      Everything from a powder puff load to stuff that rivals any 9mm ever made--easily--the 38 special is probably one of the best rimmed handgun cartridges ever made, for many reasons. Magnums are cool and all, but they are brutal.

      I carried an issued .38 for the first 20 years of my 30 yr career, was forced to use it more than once to defend myself (reloaded under fire in one case) & it worked. In retirement I pocket carry a J Frame. I still qualify annually for LEOSA (Law Enforcement Safety Act) with a 9MM & Model 60 snub. I score mid 90s w/either weapon but the J Frame is MUCH easier to carry.

Obviously they wouldn't use such marketing if it didn't work on at least a portion of consumers, so yes, there be easily swayed people among us. • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke ปีที่แล้ว +30

    • @blackberet9997
      @blackberet9997 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      No testing medium will be perfect
      For example, with the meat target, dead meat doesn't behave the same as living meat, same with bones. The meat target is a point of differentiation over other firearms channels. It's nowhere near perfect, but more it does present more data to draw from, which I appreciate greatly. And regardless, one can't let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

It is well known by the viewers that Paul likes Pop-Tarts and has had them in his survival pack (because they're ready to eat, high calorie, high energy). The real parody that is lost on many is that the segment is based on the old Camel "where a man belongs" cigarette print ads from the 1970s featuring the man, the legend, Bob Beck.

    Great video. As someone who carries revolvers most of the time, IWB most of the time, and works a sweaty job in a hot environment most of the time, the nickel plated casings are MUCH more resistant to corrosion. Brass casings start turning colors within days, whereas nickel can stay new-looking seemingly forever. Doesn't seem to affect reliability at all, but it is what it is.

    The j-frame is tricky. As Paul stated, matching the ammo to the gun is important to POI vs POA. Yes, it is nice if you can get those two close. My particular gun shoots a 158gr HP Hornady lead bullet pretty much where I aim. I load my own ammo. The chronograph says it is doing 848fps on average. The lead is not hard cast. It is pretty soft. I will guess it is somewhere in the cowboy action shooting range of 12 in hardness. I used a dead feral hog day old cadaver I found on the ranch for my meat test. At about 15 yds (stepped off distance) the bullets expanded like crazy. About penetration was about 12" average. On a 175lb hog, shooting the shoulder at a bit of an angle to get it to hit the ribs on the off side after traveling through the shoulder, it did well. For a defensive purpose, close range, which the snub nose guns are, it did OK.
    My point, again, use a bunch of different ammo to find the POI vs POA for your j-frame that gives you what you want.

    Very god video. Like your choice of carry ammo. I carry a Colt Cobra from the mid 60's, after your videos on I am carring standard pressure Critical Defense 110 Grn, since i cannot carry +P 's in it. Your videos are extremely helpful!!

    Locally the availability of green & white is usually worse than green & yellow, which is disappointing.
    Some of us really do use 38 Special in 4" barrels, so it would be nice to see some of these tests with that.

      Of course. I already know it will be informative and enjoyable as well as repeatable, falsifiable and verifiable. Others may prefer more flash in the pan but Mr. Harrell just fits my mind better. Is he the best for honesty, integrity and straight talking? You be the judge.

    Great comparison. My testing protocol is not quite up to Harrell standards, but in my 442 Golden Saber 125 grain "law enforcement" have been the top performer.

  • @sombra6153
    @sombra6153 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video video comparison. I would have chalked up the difference in Remington changing or updating their packaging colors to save $$$ from not buying yellow paint or something like that. It appears that it’s based on preference - whether the consumer wants brass or nickel cases. The biggest challenge with a short barrel revolver with fixed sights is finding a factory load that hits POA. My two inch Js seem to like 148 grain wadcutters, 158 grain SWCHP, and 147:grain Hydra Shok +p+, and everything else I’ve tried either shoots large groups or impacts well off POA as the distances increase (the 110 grain Critical Defense you mentioned shoots low-left for me at 25 yards and I’m not sure it’s me or the gun/ammo). While most will suggest that a two inch isn’t intended for longer distance shooting matches, there are some folks who carry them as backups that still have to pass a qualification course with them out to 25 yards and being able to hit somewhere inside the scoring ring of, say a FBI Q style target is essential. Anyway, I’m glad to see you testing these ammo selections from a two inch. Four inch performance would be interesting for us ‘geeks,’ but like you mentioned, most people carrying a .38 Special are carrying two inch.

      The idea of leaving no brass behind in a combat/self defense situation seems attractive to me, and I'm not sure why. I like the smooth back and no exposed hammer, but the low capacity reduces my interest in it.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine
      @0neDoomedSpaceMarine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's powerful enough to be useful, regular loads are a notch below the average 9mm Luger load, but +P loads of .38 Special easily go above.
      There's lifetimes of anecdotes of .38 Special doing a good job, and with the last few decades there's a lot of very good defensive loads which improve it.

    There's a reason i am subscribed to this channel. Factual information, presented in a way that you can taker from it what you will. Paul understands that not every test is indicative of anything other than what that test shows.
    You need to do your own research, with your own guns, to find what works for you. Because it doesn't matter how good or bad the gun or ammo is is, the shooter is the deciding factor. As in the human needs to decide what gun and ammo suits their particular needs.
    These videos are just really good jumping off points for people to start their own research.

    I found a few boxes of the green and white box .38 +P in a gun shop recently (UK), which was a bit of a surprise. Purely anecdotal since I don't know how long those boxes had sat there for or their storage conditions, but a few of the brass cases were quite discoloured and corroded. I've also got some green and white box .223 and many of those cases are discoloured too, doesn't appear to be very high quality ammo but they shoot well enough.
