My uncle had worked around wild bears for over 30 as a tracker/guide all over Alaska and Canada, the only species he was afraid of was polar bears. He always said the only animal he ever encountered that showed no hint of compassion was the polar bear. He got bluff charged by a Kodiak on Afognak Island once and even that didn't shake him up as much as the time a polar bear started swimming after the small fishing boat him and his friend were in at the time. Said it felt like a real life version of the movie Jaws.

The Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi) is much like other brown bears in intelligence, although its tendency to feed in large dense groups leads to more complex social behaviors. Kodiak bears are generally solitary in nature; however, when food is concentrated in small areas, such as along salmon spawning streams, grass/sedge flats, berry patches, a dead whale, or even an open garbage dump, they often occur in large groups. Along a few streams on Kodiak, up to 60 bears can be seen simultaneously in a 2.6 km² (1.0 sq mi) area. To maximize food intake at these ecologically important areas, bears have learned to minimize fighting and fatal interactions by developing a complex communication (both verbal and body posturing) and social structure.

pound-for-pound stamina, speed of tactical movement

Polar bear have been known to kill grizzled. They have in fact incredible stamina. Some walk and swim hundreds of miles in a very short time. Anything known to kill small whales and pull them ashore isn't likely to back down from anything. The other consideration is that the known encounters have been between grizzlies and juvenile males or female polar bear. The largest males would have no need to roam South. Polar bear also spar in a test to see the strongest males therefore theoretically are more likely to have experience in fighting other large bears. I differ in opinion on the outcome.

    Here is an analasis:
(Keep in mind i both like polar and kodiak Bears)
    Arm strength:
The one with the strongest forelimbs have to be the Kodiak bear all Brown Bears have a hump on their back wich is pure muscle connected to the arms very usefull for digging but maybe also for fighting
    Bite:
The polar bear and Brown bear has the same biteforce (1200 psi) but the Brown bear has a wider skull able to use the biteforce more effectively it also has a Much larger head at 78cm where the polar bear only has a head length of around 40cm but this is not that Big of a difference as they still have the same biteforce
    Protection:
both Bears have thick fat layers but the difference is in fur polar Bears have shorter but thicker fur while Brown Bears have longer fur but not as thick fur so again about equal
    Size and body structure:
polar Bears Can grow larger than kodiak Bears and could have a weight advantage but even though kodiak bears are smaller its not by that Much and polar Bears are slimmer Built so they could be more aerodynamic in the water where as kodiak Bears are sturdier and stronger built
    Aggression:
im not quite sure on this one i Think grizzly Bears are more aggressive than both but i Think polar Bears and kodiak Bears have the same level of aggression
Claws: kodiak bear have larger claws
    Winner: kodiak bear

EXPERIENCE: as pure carnivores living in a hostile, barren environment, polar bears have to fight for every scrap of food and thus are forced to utilize their size, strength, and mental acuity on a daily basis!

Polar bears routinely hunt & eat whales (beluga & narwhal), as well as 2 ton walruses. I've seen footage of them hunting a pack of walruses, UNDERWATER, during one of their "long swims between ice-patches", and successfully catching 1; now THAT'S badass!

It would depend on the size of the bear, the health of the bear, weather one has cubs or not. A female bear defending her cubs is the about the most dangerous animal in the wild. The polar bear might avoid a fight but a mother defending her cub is different, Also depends on how hungry it is.

    • @underthetrees4780
      @underthetrees4780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My first thought was polar bear, they're true predators and kill large marine mammals like Walrus and that's much more challenging than catching some salmon.
The thing is Kodiak bears live much more densely, encounter each other much more often and regularly fight for river access. They're built to fight each other for dominance in a way polar bears are not. A large male Kodiak takes down a large male Polar bear, but in the less dominant females it may go to the polar bear huntress.

Kodiak bears are just a subspecies of grizzley bear that have been isolated in a certain area which enabled them to become very powerful (and also somewhat crowded) because of natural selection. Pizzley bears are a hybrid bear from a grizzly and polar bear of which some have been shown to actually not be sterile, which shows close enough genes to reproduce. Kodiak bears are basically grizzlies and polar bears are closely related, so any confrontation would be situational at best. They may actually end up mating which would be a scary beast on par with the short faced bear possibly. Polar bears are totally carnivores and Kodiak bears are omnivores means if you're meat, then polar bears will be more likely to attack, where anything is on the table for Kodiak bears if they are hungry. A hybrid polarkodiak bear sounds terrifying.

A hybrid of a polar bear and grizzly bear will produce an offspring comparable to a short faced bear? Where did you even get this information? Just because polar bears and grizzly bears are large doesn't automatically mean that their offspring will be even larger. That's not how genetics works. This ain't no fusion dance from Dragon Ball. For example, the offspring of a male tiger and female lion will produce a tigon, which is a lot smaller than both tigers and lions.
