I also love to hear Mr Bryan Hymel singing. He has a most beautiful voice. Looking forward to see how his Opera Career will enfold in coming years. Great personality, lovely person. God bless him!
I had the fortunate opportunity of hearing Mr. Hymel live @ the Kennedy center, Carmen (2015-16) season opening. If possible, his voice is even more stunning in person; strong but also smoothly textured. I could almost reach out & capture the notes in my hand, such was the consistency of Mr. Hymel's voice. I was taken aback by the quality created by his distinctive style; his pure talent generously weaving multiple musical elements together electrified the entire house. An experience I will never forget, I will treasure my good fortune and say if you have a chance- go see Bryan Hymel!!
Just beautiful. Beautifully and expertly executed. This man has been so smart with his voice. SO smart. And he is so young. We have SO much to yet hear from this exciting tenor! I look forward to his Polliones! He the heir apparent to all of this heroic tenor repertoire! Bravo Signor Hymel!
those folds are pure iron. damn. havent looked for a good recording for this aria from a real production in like 5 years. i gave up after realizing how difficult it is to make it to the end of that cabaletta without blowing out your voice. but he managed to do it quite well.
He is fabulous! I have no idea what he is saying, because I don’t speak a foreign language. However, in this case it doesn’t matter because his vocal expression and body language is all that is needed. So insanely talented! A true down to earth guy in person too! Bravo!
@davidricart1395. I agree with you it is a very good rendition of this extremely difficult aria. May I recommend you try to listen to Michael Spyres version also. I think you might be surprised to find that it is even better. He has an extraordinary voice.
Please keep and eye out for Matthew white, I heard him in Cincinnati and he has the potential to really be incredible. He has a couple videos on TH-cam posted.
This is an incredibly beautiful voice and the tops are just spectacular! He has the same mellifluous character to his voice as Mr Gedda had and the same bright, powerful top notes! I hope he has a high F for Puritani! Bravissimo!
Dave. If you have not heard this aria sang by Michael Spyres may I recommend you try it. He has the most amazing voice and fabulous technique. He is actually a baritenor so his low register is full and rich and his high notes are equally full. There are a couple of versions of him singing this aria at different times. Both are stupendous.
TODAY, April 26th, 2015 my friend, Jon Mason, introduced me to this phenomenal tenor. Yes, he's sexy as well. Mmmm This aria for a counter-coloratura tenor is like " Lucia's famous mad scene ". Stratospheric high notes. Very few tenors would attempt and pull it off with such success, Bravo Mr. Hymel I am now a official fan. Fabulous tenor voice. Strong, great agility, ringing high notes. Now, after hearing this I need to change my "depends". lol The only other tenor that pulled this off so well was Pavarotti in his heyday. Chris Merritt too.
As we approach the end of the ROH season this makes me think of the next summer and the new Giullame Tell!!! :-) in the meantime let's enjoy Bryan Hymel singing Asile héréditaire :-)
BRAVISSIMO !!, The staging and costume, well, very GERMANIC with no any imagination, only to DESTROY the composer's idea, in this case thanks God that Mr. Hymel is just fantastic.
I don't know how to categorize this amazing voice! Strong and powerful, yet bright and agile, with amazing high notes! I would say he's more of a Spinto tenor, but his range and freedom of his high notes, heavy as they are, show that he's much more than the typical Spinto! I will be watching this tenor's career, sure to be the next great star!
Brutebuscus I believe he is one of the rare true "heroic" tenors! Tailor made for the great roles of the big bel canto repertoire! This is truly exciting and beautifully sung!
Interesting analysis, why spinto? Just curious, because I generally wouldn't categorize anyone singing Rossini as spinto... But a truly confusing voice now that I think of trying to classify it!
I've heard him singing live several times including in this role. He's definitely not an heroic tenor. He's a full lyric tenor. The voice is lush and agile but definitely not huge. His tone is even more beautiful when you hear him live.
I think, he is a so-called French Dramatic (heroic) tenor. Excellent for Meyerbeer, some French operas by Italian composers (like this Guillaume Tell) etc.
Muttonchop Hal The Heroic Tenor is a voice Fach not much used or discussed today. Fallen out of general knowledge and usage as Fach name since the mid 1900s. Not to be confused with the Heldentenor of German origin. The Heroic Tenor can have similar colors and brightness of a Lyric Tenor but with much more clarion high notes and just as agile as a lyric or even a leggero tenor. The Heroic Tenor needs to be comfortable with high c’s, C#, and even the High D. Generally found in the roles of Rossini, but surprisingly many Verdi roles were written with the Heroic tenor in mind.
I saw him here in New Orleans earlier this season as Don Jose. The voice is pretty spectacular live. It's big, with a lot of cut and ping. He's a gutsy singer, and what I hear is formidable technique. I don't know where the "throaty" comments are getting that...it's not throaty at all, and I think he'll prove the naysayers wrong.
Bravo Bryan. I certainly don't understand the 'throaty' comments applied to this singer. There are other tenors around today that do have a throaty, guttural, sound but Bryan Hymel is not one of them. He has a very solid technique by the sounds of things. Marvelous!
yes he seems to mention her in multiple videos. I didn't find her exceptional. I'd choose Lina Bruna Rasa, Rosanna Carteri, Caterina Manini, Magda Olivero and Gina Cinga any day over Kasondra whomever. Maybe he's her rep?
Not throaty, it's called giving the sound space. Throaty sound doesn't come out like that. It would be strangled and you would have a hard time hearing him. You have to be a lyric, lyric-spinto and spend over a decade working on your voice to really understand. He also has a rare flexibility that allows him to sing both lighter and heavier repertoire. That comes with technique. Theaters are huge now. Not the little 1200 seat opera houses that golden era singers used to perform at.
It's throaty as shit. And singers sing the same in the small theaters, so that obviously has nothing to do with it. Pol Plançon sang at the Met, which even in his time was larger than any theater in Europe today. And throatiness doesn't make you louder, anyway. Literally everyone agrees that singers today are quieter, not louder. Del Monaco and Corelli were a billion times louder and not even slightly throaty. Listen to Achille Braschi in the modern era too. Nothing alike. Nada.
Wow!!! Bryan Hymel is the real thing and, therefore, we can expect to see the same kind of comments expressed concerning Jonas Kaufmann --singing in the throat, etc.--well in the 50+ years of listening and seriously studying singing the sounds this young man makes are not how I would define a throaty sound unless, that is, I want to share my bitterness with the rest of the world. Do the boo birds know how DIFFICULT THIS SCENE IS!!! Mr. Hymel, in general sings very, very easily and only gives at the climaxes which, by the way, are almost stentorian.
esta bien aqui , pero no en un Manrico de il trovatore. que sea inteligente y se ajuste a lo que le corresponde en su momento. Es el pecado de tantos.......incluido Pavarotti.
Sounds very throaty to me. Sounded throaty in Robert le Diable, sounded really throaty in Les Troyens, sounded Throaty in La Boheme. All pretty throaty like Domingo, but without the volume.
sopranosd Both. Domingo constantly sounded like he was pushing. For his top, for a bigger sound, when his language was insufficient. I would say Hymel isn't as bad, but he pushes his top and definitely tries to push for a larger sound. I think together with the his general tightness, this exacerbates the problem.
Alex Thomas I know what you mean. Domingo really belted out his top notes -- I think perhaps because he started as a baritone and perhaps felt more nervous than other tenors about high notes? Didn't he develop some vocal trouble and have to rebuild his technique? Of course, I love him for so many reasons, so momentary high note issues don't dominate how amazing the rest of his voice is. I always worry about people singing rep that might be just a tad too big for them. Spells potential vocal disaster. Pavarotti developed an edge to his voice from singing roles like Calaff which, at least to me, were a bit too bellow-y for his voice. So sad to risk. that amazing lyrical, air-filled, sound. I love Bryan's voice and I hope he pulls back on the pushing, as it were. It is such a special instrument!
it seems like what they call voce ingolata. He's trying so much to have space and have a rich voice that it gets completely swalloed. This way of singing is way too demanging, when stamina lacks, one can't keep it up. This is absolutely terrible
Joao Aurelio With all due respect, neither one of you has a clue.. This is a superbly supported voice, bright, buoyant production, with the requisite chiaroscuro of bel canto technique. The production is reminiscent of Di Stefano in his youth. There's no way Mr. Hymel would have the agility he displays if he was pushing his voice. Supporting, yes, pushing, no.
Orchesterleitung ist furchtbar 😣 Ettinger kann nicht mal so dirigieren , das Orchester zusammen spielt. Nicht zu sprechen über die Begleitung im rezitativ, unterirdisch
I also love to hear Mr Bryan Hymel singing. He has a most beautiful voice. Looking forward to see how his Opera Career will enfold in coming years. Great personality, lovely person. God bless him!
One of the finest tenors on stage today, without question.

bluechazzan yes!

The finest tenor today...recalls a previous great age of opera.
Absolutely b e a u t I f u l!!!
Wonderful! Beautiful voice and interpretation. I'll be listening to more performances of this excellent tenor.
He is an incredible great tenor, such a dificult aria !!! brillant, realy brillant!
Super!!!!
La facilidad de este hombre cantando roza la impertinencia. Alucinante!
fantastique!!!!!
This is an incredibly beautiful voice and the tops are just spectacular! He has the same mellifluous character to his voice as Mr Gedda had and the same bright, powerful top notes! I hope he has a high F for Puritani! Bravissimo!
This is right up there with Gedda's version of this. Both are absolutely incredible.
A great tenor... Bravissimo
One of the best "GUIL-laume"s on the 1st high C

In my opinion, Bryon Hymel is a singer of rare beauty. I suspect we are going to hear a lot more of this man in the future.
Gay McLoughlin. I hope his voice lasts,he’s singing a very wide repertoir.
As we approach the end of the ROH season this makes me think of the next summer and the new Giullame Tell!!! :-) in the meantime let's enjoy Bryan Hymel singing Asile héréditaire :-)
I like this one.

powerful sound.. amazing
I love this man's voice -- strong and sweet and high notes that just pour fourth easily. Yummy!
Quel voix, quel timbre, quel style, quel ténor !
Voix est un substantif féminin.
Bravo!

BRAVO CHOR 👍
The ridiculous staging and costuming is fortunately covered by Mr Hymel's spectacular singing.
I disagree, I find the horrible production to be a constant distraction...impossible to concentrate on the music...
PRECIOSO
His voice and interpretation is wonderful! It's simply amazing.
Bravo Bryan. I certainly don't understand the 'throaty' comments applied to this singer.

He has a very solid technique by the sounds of things. Marvelous!
He is definitely ‘ingolata’ compared to a tenor like George’s Thill.
Listen to literally anyone from before 1945 and tell me this isn't absurdly throaty.
He's the best tenor singing right now I think.

A lovely rounded sound him and santiago ballerini are the best of the new tenors in my opinion

Stunning voice and great singing, but why is his face scarred like that? Did Gesler do that to him? And why is he being joined by the NRA?

No different comments-no comparison Hymel IS a tenor and is singing what he should Kaufmann has other issues
finalmente un tenore vero !
BRAVO !
ps.
gli acuti si cantano usando la posizione,e non la voce...
sacrosanto!
Ma sei pazzo?? Questo tenore ingolato è un tenore vero per te??
A very clean voice who said it was throaty some idiot with an ear complaint lovely timbre
His voice is neither tight, nor throaty, nor pushed.
Maintenant, je puis mourir.

Not throaty, bur rather, anchored, rich, open!
Silfredo Serrano He sounds glorious in a big house.
He turns the voice over so beautifully. The top is so free, strong and yet supple and sweet.
