    Inside Sierra Leone's notoriously corrupt justice system there's been an explosion in female prison rates. But there are some who are fighting for these women, trapped in poverty and discrimination, and behind bars.
    Twelve years after Sierra Leone’s long civil war came to an end, its broken institutions and weak development indicators continue to impact on the lives of its people. And as ever it’s women who bear the brunt. Aside from the usual grim data, one statistic stands out: the number of female prisoners has doubled over the past three years. Paralegals Victoria and Marvel are fighting for the rights of women trapped by a corrupt system that discriminates against them. In a country of only 400 lawyers, Sierra Leone’s 80 paralegals have a crucial role to play in trying to deliver basic human rights. As we watch Victoria and Marvel at work, negotiating with police and prison authorities, advising and at times cajoling the women they have come to help, it becomes clear how daunting that task is.

      Christians and Muslims tend to have a close relationship in west african countries such as Sierra Leone. Despite muslims being a strong majority, most of their presidents have been from the Christianity minority, although apparently thats never really been an issue. This is still the case in many African countries which only ever get mentioned in Western media when Boko Haram attack it, which leads people to assume the actual populace is religiously divided.

    My heart goes out to them struggling with poverty, and while I think that she's right in fighting for people whose only crime was stealing food to survive, they should be forgiving. I do think that this is quite a dishonest documentary, to claim that this is sexism or somehow an injustice against women.

    • @machruk
      @machruk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +matthew steenburg I agreed with everything that you said until you mentioned that this isn't sexism or an injustice against women. As mentioned in the video, women's incarceration rates are soaring and also women are subjected to being locked up for illegal reasons (loitering because prostitution is legal for example) and of course it's women who are being abused sexually by the so-called police (remember the woman who mentioned that she knew women who were taken behind the station and made to have sex with the "police" w/out a condom). This is enough for me to show injustice for women in this doc. BTW, in any extremely poor country such as SL, women will always have it worse than the men. This is a fact- sure everyone's poor, but women in these countries are subjected to domestic violence, sexual assault and too many other things to list here. In closing, Afghanistan for example, has a rate of approximately 90% of women/girls living there being victims of some type (or several types) of abuse in their own families.

    To any one in this comments section accusing this video of being, and I quote, "Feminist bull sh*t", feminism and sexism are not the same in this context. True feminism is: 1. Equal rights (achieved or somewhat achieved in most countries) 2. Social Equality, not being seen as inferior to men in a social setting or in society in general.
    Sexism is usually related to abuse, violation of rights, and miscarriage of justice due to your gender.

    I'm always amazed to see living conditions in the 3rd world. It seems like wherever they attempt to emulate the developed world, that they are made worse off. Sierra Leone has semi and precocious gemstones and gold, and I'm sure a number of other commodities that should increase the overall standard of living, yet it doesn't. Compare that with the way the Masi live, or Brazil's native Indian tribes still living traditional lifestyles, and you can see that those people are happier.

      The female prison system in Australia is a national disgrace. The majority are incarcerated for "lying to Police"... imagine if they started locking up men for the same offence?. www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-20/womens-prisons-full-of-domestic-violence-victims/10599232

    The sexism in this documentary is the notion that women who commit crime are somehow more driven by circumstances than men who commit crime. Well what should I expect with a woman narrating.

    I once worked with a male RN at the Tehachapi State Prison, I WAS ON A 6 MONTH CONTRACT. I found him to be a Jolly fellow,. He told everybody how he couldn't wait to go on vacation to Asia, where he straight out said"i can buy little boys of any age"...I was so disgusted. Not by him so much as I was with everyone else who knew that this his perpetual habit!??? So wrong in EVERYWAY!!!!

    We are living in a corrupt world which will only become more corrupt.Proverbs 14,34.Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.Romans 10,4.For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result,all who believe in him are made right with God.
