    Fearless is the ultimate forgotten Floyd song, complete with LFC’s Anfield crowd singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the end. Great list Pete

    Cheers Pete! 1-Summer 68 (Atom Heart Mother). Just a gem of a tune from Rick Wright. 2-Corporal Clegg (A Saucerful of Secrets). 3-Free Four (Obscured by Clouds)-A great tune from Waters with two killer guitar solos by Gilmour. 4-When the Tiger Broke Free (The Wall Soundtrack and re-issue Final Cut)-A powerful tune from Waters that captures all his Father's War experiences in one great song. 5) The Hero's Return. "Jesus Jesus what's it all about..." Great start with Gilmour's soaring guitar (The Final Cut).

    Probably my favorite deep cut of all time, not just from PF, is "Childhood's End" from the Obscured By Clouds album. Pete's assessment of this song is spot on. Interestingly enough it was the last song that Roger Waters didn't have a writing credit on (while he was in the band). Great video, Pete, and great picks. Thanks.

    Interesting Pete when you mention heavy, as I recall given Floyd’s notoriety for lush atmosphere raising an eyebrow when years ago VH1 included Floyd in 100 greatest hard rock bands - BUT they do have at least a couple of heavy and/or rocking songs on each album:
    Piper - Interstellar Overdrive, Lucifer Sam
    Saucer - Let There Me More Light, Corporal Clegg
    More - Ibiza Bar, Nile Song
    Ummagumma - Astronomy Domine, Careful With That Axe Eugene
    Atom Heart Mother - Breast Milky, Funky Dung sections
    Meddle - One Of These Days, Echoes (Pt 2)
    Obscured By Clouds - The Gold It’s In The..., Free Four
    Dark Side - Money, On The Run
    Wish You Were Here - Have A Cigar, Welcome To The Machine
    Animals - Pigs (3 Different Ones), Sheep
    The Wall - In The Flesh?, Young Lust
    Final Cut - Hero’s Return, Not Now John
    Momentary Lapse - Dogs of War, Learning To Fly
    Division Bell - What Do You Want From Me, Take It Back (I suppose. Although I should note I am one of those who feels that Gilmour and Waters suffer considerably without each other).

I personally recall both Animals and The Wall falling on our world culture like a thunderous cascade, like Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, like Niagra. They were that big. Still, to the point, it's those deep cuts that endure, because Pink Floyd really was that great:
    1. Fearless

    Corporal Clegg
    Green is the Colour
    Fat Old Sun
    A Pillow of Winds
    Obscured by Clouds
    When You're In
    One Slip (A Momentary Lapse of Reason is kind of a maligned album so I wanted to include one of its songs. I thoroughly enjoy this song and the album, as a whole.)
    Some curve balls:
    Echoes
    A Saucerful of Secrets
    Careful With that Axe, Eugene
    (With all three of these, bypass the studio versions and listen to the cuts from Live at Pompeii. They are the definitive versions of those songs.)
    Same holds true for the live version of Astronomy Domine from the LP Ummagumma. It includes an awesome Gilmour solo! IMO, its way better than the studio version.

    Great idea going for Obscured By Clouds stuff. It's a really good album in a kind of alternate reality where they are still really operating as a band. I wouldn't give up Waters ruling to roost Dark Side onward obviously, but it's still great that this exists and shows that it would have been possible and also really, really good.

    So 275 comments and no one (ok, one guy) is mentioning the entire album side epic that is Echos?!?
    Ok, the meandering keyboard effects in the middle could be cut but the remaining 19 minutes is pure jamming gold.

    • @mutant_blues
      @mutant_blues 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't consider it very deep. It's a main part of their popular documentary film "Live at Pompeii" also an edit version appears on "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd". But it's a masterwork!!!

    • @bryanjacobsen5005
      @bryanjacobsen5005 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mutant_blues True to a point, but if you review the comments some people are listing songs off of very popular albums that got radio airplay. Meddle still receives no airplay and Echos was never played on a commercial radio station. So I guess it is a matter of degrees?

    • @mutant_blues
      @mutant_blues 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bryanjacobsen5005 Somehow I guess! The criteria are many. I would say that Echoes is a semi deep cut. Not a single release, abandoned from many of their concerts, but gained publicity with Pompeii.

    • @grimtraveller7923
      @grimtraveller7923 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love "Echoes" ~ it is, for me, the point at which the early Floyd had been aiming at since their inception. I love every moment of its 23+ minutes, sounds, music, words, singing, solos, jamming and all. They were never interesting to me once they'd found and pursued a direction with DSOTM and beyond. "Echoes" {originally called something like "Return to the sun of nothing" which is a great title} is their apogee.
      But it's not a deep album cut. It's been popular for nearly 50 years, it's played in it's entirety in 2 movies {one is a Floyd film from Pompeii, the other is a movie about surfing that I remember seeing back in the early 80s}, it's on numerous bootlegs and radio broadcasts and all four members of the "Meddle" band cite it as the huge pointer towards DSOTM.

    • @bryanjacobsen5005
      @bryanjacobsen5005 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grimtraveller7923 I would propose that it is a matter of definition. Most people posting here have an extensive knowledge of Pink Flord's discography so a deep track to the general public wouldn't be a deep track to us participating here.
      Pete stated he would avoid the biggest albums, popular videos, etc so there are some guidlines. Based on this, I would propose that it could be debated if the following songs, all mentioned multiple times in this thread, are not deep tracks:
      *Anything from off of The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Some tracks from these listed in this thread are The Great Gig in the Sky, Have a Cigar, Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts 6-9), Mother, Young Lust, Goodbye Blue Skies, The Thin Ice, Waiting for the Worms, Nobodies Home.
      A similar discussion could be made for Animals (of which every track, Pigs on the Wing, Sheep, Dogs, Pigs (3 Different Ones) are listed at least once in this comment thread), The Final Cut (Not Now John, The Final Cut, Parnoid Eyes), A Momentary Lapse of Reason (One Slip, Dogs of War, On the Turning Away), and The Division Bell. All of these albums sold significantly more than Meddle and had many tracks that received more airplay.
      Early legacy stuff-
      *Bike and See Emily Play are typically used as examples of Barrett's early stripped down psychedelia. I used to hear it fairly often on late night radio.
      *Careful With That Axe Eugene, Intersteller Overdrive, and One of These Days- all 3 have gotten semi-extensive airplay but, more significantly, have remained live setlist staples. Similar but to a lesser extent can be said for Astronomy Domine which, like Echos, disappeared from live set lists only to reappear on later dates.
      So if any of these songs I have listed are what you consider "deep cuts" then I would propose that Echos is at the very least debatable for deep cut status.
      One more disclaimer would be that the radio stations (there were at least two) in my local area (Seattle) would play a lot of this stuff back in the day, particularly from late evening on. So I was possibly exposed to tracks that other areas didn't get very much of? (these stations generally suck now as they have reduced their playlists to a couple hundred songs. Gee, I wonder why radio is dying?!?).
      Anyways, I just enjoy discussing Pink Floyd so even if no one agrees with me I still have had fun with the topic!

    - Jugband Blues: A really haunting way for Syd to go out. The lyrics get me every time.
    - Cymbaline: Just a beautiful little Waters tune. Probably my favorite off More.
    - The Narrow Way (Pt. 3 specifically): Wow, I love this piece, yet it's never mentioned anywhere. A nice break from the cacophony of the second disc of Ummagumma. The first great Gilmour composition.
    - Careful With That Axe, Eugene: The live version from Ummagumma is...well...listen for yourself. It's amazing. That version could easily make it into my top 10 Floyd songs on most days.
    - Wot's...Uh the Deal: Basically every song on Obscured by Clouds could go on this list but I like this one in particular, although your choice of Childhood's End was also excellent.
    Oh, and since Floyd is my favorite band I feel obligated to give a completely unwelcome top 5 while I'm here.
