Best thing you've done all year so far 👏and unquestionably my favourite - as tho Dipper said "hey I need to write a story JUST for David..." 🤣
This is a fine story indeed.
Hi David. I don't think I know you, but it is very gratifying that you enjoyed it so much.
@tamlandipper29 your knowledge of this timeframe, all the factions involved, and they utter chaos at the time is amazing. When you mentioned the "Czech Legion," I knew you did your research.
Great work! Looking forward to reading more of your work.
@@tamlandipper29 Hi Tamlan, but you wrote a mythos story that has not only the Bad Baltic Buddhist Baron as the titular villain but name checks The Czech Legion AND Semyonov as well, so somehow, I think that you DO lol (It would be great to see you do a story involving Semyonov next, I can only IMAGINE how much trouble he'd cause getting his mits on an Eldritch item...) enjoyed it thoroughly ☺
Killer. One of the best new Mythos tales yet, as it tries something new yet historically-based, while only lightly touching on mythos themes. Love his ongoing imagery relating to the sky (subtle take on cosmic horror) and boots/feet/paws. Really builds toward the climax. Great stuff.
Can’t believe I honestly forgot a new one was out today!!!!!!!! 😂. Yippee 🙌🏻
A good story Tamlan Dipper. As well, good narrative.
Very kind of you to say so. Glad you enjoyed it, with maximum credit to Ian's narration.

Very kind of you to take a minute and say so.
@@tamlandipper29 Oh, you are the one who wrote that?
Congratulations! It's a fascinating story. The concept of the shadow that stays in place when you move is very original and cool.
I also love how there are no good people in this entire story - all have warped and distorted morals within a warped and distorted war. The war background is the actual horror here.
Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Great work!

Beautiful realistic story about that crazy time in Russland 1919, when the "Mensjewiki" the white Army, fought the Bolsheviki, the red army.
It's still not clear how many people lost their lives, in this hardly ever mentioned war.
