My dad and my brother in 1998 were supposed to take the Swissair flight 111, but they took an earlier flight. And my mom didn't know that my dad and brother have arrived safely in Geneva. When she hear flight 111 crash, she was scared and waited patiently for a phone call. At 3 in the morning my dad called her, and my mom was relieved that my dad and my brother were okay. They did lost their suitcase from the flight 111, however all it matters to us was that they were okay.
Actually, the first event in the chain was that the in-flight entertainment system generated large amounts of heat, and this caused the wires to overheat and melt the plastic coating. This allowed a wire to arc, creating a spark that ignited the metallised mylar and started the fire.
But the fire would have already severely damaged the planes electrical systems by the time the flames were in the cockpit. Still such a terrible tragedy and way to go out. Terrifying..
