Thank you very much! I just started learning violin and I've gotten my first violin today, but I was going crazy because I thought it was damaged! Until I came across this video, it was really helpful, I couldn't see any other person explaining this, thank you.

I hated it when my orchestra teacher took my new rosin and scratched it. Drove me crazy.

I was so confused, because I got my new viola for orchestra today, and I was like ‘what???’ Because the rosin looked like marble, but now I know how to work it:)

DONT RUFF IT UP. Instead, use the rosin regularly until it looks slightly different

Wish I'd seen this before I exposed my rosin block to alcohol vapours. Now I have to wait for it to harden again!

Oh so that’s how it’s down,A while back a person told me to scratch the rosin but somehow i ended up with a scratch instrument

I used to do this regularly, but then heard that scratching new rosin exacerbates its tendency to crack and break. I used to think the amount of cracked, broken rosin in my classrooms was due to poor quality rosin and just Middle School...but I stopped my "rough-it-up" practice and just went with "keep on scrubbing!" It seems that I've had slightly less broken rosin, but that's just my observation over less than a year of changed behavior. Do you have a more scientific answer as to whether this practice might lessen the longevity of the rosin cake or not?

Working with materials similar to rosin for other things I do, my best guess would be that those extra scratches which will be deeper than the hair will create, which basically make spaces for air to cause it to dry out but the spits drying out are deeper in the material eventually causing cracking. That's just a guess anyway 🤔

Interesting. I have heard, you should absolutely not rough up the rosin in any way, as this can create jagged edges, which can snag the bow hairs.
I have been instructed to make as many passes over the bow, as needed the first time, to apply adequate rosin, and that subsequent times, would be easier.
    Address? Thanks! ☺

My new cello came with black rosin. Will the hairs still turn white?

What did you use to ruff up the rosin?

Dr James is wrong! Do not "ruff up" your rosin. All caked rosin, new or used should be smooth. Just because he has a "dr" in front of his does not mean he is correct!
