Ran into the same issue, those servos are notoriously easy to strip out. I stripped mine just by taking the screw out of the servo saver without holding it tight enough. You can either upgrade to a more expensive servo or get a stock replacement with upgraded gears for like 20 bucks.

I wonder if this is the reason quite a few people report that their servos have failed?

Was you able to get it smoothed out and working properly
Try putting it in high gear first, and adjusting it from there.
