Rōnin (浪人) talks over “How -Tu” Drive a Gun (Multiple Threat Engagement -Combat Pistol)

  • As a former Green Beret, I had to be proficient in the application of a combat handgun while deployed operationally throughout the world. Here, I talk over an important combat handgun fundamental “Driving the Gun”. I have seen and employed many different applications to enhance my speed and accuracy while driving the gun. In this video, I talk over how I have taken different styles of “Driving the Gun” and developed a form that has worked for me. In my teachings, the proper employment of this form must be developed along with hand and eye processing speed. Understand how I have taken forms and teachings from martial arts and athletic sports to enhance my balance, power, footwork and reactive speeds.
    Tu Lam (Retired U.S. Army Special Forces- Green Beret)--23 Years Full Spectrum Warfare, U.S. Army Special Operations worked throughout 27 countries worldwide. Team-Leader assignments in Unconventional Warfare, Foreign Internal Defense, Special Reconnaissance, Hostage Rescue, Direct Action and Counter-Terrorism Operations in permissive and non-permissive environments. I don't know if you're playing on the way he says this along with his strong following of Musashi Miyamoto but in the Book of Five Rings and Sun Tzu's Art of War, philosophies and statements in both books are solidified with ending statements like "Know this well" or "understand this" and they are stated repeatedly. I don't know if Tu meant to do that in that meaning or not, but I think that's awesome through and through.

    When he said high on the chest, center line. I figured yeah, okay makes sense. Then when he said why, the reality kind of sunk in. Trying to sever a persons spinal cord. You have to do what you have to do, when that person is trying to kill you. I like that he explains the why of everything, it makes it all real and more than just steps to remember.

    • @ryans.6889
      @ryans.6889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A lot of the guys teaching nowadays are a lot better than instructors just 5 years ago, specifically for that reason. They explain the why. A lot of instructors who are instructors either in the military or LE, they don't really explain the why. We were told to do it because it was the best tactic at that time.

    As a martial artist myself, i love how you incorporate the body mechanics and principles into shooting. It was intereseting how the trainies were 'muscling' through the drills. It reminded me of grappling with a new student. They try to force the technique instead of relaxing and flowing with it. That only comes with experience and repetition until it becomes muscle memory.
    I have always been fascinated, as a student, as to why we move our body the way we do with a certain technique. I was pretty much the only student to raise my hand and ask why. After years of doing this, i found i had an encyclopedia of knowledge from my past instructors to then share with the new students coming to class. The 'how' to do something always came quickly, but i was always more into the 'why' we did it that way.
    Keep up the great work.

    These are some of the only actually useful training and informative videos on TH-cam that I've seen. Tu Lam deserves more subscribers. You wont learn anything watching videos about Gucci gear and guns you wont fire. Get training and shoot your guns. Understand this.

    Toward the end of the video when he’s demonstrating moving from first target to second fast using your hips and the one guy is having a tougher time with it, I thought of a baseball swing mechanics because they are very similar in this situation.
    Ted Williams used to say let the hips lead the hands. Once the hands go first, you lose the ground force which creates torque and makes it easier to stay balanced, so you can’t move the bat as fast and controlled. The bat is much harder to keep on line and will dip if the hands go first. Reason is your hips can pull the bat/hands through with way more power and when the hips lead, you get your entire body from ground up working together. When the hands go first your left with just your arms and shoulders trying to do the work. Clearly much weaker without hips so losing control of the bat is much easier to do. That’s not ideal for hitting or shooting since a very small dip in the path your bat is pulled will potentially change the location of the where the bat ends up and will defiantly hurt the speed it ends up there. I’d say the same is true for shooting when going multiple targets fast like shown in the video.
    I think the thought “hands always follow
    my hips” when doing these drills could help anyone who is having a harder time with it.

    This has changed some things in my multi-target engagement. What occurred to me at the 15-oh mark is the "shooter" has already picked up the battlefield and can drive the gun to the peripheral vision because he's already seen it. I'm intrigued about leveraging the technique to the "unknown" target. Thank you! Great information and encouragement!

    The obvious difference between military and police training is the absence of ego. Some of the cops here have too much ego to really get what he's saying. Be open to new techniques and realize you're not a bad ass because you're SWAT. You're a bad ass because of high level training from HIGHLY qualified instructors who have used the same techniques against trained soldiers (not street thugs and gang members) and made it back home because they work! GREAT instruction! Thank u for posting.

      shieldman, Tu Is eclectic, pulling from different styles while adopting what makes most sense for the particular scenario. Though he has chosen a method to stabilize a pistol apart from the Weaver push-pull grip, Weaver will still get you there. Tu adopts aspects of Isosceles in order to maximize hip mobility for rapid engagement of multiple targets,...very effective, yet he also adopts a hybrid of the Weaver’s bladed stance because a shallow bladed provides better stability for managing recoil. Tu Lam clearly has incorporated proven fundamentals from the martial arts & athletics. He is not only quite smart, but very practice when he insightfully adapts and improves upon established methods, taking the best and leaving the rest.

    All of this is possible with his discipline and understanding of being present. Every person in the military or law enforcement should be trained in the basics and fundamentals that most martial arts have.
