Dancing Queen is not "remake" in the traditional sense. SM purchased the rights for the song and beat to make Dancing Queen. However due to some sort of legal hiccup Duffy's company release Mercy first which was a blessing in disguise. SM had to quickly shelve Dancing Queen, reschedule the comeback and did GEE instead. You'll notice the same jean outfits in white, the colored jeans and stage is used. The diner is, I believe, stripped and turned into the clothing store. The lyrics are nothing alike. And because of the original release time frame it should be considered more like a sampling than a remake. Imo

Since you like Villain, you'll really like GG's Japanese discography. SNSD had one one of the most successful careers for a Kpop group in Japan. That record still stands till date.

This was such a good take! I’m glad people are still giving GG a listen even these days so as a GG fan since 2010, thank you! I’m so sad the Japanese videos get copyrighted because if there is a majority consensus among sones, it’s that their Japanese discography is even better than their Korean one. But for more GG content, I second anyone who says to check out Girls Generation-TTS, Oh!GG and other Bside MVs.

I really appreciate the honest reaction! This is a cool environment with a mix of knowing a bit going in and really appreciating the music and it's impact on kpop but also going in as non-stans willing to say your off the cuff opinions without fear of offending fans!
A couple fun facts: 'Dancing Queen' isn't really a cover or a remake, it was supposed to actually be released around the same time as 'Mercy' but it got delayed after 'Mercy' became such a huge hit and legal technicalities delayed it. The best part of the song for me is the four huge high notes by Jessica, Tiffany, Taeyeon and Seohyun. As cute as the choreography is, it really is a vocal flex song.
Brandon and Alex really hit the nail on the head with 'I Got A Boy.' Like Therese, I actually HATED the song I first heard it, but it ended up becoming the 'Bohemian Rapsody' of kpop and you can really appreciate it more on the second, third, fourth, etc. listen, especially once you see it's impact on kpop and kpop beat switches.
SNSD really are legends in kpop. Thanks for the reaction guys!!

As much as I like their aegyo cat dance and those high notes in Dancing Queen, I don't think that it will have the same impact as the song Gee, so SMEnt changing it was a blessing in disguise.
At that time, they also just experienced the infamous 2008 black ocean and Kpop was not YET that accepted in the West, so a controversy of plagiarism might have ended the SNSD's career.

Dancing Queen is not a remake, SM has the rights but due to things that happened Duffy released Mercy first and since it was a hit, SM had to change the title track and they chose Gee as a replacement, in fact in the MV you can see that they go back in time and they go to 2008, which is when Dancing Queen was recorded. Also, on the cover of Gee's album you can see the girls wearing the light blue jeans and white t-shirts they have on Dancing Queen MV.

they literally had to reshoot mr mr like 3 times cause they lost almost all footage. many of the shots are actually just photoshoot clips, also the budget was used up they just threw this together. thats why thers no lear storyline or whatever

Also, the recording and music video of Dancing Queen was made way back in 2008/2009 that's why they all looked and sounded younger and they were supposed to release it back then but some things came up and they released 'Gee' instead.
Also a fun fact: I Got A Boy was a huge hit in Korea in 2013 and it was hailed as "The Bohemian Rhapsody of K-Pop" and when SNSD performed it on Dream Concert the entire crowd was singing the whole song you could barely hear SNSD's voices. Another fun one is when Jessica said "Let's bring it back to 140" if you rewind the video (excluding the whole intro thingy) the beat they came back to is exactly at the 1:40 timeframe and the BPM is at 140 so you could say it was like a metronome marking.

36:13 ish Uh, just to correct the girl *without Girls' Generation's I Got A Boy* we wouldn't have those experimental groups. GG's Gee/Oh inspired those other cutesy groups. And let's not forget the concept of INTW that were very much gfriend and variety in the later years.
Even TTS-Twinkle inspired that foursome oldie/diva group's sound that had a rapper 😂.

BBC still owns the copyright though, so for personal streaming that works but for us to reupload on here BBC would still be able to claim monetization on the videos
