The social life of your immune system | Keely Muscatell | TEDxReno

  • Dr. Keely Muscatell describes research on how the immune system responds to social experiences and shapes our perceptions of the social world. The immune system is listening to what’s happening in our social worlds. Based on what it hears, it adjusts its activity. The immune system can signal us to socially withdraw from strangers, and draw toward those we are close to, who can provide us with comfort and care.
Dr. Keely Muscatell is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She leads the Carolina Social Neuroscience and Health Lab where together with a team of students, she studies the interconnections between social experiences, the brain, and the immune system. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is an excellent presentation. Thank you. In 2020 I came down with ANCA vasculitis. It took a long time for any physician to figure it out. Many wrong diagnoses. When finally my husband diagnosed me, took me to a private lab, got me tested for autoimmune - positive, he drove me directly to the emergency room. The cytokine storm created in my body damaged my kidneys and lungs. When I finally got to a physician who worked in that field ( rheumatology) they said " ANCA vasculitis is not well understood" Yes, true because there is an emotional component. Drs. , most of them do not accept that statement. I am recovered. I manage my stress and toxic ppl - even family. We must do what is healthy for ourselves. I thank you so much for this important work. I can tell by the comments that like the medical community this theory is not readily believed or accepted. I am telling you positively - you are over the target. Great work!

I have a similar story, different condition, but stress makes it a lot worse and I need to manage and my toxic family.
It's well known that stress affects the body, it's good to know how and that it's not just pychosomatic.

@@yvonne3903 You might look into LD Naltrexone. I take a 1.5 mg dose of this daily and it helps immensely.

So, I think from listening to this that, our inmune system gets selective about to what and to who utilize our energy because strong emotions requires energy from us. Pretty interesting!

Louise Hay wrote about this in her book “you can heal your life” decades ago. And it’s how we help people go into their subconscious to relieve the stresses “back then” where the inflammatory sensual experience and caused the consequential dis-ease.

This past March, I went into work sick for 2 weeks straight. I had no choice, and this was a customer-facing job. I hated people for months thereafter. Yes, everyone. I still hate some that I saw during that time. They made me feel like a monster for not staying home.

Great info and findings on how there are links between the brain and immune system. I think it's important to note though that if you're feeling crumby and down your immune system state is not the only reason for causing that. While it can be a cause, there are infinite other reasons why this could be, and some of which that would require taking action instead of laying around waiting for it to resolve. Examples: An unhealthy diet, inadequate amount of exercise, trauma affecting us subconsciously, health conditions, etc...Again, I appreciate this talk but I think the end of this could potentially be a danger causing a lot of people to not further investigate if it's not just from their immune system state.

I am suffering from dry eye syndrome since last one year, my doctor suggested it maybe due to autoimmune issue and inflammation, I personally felt it's something related to psychological condition as I faced really hard time during covid lockdown, whatever the case our current medical system has really limited knowledge of immune system

@@bryanable9813 sounds like it's autoimmune, not a low immune system but a dysfunctional one.
I'm on immunosuppressants and I have had a lot of mouth sores, the rheumatologist gave me folic acid for them and it helps, doesn't solve but helps. Maybe worth a try?

@@bryanable9813 when I was sick I also had stomatitis and chelitus on the corners of my mouth to the point - when you speak or try to eat something the corners crack open and bleed. If I were you, I would look into LD Naltrexone. It has helped me a lot. I would also look for a dr. that specializes in autoimmune disorders - not just a rheumatologist. I use one in Beloit, Wi - in case you are in this area. Dr. Geoffrey Bouc. Pred will also damage your bones. I have taken thousands of mg and had to get off. Good luck

Pl try a very simple and safe solution for dry eyes...maybe u will get relief
The moisturizing creams for under eyes usually used by ladies moist the area around eyes so reduces dry eyes eventually
i got relief from itchy eyes coincidentally after using under eye cream

@@bryanable9813 I have a similar experience, helps a little but when I forget to take it the mouth sores get worse. 5 mg dose. Your welcome, just thought information may be useful.
I take 1 a week to stop bone marrow from being destroyed by chemo drugs and the other 5 days for the mouth sores which after 20 years have definitely improved.
Definitely part of autoimmune, an ANA blood test will show if you have autoimmune condition, maybe worth getting if for no other reason than to rule it out.

Just as "evolution" intended?? How can a random process have "intent."? "Intent" is not an attribute of evolution. Intent is only capable with thought. Animals that act on instinct cannot be said to be expressing intent. Natural laws do not possess the powers of intent. I enjoyed this Ted talk, but she needs to clarify her last statement.

    • @salemsaberhagan
      @salemsaberhagan ปีที่แล้ว

Evolution can have intent same as mere proteins collected in lipid sacks can have intent. It's not the process, it's the individual beings that are part of that process who are aspiring towards something. They are the ones triggering the process.
