Again : Thavius the Genius!! I know that U only use the native Ableton tools but U know we always got to make non-heard music and DAW, talking about Ableton, is always and endless bag of musical tool, but Ur reviews always bring a clear ans fresh point of view!! Keep on inspire us and thx a lot!
Clear, comprehensive, concise. By far, the best tutorial regarding warping. Thanks Thavius! Shouts from LA - I remember seeing you at Amoeba, and up in Arons!
Ive been wanting to remix tracks in ableton but as a beginner all other tutorials have left me confused. This was perfect and exactly what I was looking for!
Question: When you were transposing the slices in the SAMPLER does it also effect its tempo (even though having set to "1 Voice/s" makes it appear to be in sync)?
Great video. How do I use samples as notes without changing the length of the notes when the pitch is changed? Please please pleaseeee make a video about this! Would be eternally greatful
Great tutorial!! There is just one thing you should have add. You loose warp information when slicing. You will need to consolidate your clip before this, instead all your previous warp work is useless.
Thanks so much for your videos. They really open my eyes to what's possible. A couple of quick questions, when editing a clip of say a movie where it doesn't have a tempo, is it better to edit it in session view or arrangement? Also, to find the exact spots, do you loop it adjusting the markers till you get it just right. Thanks so much
@audioCzar - tap tempo will work with stuff like house and hip-hop (music that was made to a specific tempo and quantized), but that method doesn't work with everything, especially live music. Plus if we just told people to tap the tempo to get their audio on beat, then we wouldn't really be explaining how to warp, we would just be giving them a limited shortcut. This method will only take a few seconds as well once you know what you are doing...
Hi there, just found your video. Really good and informative, especially for a newcomer whose used to Logic. I wondering, do you know a way of isolating a specific part of a sample, say a voice with something happening in the background of the recording but all I want is the voice by itself (if that makes any sense)?
dont you need to freeze the track and chop in again in order to have the samples time stretched and warped without being out of tempo ? Because every time i warp something and chop it, the changes that were made are unexistent in the sampler
crop the loop then go to arrangement view and drag it into a folder(make a new folder for your loops in the files menu located on the left side of the screen where all the instruments/plugins/files are)
ok this is very informative! I currently have ableton 10 and I want to put different pitches to the samples to give it more variety so everything isn't just the same sound. How would I go about doing that?
Best explanation and instruction video in warping and slicing for ableton. Thanks dude I finally understand it. Didn't like the track you picked though. Sorry dude it was just all over the place. But your toot was on the 1.
When I go to "Slice to New MIDI track" the only other presets that come up for me are Sampler options with effect racks. Any help as to how I get "Slice to single Sampler"
@4generalupload That's how music progresses between revolutions; copy, modify, create, evolve. Taking inspiration from anywhere and transposing it in a new setting is at the core of creative electronic music making. That doesn't mean that you can just play keyboard over someone's track and call it your own... but appropriation is fundamental to modern culture.
When I hit warp, my "Seg. BPM" on the bottom switches to match my overall Set Tempo. Why does mine do this and the one in the video does not? Is this a difference in settings?
@4generalupload "Comment removed" I want to read it. It must have been good because your rebuttal was fantastic. I haven't copy written anything cause I don't see why you need to pay 80 bux for the out-dated service like that. What do you think of song writing affiliations like ASCAP or BMI?
Hey I have Ableton APC20 Edition, and the "Slice to New MIDI Track" option isn't available. Is it only included with the full Ableton software? How could I get around this?
Hi - you have done a very great vid! But i dont get it: Timestretch is here since Cubase SX 3 (year 2004). Fruity loops can slice beats too. Reaper can realtime timestretch and create slices from a Sample like you want. But in Ableton live this is one of the "key feature"... in 2011.. (compared to cubase sx3 in 2004) ?
Just to make it clear, Ableton features audio warp since version 1 who was released in 2001, It's true that acid introduced very similar technology in 1998. I think Live really perfected the feature an make it usable for live performance in the following years
Its not working for me :( (live 9) When i Slice to New MIDI track, the new tracks dont preserve the new pitch and duration i gave to the sample. They just play slices of the original one. wat do?
@tsevanof I can go to "slice to warp marker but I dont have the option to select "slice to simpler sampler" in the preset menu...what version of ableton live are you using?
Hi, I am doing a remix of a song at a tempo of 115 bpm, with my remix being at 118, the vocals are at 82 bpm, I have warped them so that they are at 59 bpm (half of 118). I am using the vocal in Melodyne where I have edited the vocal, but now when I export it back into the track it's tempo is at 118 which sounds stupid, the melodyne tempo was also 59. What is going wrong?
The thing I don't get about this is that it seems so subjective. I mean, this sounds right or this doesn't sound right...It's confusing. It's on the beat or it's not. I don't get Live sometimes. I mean, of course I could hear if it's off a bit, but, do I really need to think better that than Live to figure it out?
Can someone tell me why I can't just drag and drop my audio files into Ableton 10 Live without the program warping my premade beat or vocals. They always studder. Been sticking with FL Studio because it doesn't do this
Great tutorial just missing one VERY IMPORTANT THING! When slicing to a simpler in this method you loose all those lovely warped timings that were set. To over come this just take the warped sample into the arrangement mode and consilidate it then take it back and slice it in any method you like.
@AudioCzar Your method has many limitations. Also, not sure if you actually saw or understood the tutorial, since they use an easier method (than yours) with the warp straight from here function. The rest of the tutorial is about warping and a little look at the possibilities, not about getting the source BMP. :)
if its twice as fast then its essentially the same thing. 70bpm = 140bpm for example. they arent technically the same, but they will match. For example a kick on every beat at 70 will be a kick on every other beat at 140. While you will get "half" as many kicks, they will all still be in time.
New to Ableton and this is the best tutorial out of hundreds I've viewed. Great speed and explanation of functionality.
Again : Thavius the Genius!! I know that U only use the native Ableton tools but U know we always got to make non-heard music and DAW, talking about Ableton, is always and endless bag of musical tool, but Ur reviews always bring a clear ans fresh point of view!!

Hands down the best Ableton tutorial I've seen. Thank you!
My word this is a great instruction video and also a great advert for Ableton...rather than the DAW I currently use
Thank you thank you thank you. I watched several videos on this topic. Your solution is the only one that actually worked.
Clear, comprehensive, concise. By far, the best tutorial regarding warping. Thanks Thavius! Shouts from LA - I remember seeing you at Amoeba, and up in Arons!
Finally!!!! I tutorial that makes sense on slicing! 👏👏👏
Thanks Thavius, articulate and knowledgeable.
Helped me out so much.
Ive been wanting to remix tracks in ableton but as a beginner all other tutorials have left me confused. This was perfect and exactly what I was looking for!
Yeah, same here
best explanation on YT for warping.
been looking for a tutorial for this and so glad you made it clear and concise. big thanks, thavius!
OMG!! War The world is a getto was my very first record!!! Now you got me started!
DJ Jetfuel!!
This is very cool; love the reverse/no reverse at the end
im am just switching over to ableton live from logic pro 9 and you just make everything so much clearer for me. thank you
i was always slicing to Drum Rack, now im going to try sampler more....cheers thav
great tutorial! never tried slicing to sampler, always to drum rack. seems to have more control. will give it a try, thanks.
Great video! clear instructions and has helped me with my university composition assessment!
Great video Thavius! Like what you did with the Cisco Kid
Question: When you were transposing the slices in the SAMPLER does it also effect its tempo (even though having set to "1 Voice/s" makes it appear to be in sync)?
Thanks a lot. The first warping tutorial that is usefully.
clear and helpful. Great video, thanks!
Totally wasn't into Abelton but after watching this video by Thavius Beck and The remix with maschine by Shareef...I'm interested.....
Great video. How do I use samples as notes without changing the length of the notes when the pitch is changed? Please please pleaseeee make a video about this! Would be eternally greatful
Also 100th comment :)
Such an informative and interesting tutorial. Thank you
Dubspot is giving away such great tips I wonder how great the actual school is!
Yes !!!!! I love this approach to warping and slicing what a great vid Massive Props.... Gonna resample the hell outta some jamz right now :)
Great tutorial!!

yo I actually didn't know this
this has solved so much
Oh Brilliant! I did not know this! Thanks a lot!
What do you mean by consolidate? Thanks!
iGOR ctrl+j
can you please specify what u mean by consolidate? thanks!
excellent tutorial...must try slicing to a sampler next time i make a beat

once again Thavez saves the day!!
Amazing tutorial Thav sooo useful.

Thanks for showing this slice method. I almost did it by hand.

Jeff Mc Keon did u ever figure out how to find it?
same problem... i think it is not included in the Lite version?

Awesome tutorial mi amigo! Thank you!!! Be blessed:)
so are those transiet marker the grey lines?
great tutorial!
great video! I learnt a lot
Is there a way to save single slices under Samples for use later?
When I hit warp, my "Seg. BPM" on the bottom switches to match my overall Set Tempo. Why does mine do this and the one in the video does not? Is this a difference in settings?
great vid. helpful and clear.

@Kkidzz are those worth getting? im still in the intermediate stage of learning ableton and ive got an mpd24 at the moment

Great Tut. Thanks. I want a voice like Thavius !!
watch more and learn more your are great thanks.
I don't get the slice to single sampler option when I'm done warping. Anyone know why ?
apparently it was removed from AL7 to AL8. however if someone would be kind enough to post a drop box link to that preset, we can still use it in AL9
Michael Kalmykov thanks bro and honestly lol someone drop that Dropbox
Does anyone know how to warp, slice, re-create a new loop, then save that loop for future use on other projects?

AlfonxB Not to mention Sonic Foundry Acid had these features about 17 years ago.
exactly!!!!!!!!!

I just got the novation impluse 25 how to record without pressing it on the pc I dont get that beat single when I try to record I have abelton lite
@tsevanof I can go to "slice to warp marker but I dont have the option to select "slice to simpler sampler" in the preset menu...what version of ableton live are you using?
Great vid.
Can anyone tell me why my simpler doesn't have the transit markers AND by my warp markers don't slide the way his does? I'm running Live 7 BTW
I dont have that "slice to simpler" preset! where do you get it? i'm using live 8
excellent vid

Thavius you rule brah, thx, power tutorial!
It doesn't give me slice to new midi track option. And it's plugged in.
Mine is the same way. How Do I fix this??
Hey man, when i warp it, the warp markers are already there and I have no idea what to do with them.
It's in your preferences. You can chose for Ableton to warp a sample when you drop it in or not.
Can you transpose just a single not or only the whole clip
The thing I don't get about this is that it seems so subjective. I mean, this sounds right or this doesn't sound right...It's confusing. It's on the beat or it's not. I don't get Live sometimes. just what i was looking for...and sum, thankz!!
You r so talented. I am proud of u cuz. Great .
Thank you so much you just made my life.
In soft One, there is relatively little although I will say soft One has so fantastic features and I tNice tutorialnk it is going places (Rated No 2
Thanks a lot!!!! That was very helpful!!
Glad this was helpful for you!
how do i get the "Slice to Single Sampler" in Live 9??
This was awesome!!
Really enjoyed this tutorial :D thanks man!
Can someone tell me why I can't just drag and drop my audio files into Ableton 10 Live without the program warping my premade beat or vocals. They always studder. Been sticking with FL Studio because it doesn't do this
deactivate automatic warping in preferences
@@Venitius I did and it worked until I closed out of my program...
@mediatesilent
Thavius uses a Novation Launchpad; two when he's performing live.
what MIDI controller are you using?
After watching this a second time I realised that the song in the intro is made from the samples he creates later on in the vid!
this is gold
very useful, thank you
Amazing bro 👍
Thanks man!
thanks, really great!
Genius move!
Thanks that was very helpfull!
thank you!
much love
Thanks for tuning in!
Thank you
do a video of warping a sample that has not been recoded to a metronome
