Albino Elephant Khanyisa Leads Her Nannies & Herd on a Walk in the Wild 🐘

  • Go walking with the herd as Khanyisa leads, with allomothers Kumbura and Klaserie following after her. Enjoy some time with all the members in the herd, from the smallest to the biggest. Dust baths, bush foraging, ear flapping… it’s a beautiful day in the home of the elephants.
    You can see how much TLC the areas of the reserve where the elephants walk the most need. This is the mission of our land project, which we’re dedicating Monday 12 September’s Little by Little campaign to. Restoring their land is vital for their survival and that of all the wildlife sharing the reserve with the elephants!

    Sure seemed like a wonderful morning walk with the elephants which is so awesome to see.❤️🥰🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘. It always warms my heart when o get to see that as soon as the elephants see Adine, they come right up to her and greet her all the time.🥰👍🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘. That to me shows that they absolutely appreciate hr and very much love her too and that for me is just the utmost honor and respect that an elephant can ever give to a human.❤️🥰🐘👍 I do have to say that they all surly look quite happy and look very good too. Especially sweet Fishon.❤️ I also just love how they all do listen to command too from the Carers and also Adine too. Now maybe not all of them will sometimes because I have seen some like to go their own way (like Miss Pinky 😊❤️🐘) But for the most part they all are very good at respecting the humans who care for them. I do love watching th she kinda of videos and also, I continue to get an education too as to who is who because I have yet to figure out who is who with the elephants except Klaseri and Khanyisa whom I don’t forget who they are.🥰❤️🐘🐘. I do hope that you had a great day and that you have an awesome and blessed night and I send you all and the elephants too hugs, love, and many of God’s continued blessings too. Love you all! Awesome video as always Adine!! Question, people please be nice as I'm honestly curious. Couldn't HERD do controlled burns? I mean, little sections at a time? We have all seen the land that has burned, it comes back up bright green and full of beautiful greenery. They could somehow close off the sections so the wildlife wouldn't get in and burn their feet. Just thinking of ways to bring the greenery back. Adine you are a perfect back walker!!! I know I would've ended up fanny planting several times!! 😂😂🐘🐘🐘💖❤️💝

      They say yes. There have been some videos on TH-cam about that and maybe check HERDs blogs. Also the Amboseli Trust has a video about it. You can tell age but body size, the depth of the temporal area on the sides of the forehead area, tusk length, skin condition and several other factors.

    • @DianaBamaRN
      @DianaBamaRN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From all the videos I can say from sunrise to sunset. All the hours in the day. That length of time would vary from season to season!
      Once darkness starts to fall they are secured behind the protective electrical fence system in the stable/orphanage areas. Which gives them much needed protection from other wildlife. They have had recent “visitors” up to the fence line of some perhaps not so well meaning leopards, occasional lions and cheetahs. Plus other less so intimidating buffalo etc. so the fences are definitely needed. The herd become unsettled during these visits for sure.

    • @alison__16

      Hopefully HERD will see your question and give you a fuller and more extensive answer, but this is the story as I know it. I believe Jabulani was the original rescued baby, taken in by Adine's mom some 20something years ago. Unfortunately the wild herd didn't accept him, and knowing he needed a herd to live in and thrive, she rescued the rest of this herd from Zimbabwe where they were going to be culled due to land reforms, and brought them to South Africa. Limpopo, Pisa, Zindoga, Mambo and Klaserie were born here in SA into the herd, Kumbura was rescued from in or near Botswana after being orphaned and Timisa joined them after losing her mother also. Khanyisa is the latest member to be accepted into the herd after she was found caught and badly injured by a poacher's snare. They are a very unique herd in that they willingly accept and adopt outsiders into their family. Adine's mom, Lente started rescuing and protecting cheetahs at HESC which she founded and which still does incredible work in cheetah conservation, as well as caring for other orphans including rhinos, (baby Thaba was recently rescued by them). The nursery at HERD was built because Adine realised the orphan elephants needed to be raised alongside the Jabulani herd in order to give them the best chance of being integrated. (Previously they were cared for at HESC) Khanyisa and Fenya were the first elephant orphans to live at HERD nursery. Sadly Fenya's injuries and the ordeal she endured were too severe for her to survive and she passed away. She is commemorated with a tree they planted in her memory (which Khanyisa tried to eat every time she passes it! 😄) PS forgot to add that Jabulani was successfully integrated into this herd when they arrived in SA and it is named the Jabulani Herd after him. He was also the first elephant to befriend and spend time with Khanyisa through the fence when she first arrived as a tiny baby. He was also the first elephant she was physically introduced to and the first to accept her. He is also very close to orphan Timisa and often helps the females in watching over and protecting the little ones.

    • @banjemine4150

      There are 16 members of the herd Lori. 🐘
      Cows:
      - Tokwe (matriarch, second oldest female in the herd) and her two daughters Limpopo (eldest and first one born in the herd) and Pisa
      - Lundi, and her son Mambo
      - Bubi, and her son Zindoga
      - Setombe (oldest and biggest female in herd), and her daughter Klaserie
      - rescued orphans Kumbura, Timisa and of course little Khanyisa
      - not to mention beautiful Fenya, who sadly passed away 18 months ago due to her horrific injuries but will forever remain in all our hearts
      Bulls (based on dominance):
      - Sebakwe (dominant, biggest and oldest elephant in the herd)
      - Jabulani (first orphan rescued by Adine’s mother)
      - Fishan
      - Somopane (Adine mentioned previously that he’s the smartest of them all)
      I hope I got that right! It would be an honor to one day visit Adine’s Jabulani safari lodge in South Africa and give all of them a big hug.

    I am worried about Fishen right leg. Is he okay now?

    • @shannondominguez9725
      @shannondominguez9725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Fish is ok the winter season is harder on him because the cold increases his stiffness/pain in that leg but the team watches him closely and supplies him with a regular dose of anti inflammatory/pain management meds until the weather warms up. Unfortunately as a result of that injury Fishan will deal increased with pain each winter for the rest of his life it’s just something that comes with the territory but he really has adapted well to his circumstances,from my own experience I have somewhat of an idea of what he copes with. I have chronic pain/arthritis myself(since a young teenager)and I’ve also had to deal with pressure sores as well. Both of these things can be managed carefully in whatever the team finds best works for Fishan to give him a great quality of life (each individual is different so not everyone requires the same level of treatment)Spring and summer definitely makes things easier on him and it’s also great that he loves the water so much as going swimming really helps take the weight/pressure of that joint and helps increase his mobility it works the same way for people like myself to go for a swim when we have to manage our arthritis, chronic pain and in my case a lifelong condition which affects my muscles coordination and ability to move long distances being in the water is fantastic therapy.❤️❤️

    Which allomother let Khanyisa nurse from her when she first joined the herd?

    • @shannondominguez9725
      @shannondominguez9725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tokwe Bubi and of course Lundi were the 3 main ones Braveheart suckled from in the early days although Limpopo would try and get her to do it but sh wasn’t experienced enough(there’s many videos in the playlist from 2 years ago where you can see footage of her reaching for/suckling from the teat)Of course doing this was solely a form of comfort for Khanyisa and a way to help her bond with the females/make her feel safe bc none of the cows produce milk. Sunshine has since stopped suckling from her allomothers.

    Do all of these elephants sleep in the facility that Khanysia sleeps in or do they stay out in the wild all nite?

    • @DianaBamaRN
      @DianaBamaRN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have a stable right next to Khanyisa’s nursery home. It is well protected just as hers is, with electrical fencing and they happily and willingly walk into every sunset so they are safe as darkness falls. Not leaving until sunrise. There are sufficiently large spaces enough that they can walk about to stretch their legs and wander about if they desire. It’s not small and restrictive at all.

    I love this videos but best of all, I like continuing to learn how to identify each elephant! Why does Fishan have a pressure sore on his leg? I know he has an injured leg but I don’t understand the pressure dire.

    • @herdelephantorphanage
      @herdelephantorphanage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He lies on the injured leg’s side the most when he is sleeping so he can push himself back up using the stronger leg and this causes a pressure sore where he lies on his body, from the immense weight of his body. Other elephants alternate the sides they lie on so their pressure sores may not get as big or severe

    • @shannondominguez9725
      @shannondominguez9725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it’s not the objective to have the herd continue to breed right now the females are on contraceptives to prevent them from cycling and the bulls are given something as well to prevent them from entering musth(the only one who doesn’t have the ability to breed is Fishan as he was castrated as a younger bull due to an infection)The reason HERD was established was to give any future calves who’ve lost their family a 2nd chance with the Jabulani herd the way Kumbura,Timisa and Sunshine were accepted as well as to help continue to care for all 16 elephants currently there which is why the lodge was opened.🐘😊

      Tokwe is the matriarch however she’s not the oldest(she was born in 1989 but like the rest of the adults nobody is sure of her past except that it’s likely they’re all orphans)that would be Setombe who was born in 1985. No Fishan’s not father to any of the younger elephants(he was castrated prior to arriving in South Africa from Zimbabwe bc of an infection.)Limpopo,Pisa,Klaserie,Mambo and Zindoga were all born to the herd after the adults were rescued from Zimbabwe and all are now teenagers their father is either Sebakwe or any of the wild bulls who live in the reserve but the team isn’t sure;Tokwe for sure went out on a adventure prior to Limpopo’s arrival in 2006 so the possibility is there. Kumbura,Timisa and Khanyisa are all rescues so nobody knows who their original family/history is.
